pulled in at the Niagara border

I'm surprised they were not waiting for you to come out with the receipt then ask you to pop the trunk before you left. That way if you had any additional non-declared goods they could make your day very unpleasant.

In all the times we have crossed I have only once had a request to inspect the trunk after showing the receipt for the duties paid. Always best to be completely honest and pay all duties that you owe.

They didnt, if they did, i would have popped the trunk.

I was asked to pull in for a specific purpose, that purpose was to pay taxes on my declared goods. If after paying they wanted to search some more they could have asked...but i will not volunteer my car to be searched.

A friend and I went on a road trip in August in his car, just an overnight getaway to kill time. We drove to Jersy to see the Badabing strip joint (sopranos) and then into Manhatten for dinner. We were 'harassed' entering the U.S. My friend is the type that just sounds nervous when speaking to authority. The dude actually made him hold his hand up to see if it was steady! Searched the trunk then let us go. Coming back was worse, we were late leaving Manhattan and planned to find a more reasonably priced hotel in a smaller town outside of NY, but as luck had it, with all the summer festivals and concerts there wasn' a room available between NY and Buffalo. By 4:00 AM it wasnt worth looking so we just took turns driving. The border agents refused to believe we drove nonstop into the US and back and had nothing to declare. Car was searched, then the guy started asking questions. I asked him if he watched a sopranos and then told him we went to go see the Badabing for kicks...he did watch the show, laughed and let us through!

Overall I always have a good experience with border guards. Last night I came back with $170 and they told me to go right through. No taxes even if I was in the US for 5 hours. This happened before quite a few times at rainbow bridge. Being straight up with them gets you far.

This past Saturday we went to the Outlet Mall in Niagara Falls NY, just for the day. Crossing into the States took about an hour at Queenston, but the return trip to Canada at the same bridge was mere minutes. We spent about $200 in total, including 2 18-packs of beer. I declared everything and was prepared to pay all duties owed. To my surprise the Canadian Border guard handed back our passports and said have a nice day. I said thanks a lot and we got out of there before he changed his mind.

We go about once a month and generally have no issues. usually we do a partial declare. So we spend like $600 just say, usually I show them receipts and say about $300 and they guards are cool. I think as long as you declare something you are ok most times.

Here's a quick FYI.

To those who want to stay 24 hours and claim the $400 exemption.

So you'd think that if you went over the $400 dollars that you would get taxed on the remainder right? WRONG!

If you go over, by even a dollar, the exemption is removed and you pay tax on the full pop.

Yea, learned that the hard way...

Weird, does this apply to the $800 limit too? Have you found this written anywhere, or was that the rule of the day for a pissy agent?

+1 on the $400 rule. Not sure about the $800.

I still cant get over the fact that they charge duty on shipping. ********.

The canadian border agents have more power than you can imagine. This spring I brought a motorcycle from the US and they even took my iphone and asked me for the passcode to search through my emails and documents on the phone, looking to prove that I've been lying to them about the price of the bike. There was nothing I could do about it and it's all perfectly legal. Things are gonna get worse!

Was the price really low that it was questinable?
One thing I was told in the past that don't even try to lie about the price whenever bringing car/bike over from the states. So whenever I did bring the bike over I told them how much I paid for it ($6000). Gave them craigslist print outs and everything. Went smooth.

If they get suspicious I believe they have ways of checking cc purchases etc. Be careful. I claim everything because I only get pulled over say 1 in 3 trips.

Disaster waiting to happen. I considered doing this ONCE on my last trip to the us do shopping with the gf. I was going to wear the watch I bought back. Chickened out last minute and said f it, not worth $130 in tax.

Had all our receipts ready, we weren't hiding anything. Got pulled to secondary. They promptly asked me to step aside an proceeded to empty every article of clothing etc out of the car an cross reference it. Even found a mcdonalds receipt and questioned me about it.

FYI. Not worth the trouble. Especially if you travel for work. Imagine the embarrassment when traveling with co workers.

A co worker just came back from Buffalo, and got secondary search by a grumpy ****.
Was it a guy that looked like Zach Galifianakis? I cross at Peace Bridge 4-5 times a year for the past 6 years and have only been sent over to secondary search 3 times. Two of those times, I was sent to secondary by a sour faced, grumpy guard who looked like Galifianakis.

I declare exactly what I spend and haven't had any issues resulting from the secondary search. But the look that guy gave me as soon as I pulled up was a give away that he was going to give me a hard time.

Sorry. The **** gets in the way of describing this person. More like "Grunt" but take away the Gr and replace it with a C.

Its Niagara and mostly Queenston. Thousands of cars a day shopping and trying to work the system. I can only imagine the BS stories these guys get to listen to all day long, people multi layering clothes in august, jewelry, claiming "I always have a 50in tv in my minivan, it was there when I crossed in".

Not condoning rude behaviour but it would be hard.
