Proposal to Ban Serving Food to Obese People

^Dude, just read the stats on even one of the points I made. Take Prednisone for example. Aside from how it triggers acne, causes osteoporosis and turns yours internal organs to mush, it also permanently slows your metabolism. It's so widely prescribed in Canada that it's shocking. For everything from asthma, MS, Cushings Syndrome, lupus, arthritis, crohn's disease, etc., etc. It's no wonder there are so many people fighting with their weight. And on a drug like Prednisone, it's a losing battle for many. I refused it myself for my MS when the doctor was trying to push me to take it. I'll pass on the side effects.

Great post Stormcat, just wanted to reply to each point you made.

Obesity is linked to income and socioeconomic status. Food that's bad for you is much cheaper than food that is actually good for you. If you're poor, you're probably going to eat food that you can afford (i.e., prefab foods, frozen meals, fast foods filled with preservatives, fat and salt to make it all tasty, subpar cuts of meat, etc). No?

Exactly. I believe it's called a food desert. That's where the grocery stores in a neighbourhood don't/won't carry healthy items because it's too expensive for the local population. The other issue is that the poor people in the neighbourhood don't have the means (or the willpower) to travel further to get healthy food. Let's tax the fat and subsidize the healthy. Win/win.

Obesity in some cases has a real physiological cause.

There's not a lot you can do when on steroids, but that is another issue. However, if you're that unhealthy (for whatever reason) that you are obese, you really can't justify eating fast food. Eat healthy and perhaps you may actually get healthier and not need the drugs.

We differ physically and in terms of metabolism.

I have a coworker that will eat an entire bag of Oreo's during his shift and he's almost gross skinny. If I was to eat a bag of Oreo's, I would probably gain 5lbs overnight. We're not talking about overweight, or fat people, we're talking about obese people. If you need a knee surgery because you are 400lbs, you can not say that it's because you're metabolism is slow.

Obesity for a lot of people has a real psychological cause.

I am fighting to lose weight right now. I am 5'9" and weigh 212lbs. I got up to 230 and didn't fit into my pants anymore. I started eating smaller portions and playing the Wii Fit, also lifting weights. It's not much, but while I'm not losing weight on a scale, I am starting to look better. My wife is 5'6" or so and got up to almost 200lbs. She got gall stones and completely cut out fat from her diet for the 6 months or so it took to get into surgery. She's down to about 140 and is looking great. Oh yeah, and she has a hyper or under active (whichever one makes you gain weight) that she is on medication for.

That's pure idiocy.. What if an obese person is there on a business trip? Let them starve to death? We already have too much nannyism.. We don't need to add more.

Skinny people are like Slinkies... they have no real purpose, but they sure bring a smile to your face when you push one down a flight of stairs.

I can tell from this post that you could feed many of us.

PS: Glad I stirred this pot back up lol

Everything in moderation. Healthy food generally tastes **** anyway.

Out of curiosity, what do you consider to be "healthy" foods?

Cauliflower and papayas, spinach fetuccine.

Actually....it's not that healthy foods all taste ******...it's that in comparison to things like poutine...they do.

Would you rather have a tofu milkshake with spirulina and wheatgrass or...fois gras on crusty french bread for instance?

I don't think thats possible. Remember the couple who went for a hike and the husband found his way to civilization and the wife did not? The wife end up losing 40lbs or something to that effect. I doubt he had much to eat

The "unhealthy" foods taste better because "back in the day" we needed fat, salt and the like to survive. They were generally harder to come by, so our taste buds are programmed to like those kinds of foods more. Nowadays those hard to find foods are insanely available and cheap.

Never heard this story before. Any way you can put a link to it?

I don't know about that, I'd take a healthy meal over fast food crap any day.....unless bacon is involved. lol The only time I ever resort to fast food is if time is an issue and there are no healthy options around.

Neither, really. Not a fan of fois gras and have yet to sample anything tofu that is palatable. I'm not sure about using poutine as a taste benchmark, either. :) I agree it's delicious, but it is a very rare occasion that I have it.

To me, healthy foods are pretty much anything organic grown or raised and, living in Grey County, we are surrounded by all kinds of that. Like the lean trimmed steak and asparagus served with a fresh greens garden salad we had the other night - 100% organic (no pesticides, hormones or any other nasty crap) and 100% local.

Even if they don't starve to death, there are other complications... With obesity comes diabetes and if they don't get their steady intake of sugars, it can involve serious health issues. In any case, starving a person for several days is just plain cruel. You wouldn't do it to a murderer or a terrorist, why do it to a person who either made poor dietary choices or has health issues?

wow, I just had the stupidest image ever....bunch of crack heads out side of McDonalds getting payed my fat people to get them their Big Macs. lol

Some would argue that steak isn't a health food but I agree with you. And I'm being a little facetious as some of the best food I've tasted was in a vegetarian restaurant and I'm a big time meat eater. This was a while ago though in Kensington Market at King's Cafe. It's all in how the chef prepares things.
