Pickup Trucks

Went to drive the Maverick last night, and got promptly ignored by the dealer / salesman considering the secretary went to advise him of our appointment. Waited way too long, and after 35min I got tired and left.

Went to another dealership as they had a few Mavericks nearby. Drove the XLT + Luxury Package + AWD and I'll be honest...I was quite impressed with the truck considering I was expecting a much worse experience.

It was fairly quiet, peppier than I expected with the EcoBoost, and drove more like a car than a 'truck' of any kind. While I am not 100% sold on the Mav, it was a good experience but I would like to drive the Hybrid just for comparison sake. I'll see if I can find a used one available somewhere.

Spoke with 3 dealerships, and each dealership gave me different times....6 - 12 months. There's one that's coming in by Easter, but it's a weird colour, and they loaded it to reach the 50k mark...which I'm not interested in.

I don't need a truck, I don't need a truck, I don't need a truck....

I think my biggest hangup is there's no secure space within the cabin (outside of the seats) so dealing with the exposed bed will immediately need a hard tonneau cover...which aren't cheap.

But, I was definitely pleasantly surprised.

Was the weird colour 'Hot Pepper Red'? When I was looking at them I couldnt find any dealers within 100 kms that had one on the lot. I was being told that it was 1-2 year wait. I finally found a dealer that had one so I went to look. It looked like it had been there awhile and it was a hybrid. I sat a looked at it for awhile because the colour, at first, was horrible. The more I looked at it the better it got though. After about 20 mins a salesman came out. I told him immediately I would take it..NOW. His first words were 'in that colour?' YES!! We went back into the office and he looked it up. Sadly it was a customer order that had been waiting to be picked up, for a few weeks. My first thought was if I had been waiting for more than a year for my new vehicle I wouldnt leave it sitting when it came in. Then again, I drove all over the place to just see one so it was possible the buyer was from far away as well.

Anyways, ended up with the Ranger (which was almost as hard to find without waiting up to a year). Long way of saying I did kind of like the Hot Pepper Red.

EDIT I also found out that Ford dealers list customer ordered vehicles as 'in stock' on the lot as soon as they arrive. Even though someone has already paid for it, it shows online as being 'available for sale' even though it is not. I only had one salesperson that admitted that to me when I called to ask them to hold it as I was on the way to purchase it (1.5 hour drive). I am guessing that all the other companies do the same thing.

Rear seat bottom flips up, you can stuff a volleyball under there.
Ugh totally forgot to check that space. But I’m sure it won’t fit much.

Overall I was impressed and just need to decide…am I a truck guy or am I a fool for looking at this.

Went by the dealership that blew me off last night as my son wanted to see it.

Pretty sure there's a $600 charge if you want the hot red paint. Prob does look better in person.

It checks a lot of boxes. Go test drive the ridgeline, it also handles like a car and has a far better interior, more utility, yadda yadda. You’ll pay more at the pump but thems the breaks.

Jesus, what happened to trucks? That is about 25% usable as a "truck".
Oh, nice color😊

Well that’s the appeal for me with the Maverick. Both the F150 and Ranger are too big for my use.

Maverick (to me) is a normal car for 90% of my needs, and 10% usable as a ‘truck’ when / if needed.

Why bother with larger if all I need is 5-10% of the time with a ‘truck’ for suburban dad duties?

Try the Hyundai SantaCruz, 2.5T motor (think Genesis GV 70), nice interior, 4ft or thereabouts box (tonneau cover inckuded) with underfloor storage, pax seats too have underseat storage, most of the gizmos are there and it has a price of around 40K. Drives like a car.
Just for kicks, I tried one in for size the other day (met Nav Bhatia there, cool dude).

Heard that the Escape and Edge from Ford will be gone after 2025.

Box is too short to put anything useful back there. I’d like at least long enough for a bike.

Looks sharp though.

Specs as I read them say it's 4.33' whereas the Mav is 4.5' so pretty much the same. Does look smaller than that though.

Iirc there’s something funky with either the wheel wells or the front of the box that cuts room.

Specs say:
Bed length upper 1230mm
Bed length lower 1323mm
Bed length tailgate down 1900mm

That standard rollout tonneau cover takes up space at the top of the bed which is the big negative aspect of them and why they're not super popular in pickups.

That might be it.

I did look at all 3 and I completely removed the Hyundai off my list because of the bed.

Now I just have to convince myself that I want to jump into a truck as a daily over my x5.

🧐

But it’s all moot until I see how much CRA comes for this year. Thankfully it’s my lowest income year ever, so that shouldn’t launch me into a terrible tax bracket.

That's one way of looking at it.

But if that 5-10% of the time you are hauling heavy duty or large items like a motorcycle, then a 4.5' bed is basically useless. And the rest of the 90-95% of the time, you're left dragging a small bed behind you that you never use... It's like the worst of all worlds, 100% of the time.

If your usage is that low, better off getting an SUV or passenger car as your full-timer and renting a truck/trailer for the 5-10% of the time that you need the space/towing capability.

Just my opinion.

That is a good way to look at it also. Not even sure what made me focus on the Maverick.

Even something like an Escape / Qashqai would meet my needs 95% of the time.

Regardless wife said outright she doesn’t want a truck in the house so Mav is out.
