Penalty for Weaving Traffic

i think 98% of the people who responded to this thread have at some point gotten together at a local tim hortens (without purchasing any tim horten products) and boasted about how they lane split/run from cops....

dont deny it...you know its true

and for all the geniuses on this forum who have 4000000000+ years experience of riding (even before the cave man invented the wheel) maybe you should check this out

I wanted this in writing, so I wrote to Traffic Safety Programs OPP:

I hope that this can answer your questions, for information purchase a Highway Traffic Act so you can read in detail the sections and the regulations that applies.

1. Can a Motorcycle ride between two traffic lanes?
- section 130 HTA Careless Driving, without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other drivers.
- section 154(1)(a) HTA Fail to Drive in Marked Lane. a vehicle shall be driven as nearly as may be practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until the driver has first ascertained that the movement can be made with safety.

2- Is there a minimum space between vehicles?
-section 158(1) HTA Follow Too Closely, not follow more closely than is reasonable and prudent for having due regard for the speed of the vehicle and the traffic on and the conditions of the highway.
- Have you seen the painted chevrons on the 401 in Pickering? That is designed to give you a minimum 2 second following distance at the set speed limit.

3. Speed limit?
- section 128 HTA sets out the speed limits. driver training can tell you that a safe passing speed of another motor vehicle is about 20km/h and a parked vehicle is 40km/h.

4. Danger zones?
- section 148 HTA, numerous subsections discuss passing meeting vehicles and overtaking vehicles.
- unsafe areas, curves, uphill, railway crossing, bridges.

Another good source of info would be to go the MTO and get the new drivers hand book. The rules of the road are clearly outlined. Also try Young Drivers of Canada or any other driving school they might have more information

I hope this has been useful, any other questions please contact me.

Only if God catches them, and he has to fill his quote.

So who is this mystical entity you are talking about? Is he related to Santa Claus?

The fact that you are unable to correctly spell our national treasure's name correctly...vexes me.

No, silly. Santa is the one who gives us gifts, God is the one who punishes us. That's why we worship him/her/it.

Agreed.

Punishable Offence. Death by Lane Splitting.

Regarding driving in the lane w/ parked cars...

I've asked an officer at one of the motorcycle super shows and he said that it's perfectly legal and he does it himself.

Common sense also dictates that you take care when driving in that lane as you have:
- door prizes
- clueless jay walkers walking between the cars (and thus being invisible)
- angry cagers with vigilante justice who don't think you're allowed to do this

OKAY ITS TRUE I HAVE DONE.. I once bragged about running from the cops on my 600 Katana. I also said that it was following an epic jewel heist in Rome.....None of it was true ...MY LIFE IS A LIE

I used to lane split a lot and I find it to be really safe. Just go slowly and pay attention to the cars ahead.

But then one day an old guy on a Harley went berserk on me, he said I was giving motorcyclists a bad name and that he's been riding for 15 years and has never ever done it.

I told him the research shows it's safer and that laws are not always correlated with what's actually safe. We kept riding and arguing at each stop until we went our separate ways.

After that day, I lane split a lot less and I always hesitate when I do so. Many times I get stuck behind a long line of traffic and it's hard for me to get into the mood of lane splitting.

I think he ruined my riding style :( sighh.....

pretty much what most posts said.

multitude of possibilities on charges. from unsafe lane change to careless driving or even possibly Dangerous Driving (criminal charge).
so wouldn't recommend it.

The biggest consequence of doing so on the Gardiner, would be falling off.

It has happened before, it will happen again.

I have faith that you'll find out one day, and hope that it won't be too late. :D
