Penalty for Weaving Traffic

Hey,

So I was driving home in a cage on the gardiner today and I got stuck in bumper to bumper. For that entire 30 minute traffic jam, all i wanted to do was get my bike, and ride through the traffic like moses walked through that sea.

Im very new to the bike scene so I dont have any personal experience...

Question: What are the potential consequences of riding "aggressively"? I.e. lane splitting, weaving traffic, riding on the shoulder, etc to avoid traffic
lets assume I was staying under the speed limit
Am I looking at a fine? suspension? demerit points? Insurance price raise? All of the above?

haha almost got me there...very funny

You'll get charged with stunting/racing. Lose your license, get your bike impounded. Will cost ya quite a few thousand $$ by the time you are finished.

I know it's so very tempting but all it takes is one person in a car curious to see what the hold up is and you could hit it. No where to go when lane splitting.

I say try it... And report back and confirm the responses that others have posted

I adjusted the above slightly. =D

being picky aside, its because multiple offences may apply and the cop will have discretion on charging which one.

As far as I'm aware, the only place to lane spit legally (Canada and US) is California (correct me if I'm wrong). Everywhere else you can get majorly nailed.

Depends of the cop catches you.

Otherwise, what toysareforboys said

Non of above if you not get caught. If you will see/hear popo behind you, just don't stop - he cannot filter through traffic like you do. If you won't stop, there is pretty good chance that you will escape. Just don't forget to hide your licence plate (there are tonnes of methods to do so)
:lmao:
Submit a report here, please...
And remember the rule: pics or never happen!

lol ok my bad, i guess i was more so wondering about your experiences...i always thought the escape from traffic was a pretty neat feature of owning a bike. I've seen lots of ppl doing it. Does it get enforced heavily? Any good loopholes i need to know?

It is heavily enforced and if you plan to do it, be prepared for the consequences if you get caught. There is no loop hole for lane splitting.

I'd like to assume that your post is just a joke/troll... but otherwise, I really hope you are not seriously suggesting running from police. They may not be able to filter like a bike can, assuming there's not a clear shoulder etc for them to follow via, but they can certainly radio ahead to other officers who would be able to cut the rider off further ahead. Not to mention that the very idea of running from police is idiotic, as if you do get caught, any hope you'd had of avoiding charges disappeared the moment you added "attempt to evade" to the list.

That said, I personally do wish we could legally filter. Speaking more in the sense of being able to filter through non-moving traffic, at a reasonable speed, and not lane-splitting actively with moving traffic. Our roads & highways are simply not set up in such a manner to do so with any level of safety.

The only "loophole" of any use is.

you may ride in the same lane as the parked cars - look out for the door prize.
you may use the HOV lanes in Toronto (only Toronto).

you may use the HOV lanes in Toronto (only Toronto).

Clarification on this: meaning the HOV lanes on Toronto's main roads (NOT highways such as the 404) which show a motorcycle on their signs, such as on Eglinton Ave, or certain areas downtown, and only during indicated times if there is such a restriction.

It is my understanding (please do correct me if I'm wrong) that you may in fact use the HOV lane on the 404, but ONLY if you are riding with a passenger. Doing so solo or with a group of other solo riders will get you a ticket, one which I narrowly avoided unwittingly leading a group ride into during my first year riding.
