Peacefully Protest at Police Stations/Queens Park Against Bike Thefts?

Hey guys. As you all know, bikes get stolen by mother-fuggin thieves every day here in the GTA. I just read about someones MV f4 getting stolen. Such a beautiful bike. My heart died a little reading his thread. I feel the pain because my own brothers cbr1000rr got stolen. And as much as people may say insurance covers you, it is just not the same. People who have had this done to them know exactly what I am talking about.

And what has the police done about this? To be honest I am not sure. My brother and I followed up with them many times when his bike got stolen and each time they simply said in a monotonic unmotivated tone that they were still investigating it. I swear the office I was speaking to over the phone sounded as if he completely forgot about our case. I understand the police are busy but come on, this bull-crap, and has got to stop. I haven't heard of any big bike theft ring bust as of late or of anyone's bike being found and returned to them. But I can almost guarantee you if a prominent politician's bike got stolen (if they were to have one), the police would work their ***** off to find the criminals.

Now the real question is, what can we do about it? As an individual, I staked out in the condo parking lot where my brothers bike got stolen leaving my own bike as bait for a few nights hoping that the thieves would come back. Unfortunately, they didn't. It was a feeble attempt but I still tried.

However, I feel we can do something more as a community. I believe we need some serious media attention to pressure the police to step up their efforts and deter away any criminals. We need to raise our voices collectively. I suggest we stage a PEACEFUL protest outside a police station or perhaps Queens Park. I am proud to say GTA has quite a few bikers of all races and ages. We have the numbers. We need to have our voices heard. If we can manage to protest and get media coverage and aware the general public on how numerous bikes get stolen every year, we would be doing ourselves a service.

This is just an idea for now. I would highly appreciate if some of the members of the GTAM community can chime in on my thoughts.

Bait bike is the only way to get in with the action.

If anyone could pull this, and perhaps make a mess out of it too, both media and police would jump on it. Then we would see some action.

On the other hand, getting your baby bike stolen is so much personal than to react with protests/walks. That's very pathetic, IMO.

I prefer my tax dollars go toward the Police looking for missing kids instead of missing bikes.

What does a private investigation cost these days?

People make this sound as if it is 2 or 4 guys doing all of this.
It is a CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE just like car thieves. It is ORGANIZED CRIME running things now for the most part.

So you catch these 2 or 4...there will be 4 - 8 next year.
The car thieves now know that bikes are much easier to steal than cars.

Car theft is a global problem; however the rate of cars stolen in Canada is among the highest in the world. According to Statistics Canada, in 2010 about 254 cars a day were stolen in Toronto.

Like PSY says, a bait bike may help you catch a specific underling of the theft ring, its not going to lead you to stop the theft ring. For that, the police is pretty much necessary.

However, I disagree with you PSY in where you tax dollars should be spent. Of course finding kids is of utmost importance, but the authorities can do both jobs and both of them adequately. They have more than enough resources.

Which organized crime group?

Are all these thefts just happening in Toronto, or is it going on in Hamilton and up north as well?

My bros bike was stolen in Waterloo.

My friends bike was stolen in Mississauga.

So its all over the place, from what I can tell.

There won't be 4-8 next year. In fact, if it's 2-4 this year, there will be 1-2 next year. Bec things are getting ONLY easier for them, as they get more experienced and noone is doing **** to fight.

And so what if it's organized crime ? Does it mean we just sit and watch ?

Ok so go put on your Superman undies and rustle them up.

Get proper insurance coverage, secure your bike as best as you can.
Don't lose sleep over depreciating plastic and metal.
My life and safety is worth more than some cookie cutter bike.
Maybe your bike is unique.

The Cops have higher priorities than dealing with toys.
I prefer they focus on missing kids/drunk drivers/gangs/illegal guns.

People walking by will be doing this to you guys and so will the Cops as they snicker.

I suggest someone writes to The Star, nice formal letter. See what comes out of it, maybe they can get the ball rolling.

Toronto/Canada is already one of the safest places on Earth. So, police doesn't have to do 1 single thing you are listing there, simply because they don't need make repuation as the way things are here.

So, since that is out of the equation, they may as well do some revenue work - hence, half of a station get out on the street writing speeding tickets.

For me, it is not about what my bike is worth to me or to you or to the market. I couldn't care less about that. It's about losing a thing that is a toy, my toy. The idea that some dude decides it's ok to steal my toy - that's VERY disturbing.

If police is too busy eating donuts and watching a stop sign for hours to write a few tickets, that just gives the right excuse to do something on our own. And I'm not talking about hollywood movies here - a bait bike could be set with someone to watch, and you could lock the ***** inside the condo garage until the cops show up. Simple, and most important, it doesn't require those undies, but hey, I'd wear them for you anyways

I'm sure you would chage your tune if your bike was stolen. Theft affects everyone when we renew our
Insurance each year. Like the OP after my bike was stolen I sat in my garage many nights with a shotgun waiting for the bastards to come back. stupid? Maybe crazy? Sure illegal of course. I'm still
****** after 3 years.

The police are never going to do anything about it.

Vigilante justice is likely the only thing that will work. Not legal, and if you confront someone while holding a baseball bat you better be prepared for what comes next.

Of course we have those that tie up those resources when they advocate fighting every ticket. Bill 172 and its acceptance by the general public would indicate that most people would be laughing at the maniac speeders who have been brought wimpering to their knees at a protest to get their hot rod toys back.

In the real police world of budgets and such the police generate revenue by writing tickets. They spend revenue by investigating crime.

In the growth market of policing for profit the motto is "Crime costs. Write tickets instead."

PS Bait and beat vigilantism will have you supporting the crippled thief for life after they sue you with the assistance of the police. Not a bright idea.

Agreed but if any section of the crime cross-section is ignored it can become a feeder for organized crime, drug dealing etc. Bike thefts would likely be a sub section of the auto theft division. They are being investigated but whether the cops have their hearts in it is debatable.
