Pay before you pump coming to Ontario?

I pay at the pump with my credit card 99% of the time, the 1% being when the stupid card reader doesn't work. Works well, especially when I'm on the bike - I don't have to take my helmet off or go somewhere, I swipe, pump and go. It also looks really funny when bikers walk into the stores wearing their full-face helmets.

Btw, it really sucks when you drive/ride into the States and cannot use your Canadian credit card at the prepay-only pump, because you have to punch in your zip code at the pump.

I feel terrible about this.
Someone died for less than $120 lousy dollars
Now there is a widow and an orphan who have a big money problems that cannot be fixed anymore with $120
Had I known, I would had paid the fu*****ng $120 myself if that was all it took to save a life

I thought that only happened back home (Mejico).
For for $20000 is it more worth it?

I highly doubt the (mostly) lower-income citizens know their rights and have access to a million other jobs that will be much different.

Exactly. This poor guy likely felt he didn't have any options after having his paycheck raped by ******** who THINK they're getting one over on the big oil companies. There was a heartbreaking story in the Star about this gas attendant's family... talked about his little boy missing playing chess with his dad.

I never had a drive off come out of my pay. I worked at a Sunoco during highschool for a few years.

I have never heard of any minimum wage employee having a drive off taken out of their pay. I don't know where people get the idea that it does.

If someone robs a bank does it come out of the teller's pay??

It was common practice at a gas station where I worked as a kid.

I heard someone this morning say "just another Indian dead... there are a billion more to replace him.. no biggie"

I have never kicked anyone out of my stores until today.

Yes, where's your store. I'll spend my money there.

I worked, for 1 day at the then Sunoco on Erin Mills /403 location. I was explicitly told that runners would be docked from my pay until recovered by police. At the time, being a young teenager, I didn't know the difference. I highly doubt the (mostly) lower-income citizens know their rights and have access to a million other jobs that will be much different.

Well, then your boss was willing to break the law and throw his/her own employees under a bus.

It's simple theft. Lots of business have to deal with theft and a certain amount of it is simply the cost of doing business. Lots of gas stations already require pre-pay at night and at the pumps farthest from the kiosk.

Maybe this loss of life will help enlighten others and prevent them from putting themselves in harm's way for no reason.

I always use credit card, would never notice the change. There are no reward points using cash.

Same. Most of the pumps in Richmond Hill are "Fast-Pay" or Pre-Pay anyway. Not to mention in the newer gas stations my buddy says the person working inside has to release the pump for use if you don't pre-pay or use plastic. Plenty of time to check the plates.

As for those saying that it's being treated like a criminal I would like to point out that most other transactions involve you paying before acquiring a product or commodity. Gas is one of the few that isn't like that.

Heard some of that as well. Respect to you sir.

shell/husky/the rest: swipe and go. a few more seconds, just have to remove gloves.
esso: swipe, leave card in, wait for connection, enter pin #, remove card THEN pump. fml

I have a MBNA canadian credit card, I was never asked to enter my my address in PA, NY, NC or TN. Just something to look into for convenience? YMMW.

Pretty standard from what I've seen.

I always pay by credit card at the pump, so much more convenient

having lived in the states for a number of years more then a decade ago where pay at the pump was normal ... i don't see the difference in having it here. I pay at the pump anyway and I think it would make pumping gas a faster experience then waiting for people to go in and pay for there gas if this forces some people to get a credit card or use there debit to make the pumping go faster for themselves...

why pay cash for gas ? you get no rewards that way ...

Then you were taken advantage of.

Lots of people are... The only reason we need laws is because people are **********.

I use pay pass, so I don't really care one way or another. I used to work at a gas station and I remember the owners being ****** when the pay at pump option was introduced, the logic being that there is no chance to upsell the customer on various in store items (due to the reduced traffic). I don't know if it made any economic impact or not.

Also, I didn't have to pay if there were any gas and dash, this was back in high school and in my 5 yrs working there, I think I had maybe about 3 gas and dash. Once, we got the plate of a guy and reported to the cops. The cops showed up to his house and he simply said, "oh, did I do that? *****, I though I paid, ah well, I'll just go in and pay" and that was that.

Only bad thing about prepay on your credit card is they hold $125 for 5 business days everytime you fill up.
Found that out when I filled up 4 times ($18 bike fill-ups) in 5 days and tried to make a purchase and they said the CC was maxed when I clearly had room, Went to the bank and thats what they told me.
