Pan America

I still think it's ugly and it's not growing on me.

I'm sure it will get great reviews, and might even deserve some of them.

But even if I loved it, I wouldn't buy the the first year model. The entire bike is new and shares absolutely nothing with ANY of HD's current offerings. I'd let them embark on the learning curve without me for a model year at least.

If the engine is as promising as HD makes it sound, I cannot for the life of me figure out why they dropped the Bronx.
That's the only HD I would ever have considered purchasing, even if it's a long shot.

I doubt its completely gone, more likely just being delayed.

Yes exactly, they need a win with the Pan American, which so far is looking good. Once that gets moving I can see the Bronx being back on the table. The LiveWire didn't really pan out, market is not ready, but this is right on.

Livewire is just too much money ,25 to 30 grand they will sell a lot. 38,000 plus is a tough sell for that bike .

The speed sensitive suspension lowering is a great idea. Obviously targeting the mature crowd

I suspect the Bronx was an easy prototype, but relatively hard to get into competitive shape. I think HD is understanding new riders do not place as much weight on heritage, the want competitive performance and dependability.

The 1l street fighter competition is healthy, rushing into the market to take last place in shootouts? Not so healthy.

I suspect you might be right on this. Just watched the 44 Teeth first ride of the updated Speed Triple, and reading between the lines, it won't trouble the Tuono/Super Duke dominance of the class. It's also a year where there's two brand new contenders (Speed Trip and S1000R), a heavily updated Tuono and the special Super Duke RR, so the Harley wouldn't get as much attention as the new bike, either. It's probably the most competitive class in motorcycling at the moment, so not an easy place to jump in. Especially when the whole revamp of HD will be impacted by how the new models hold up against the new competition...

Seems to have good acceleration. I hope they never put it in a sport bike or a streetfighter. HD has no recent history in GP or similar racing. They just don't have the engineering culture for it. The new Sportster will be interesting. Here's some young guys who did a test drive. Seem pretty exhilarated.

Here's the ADVRider review.

Have you put in your deposit?

Despite not taking my own advice, not buying a 1st year model is never a bad idea.

I've seen...many eye roll situation in mfg.

FIFY. i had to re-read your sentence 3 times to figure out which direction you were going.

It's real, as seen a Mackies. Nice looking bike, doesn't seem as tall as I thought it would be, but I didn't sit on it. Seat appears to be on the lower setting position. Looks nothing like any other HD except for the fit and finish of paint etc. The nav screen is quite larger then I expected. This is the standard they didn't have any special versions (all sold).

I don't like the tank logo and the pipe is obviously huge but it's not too ugly from the side. Solid meh from this angle. Glad to see they are selling well.

I like the looks of the Pan America, liked it from the first time I saw the concept. Of course I also like my BMW GSA so I seem to have a preference for strange looking bikes. Everything I have read about the bike has been good so far so I think they are going to do very well. A big bonus as well is the massive dealer network. You are never going to be hurting for support if you should need it. I really wish they had gone with a shaft drive though. I love the hassle free nature of them and how little maintenance is needed. I would settle for a belt on the Pan America but the chain is just not something I am interested anymore. Not a big deal for most, just an annoyance for me.

Belt drive is good for the street. Not so good for off-road when stones and gravel can get trapped between the belt and sprocket and chew up both.

Also mud can get caked on the inside of the belt and can stretch the belt, locking up the drivetrain in a worse case scenario.

Yeah yeah, it's a Harley, it'll never leave the pavement, yadda yadda yadda. At least it has to "pretend" to be off-road worthy, like all the ads claim it to be...
