On and off ramps practice stopped by police

Oh I know.
We need some gearhead lawyers who like to stretch the legs of their Ducatis and Ferraris on public highways to get caught in this mess, and only then will the powers that be see a need to overturn this dog's breakfast.

unfortunately, this would do the opposite. because that really is the exact kind of ********* the law is supposed to capture.

....however, any cop at any time can pull you over, take your licence and bike for "street racing and stunting" for whatever reason he feels like, with or without evidence. Period.

Just the way Adolf wanted it. The police are judge, jury and executioner.

Why not? If he knows the length of the ramp and just times you with his watch, that's all he needs. Cop can assume best case scenario for you (you're riding at constant speed and not accelerating) and will simply figure out your speed.

He won't be able to get your distance accurately either. It's difficult to judge distance with the eye. Afterall it's math and is an exact science. How could he tell that you travelling at a constant speed? Again very difficult to judge. Even pacing you needs to be done over a min. distance.

Why would we need radar if a cop can simply say he saw you speeding at x speed? Of course, you would have to argue the point in court if it comes up.

I guess very basic physics (i.e. grade 9 or 11) is very difficult for some people, but university-level law is not... oh well

The track?
I knew someone was going to say that.
I live 5 minutes away from the ramps and I do it daily, and practice for 1 hour to 1 and a half hour each time.
Do you think I can get to the track in 5 minutes, go there daily and anytime I want?
Sure the track is great for the weekends, but I like to practice everyday.
Also the ramps are free if you don't get caught.

That is by and far the lamest excuse I have ever read. Go ahead and continue ramping, which is almost textbook street racing. It is practice for nothing, except the track, which is where you should do this.

If you get impounded, you can't say you haven't been warmed.

Even though I have nothing against on ramp practice, you are doing a really good job building a case against it. I suggest you shut up.

When doing ramps last summer the cops blocked off the entrance to the DVP and stopped the entire group. Most of the group just drove around the cop and went to L&L, but some stopped. One of them was charged with stunting because "his bum wasn't on the seat" (i.e. hanging off on the ramp), had his bike impounded, etc. He is still waiting for his court date, not sure of the details thus far. If they catch you ripping a ramp, they can make your life complete hell, even with no proof :(

the only thing illegal there is that your friend stopped...lol

How fast were you going on the ramp practice sessions? What time of day do you usually practice?\

I am not trying to defend at_28 but if he does take enough precaution and he is more about practicing his lines and throttle control, braking, etc. I don't see that as street racing.

My friend who got stopped does rips it pretty hard on occasions but only after a number of loop around it to make sure the path are clean with no major debris, light traffic and its pretty late at night. So, basically, he is risking only his own life and not endangering or tried his best not to endanger others.

I am not saying I condone his behaviour, personally, I would not go or has the skill to go 120+ on a hairpin ramp :p I do on occasion practice a few loops at slightly higher speed than the obvious 30 to 40km/hr limit. More to try to get a proper lean and throttle control. I don't wait till late at night so there are other vehicles around, so basically I go in and out just following the pace, which is usually 50 to 60km/hr.

After this incident with the cop my friend experienced, I am not sure even if you practice going in at a normal pace like 50 to 60km/hr would be ok. Or perhaps he just ran into a cop who hates bikers and will find any reason to give him a hard time?

Just to reiterate, my friend did NOT get a ticket. He just got lectured on not to go about doing the loop and treat the ramp as a practice ground. He was telling me he was in fact only doing maybe 60 at most 70km/hr around the ramp. Then again, can a cop stop or tell someone to stop practicing let say in a car, perhaps a new driver who is doing the same loop on highway ramps? Or maybe a new rider on a motorcycle doing the same thing on the ramp at posted speed limit just to familiarize themselves better with entering and exiting off highway?

Using ramps to practice.

The downfall no left hand turns.

Sure awesome on rights, noob status on lefts ;)

LOL is right :)

That's why I hate TMP, it wears down the right side of my tire, which is already worn down from the ramps! Maybe we can run it reverse a few times next year :)

The first rule of ramping is: You do not talk about ramping

Every LEO knows that bikers go ramping at the end of the 404.

It was pretty much answered above. Any cop can stop any vehicle at any time.

Also, if the cop tells you to "stop looping", "move along" and/or "keep going", do you really think it would be wise to ignore him and keep doing the ramps? You better move along and get out of there - before they charge you with something ridiculous, because as ridiculous as the charge may be, you are going to waste time and effort to defend yourself in court, so even if you win, you loose cause you were already penalized.

In other words, even if everybody here agrees that it wasn’t reasonable to get a ticket, you already lost.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but a cop "could" charge you under the unconstitutional law called stunt/racing whenever/however he wants.

You then go to court and get it thrown out because you weren't doing whatever they charged you with.

You are then free to go.

You will NEVER get the time and money back, and the cop will never receive discipline procedures for wrongly charging you.

Am I right?

The cop did tell my friend 'if you want to practice, go to a 'freakin' parking lot....

I told him perhaps he should go to a police station with a decent size parking lot and just make circle to practice his leans. Or maybe do a few burnouts while he is there. :lmao:

The fine is $100/per foot of rubber strip left on the pavement.
This goes for burnouts, drifting, etc. So make sure he doesn't do circle or rolling burnouts, it'll cost more ;)

If you get 172'd, you're still out of the immediate penalties.

idk why any rider out there is against using ramps for practice. Late at night, no one is around, variables are blocked by barriers... it's basically the track without formality. The most ideal conditions are there for practice.
