Omar Khadr Gets Bail... A War Criminal? A War Victim? Which is it?

i get that propaganda is going to be unavoidable.. NP did not interview any of his victims... rather presenting an aggressor as a victim... trying to put a human face on omar khadrs victims... i like it.. perhaps they should try an even handed approach... put a human face to the victims from the other side.. and ask them how they feel about their war criminals roaming free and being treated like hero's.... i would be interested in hearing how victims on boths sides have to say.

"he was picked up by american authorities" hmmm... the journalist is going out of her way to legitimize aggressive war.. and not single time did she ask.. are you remorseful of your role in the criminal invasion of afghanistan?.. i was under the impression journalists are required to be neutral.. gossip columnist being the exception of course.

One of his victims?

Khadr's "victim" was one of a squad of heavily armed US special forces attacking a village in Afghanistan. You could just as properly say that the village was simply fighting off uninvited and armed foreign invaders who had no right to be there, and that it was the villagers and its defenders and not the US special forces who were victims.

woah you two have issues. I shared an interview and I get attacked. You sound like Feminazis. Anyone who doesn't agree with your point or presents information and it gets sidetracked then discredit in an insulting manner.

.

i am sorry if yo felt attacked it was not my intention... i have no problem with omar khadr spending the rest of his life in a cell.. as long as its lawful under the geneva conventions and its even... our war criminals are roaming the streets that doesn't seem to be a threat.. but this child who simply defended his home... from bloody mercenaries in uniform went through hell for what??? do you think he will like canada after we helped torture him?.. if we were throwing all war criminals from both sides in guantanamo then yes thats justice... i am sorry but this is injustice... this creates a platform for future war crimes..for future invasions.. and if people resist our criminal activities.. we just declare them war criminals..

we just declare them war criminals..

No, we call them "unlawful combatants" and "terrorists". By doing so it makes it easy to sell the war to domestic audiences and as a bonus we can dispense with such inconvenient formalities like the Geneva Convention when dealing with those "unlawful combatants" and "terrorists".

Our guys are the good guys in white hats and all that they do is good, and the other side are the black hat guys and all that they do is evil and against the West.

In real life it isn't quite that simple, but the last thing that the US government (and its sycophantic Harper) wants the common people to do is to start considering the nuances of what its soldiers do abroad in their name.

unfortunately their are no more real soldiers left.. those who fight for justice, honour and whats right..

now a days its a get free university/benefits scam... most simple look the other way when terrorists in suits hijack Canada...defend canada from enemies who are actually attacking Canada...corrupt politicians...

absolutely nothing unlawful about defending your self/family/community/town/city/state from war mongers

A few points.
1) Confession in Gimto under conditions most of us cant even imagine doesnt amount to much.
2) When you go to someones country and bomb the shi& out of them, kiloling hundreds of thousands of innocent civillians (non militants), you can expect a few to rise up. The real terrorist is the invading country. Lets remember, 9/11 was a Saudi backed job not and Iraqi/Afghani attack.
3) I dont know if he did it or not but if you attack first, isnt it called self defence? As far as i remember, American is the one who started this war and tens of others in the last century.

i was in a protest about 4 years ago, chanting for his realese in Canada ( to bring him back to Canada even if in he would still be jailed).

It's easy to be blinded by media and call whoever that stands to the militant capitalism of the U.S, terrorist but lets examine who went to war where and who killed millions of innocent people who are all someones loved one, father, mother, child... you get the picture.

Im sure many of you who want him dead would not sit around sucking your thumb if someone came and killed your mom and dad for no reason!

I disagree. The soldiers are real and their motives for the most part are pure enough going in, but they are pawns in government foreign policy.

Once in the theatre though, things change. You don't look at it from the shoes of the other side because you are consumed with following orders, meeting objectives and most of all staying alive. Military culture does not tolerate questioning orders and it does not tolerate questioning the acts of fellow soldiers on the firing line. Once in that mindset there simply is no real opportunity to stand back and objectivity look at the situation as it appears from each side.

At least one in five Canadian soldiers coming back from Afghanistan are coming back with PTSD and other forms of mental illness, depression, etc. One in five represents those who are admitting problems. The real number is likely far higher as military culture does not look well on those who exhibit weakness of any sort.

Use of the word "victim" might have been the catalyst for that. I find it telling in the interview where the legitimate soldier talks about legitimate opponents. Like shaking hands sometime in the future. I find it odd that somebody would lay life and limb never mind eyesight on the line for what essentially ends up being a business arrangement. Uncle Sam sure does a good job convincing people.
Except for exceptional circumstances real soldiers defend borders and homeland. It's not a job.

we have a different approach to the subject.. thats respectable in a my book

lets agree to disagree.. i have yet to see a military unit place the prime minister under arrest for being a foreign agent/traitor/unlawful enemy combatant/terrorist... we encourage thats sort of a thing overseas.. in countries where democracy didnt support our favourite puppet..how about some at home...

Saw American sniper last night. Great scene where guy uses a drill on a child's head . That guy should be over here hanging out with the Khadrs at Starbucks for sure if he isn't already

Sounds like what ISIS and the rest of the Sunni terrorists are doing right now. They are the real War Criminals; not our Canadian soldiers. How dare you compare our soldiers to Nazis? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Our Canadian soldiers are involved in wars that are not ours and inadvertently, they are making Canada less safe for Canadians.
I'd rather Canada going back to the peace broker country everyone used to know it to be. Instead, we are becoming a warmonger and a little American shadow state.

Google up Matchee and the Somalia Affair. Our guys wearing the white hats are not always as pure as we would like to believe.

Sorry to jump in without reading the entire thread, but i have a question that goes to the very root of this issue: why was this 15 year old charged with a crime at all? There was a war. People were shooting and killing each other on both sides. Is one side not allowed to fight back?
