Nova Scotia's mass casualty commission

Yep, 6-8 month wait list for a new one. "Second hand" ones with 0kms at dealerships selling for $10k over msrp. 3-4yr old used ones with 100k on the odo selling for msrp on kijiji lol. The industry has gone insane. Might sell my van now and wait 6 months to buy a new one...
A buddy bought a PU a dozenish years ago for $25K, put 200,000 KM on it and sold it for $20K. Replacement was $90K. One option he doesn't like is a $300 gas tank fill up.

It's gas. I saw $1.93 this AM. Diesel was $2.30 The gas station has a mortgage broker.

That is the shooters car. The only way to tell, is it had a ram bar on the front. Real cruisers don't.View attachment 54872

That's the first picture I've seen. How long did he have it like that?

I thought he was playing dess-up with a car not unlike the ones the security companies use.

My brother was a Metro cop 50+ years ago and liked to look the part 24/7. He bought a yellow Dodge but not the chrome yellow the cop cars were back then. Also it was a Dart 2 door.

One day he showed up in civies, off duty but carrying a 22 revolver. He had ego issues. Fortunately he and TPS parted company shortly thereafter.

The hiring practice for many police departments year ago got a lot of guys into the role that were gungho head crackers . I knew several, thank goodness they revised hiring strategy and get guys that are less confrontational and maybe don’t club first , think later.

Red on blue fire. Fire chief is rightly ripping into commission and police for throwing up a blue wall to protect themselves which will ensure that no improvements can happen.

Reading between the lines, it looks like they went from confused to panic in two seconds.

poor training, or poor recruitment process....
So far all voices in blue have been unified. They did everything right as per procedure and training and would do nothing different. The entire tree is so rotten they cant even see it. I'd love to see he training manual that says to open fire with rifles on a fire hall without identifying yourself and then speed away without checking who got shot (because you missed your target with every bullet).

The blue line monologue will continue, because they have all been briefed on the value of a lawsuit , which will follow this inquiry , guaranteed . And the career train wreck ( rightly so) of saying anything other than , we did it right. Admission of dumfukery would have them guarding the seal population on Baffin Island .
This inquiry is like every rcmp internal look in the last 50yrs . More paperwork .

Shooting at the firehall: I get it. The cops were scared and excited, and didn't have a firm grip on what was happening when they arrived at that firehall and thought they saw the bad guy and started shooting.
Look at where the firehall (and surrounding area) was stuck by bullets. It looks like they were "spraying n' prayin"... bullets EVERYWHERE, no where near where the guy in the orange vest was... almost like the cops were running away and haphazardly popping off rounds while they ran... WITH A M4 (AR) CARBINE
If that is the much touted "training" they got for the M4, the RCMP needs to rethink that training.

As an aside: They did a study in California about the number of shots cop take and their accuracy. I don't remember the numbers but it was something like cops shoot 12-15 times for every hit. Criminals were MUCH more accurate, like 4 or 5 shots per hit (Maybe cuz the criminals have to buy their own bullets).

I was talking to a cop recently that had to do his yearly firearm qual. They shoot three magazines a year on qual day. The rest of the time the gun lives in the holster. It's a bleeping dangerous policy. He knows he is woefully low on skill and would prefer not to carry but that's not an option. Policing in north america really needs a huge rethink. I highly suspect everyone would be much safer if only ~10% of the cops were armed but they fired hundreds of rounds a month to stay useful. It works in the UK.

relative works at YRP. they get barely any training or practice. most of his coworkers and him have their RPAL, own guns and practice on their own time.
last I heard they are even renting out space to perform entry drills with airsoft to keep their skills up. (privately)

My brother was a long time Metro cop. They used to get a box of bullets that were marked with pink nail polish and you had to hand in the empty cartridges... that was "qualifying". This was when they carried a .38 revolver.
He used to sneak me into the range.
The second time there I noticed I was shooting pink bullets. LOTS of pink bullets. Seems I was qualifying my brother... AND a couple of his friends.
My brother had a "sharp shooter" badge, and he was the first to admit he was probably better off throwing the revolver at you than shooting at you.
Other cops I know; a primary reason they joined the force so they could carry a sidearm and are VERY much "gun" people that shoot every chance they get, and are quite good at it.
But then... there is HUGE difference between standing at a desk and shooting at a cardboard target and trying to defend humanity in an active shooter call

If any government screw up was documented and used as a precedent to set realistic standards it would bankrupt the government. Oops that's us, the taxpayer.

I can confirm that many many LE officers are also members of gun clubs where they use high powered pistols, not rifles.

My buddy who is YRP , brings a lot of co workers out to our gun club , but it’s all clay pigeons. If you were running away and any of them had a shotgun , odds are pretty good they would wing you.
I think he and his friends are all capable with a handgun as well , but that’s 8 guys out of a couple thousand .

I'm sure there are quite a few cops that shoot often either for fun or out of a feeling of duty. I am sure there are more that shoot the mandatory 40 rounds a year and nothing more. Then a bunch in the middle. I still think that if department doesnt want to pay and equip them to be shooting in the order of 100 rounds a month with each of their service firearms, it is negligent to have them carrying in public. That is a policy/financial problem not an individual officer problem.

Some officer in Yrp is nicknamed "locker pop" , having fired twice into his locker putting a firearm away. They exist.

I had two friends who worked for armored car company’s. They said mandatory gun range every two or three months As I recall. These two also tried to join local police, rcmp and border services. Failed all thankfully. These are the head bangers need to have a gun macho men types.

Well….as I recall they are supposed to clear their weapons before returning to the locker area. So how is that possible?

Poor firearm discipline? You've seen the videos of the crap that happens when they pull their guns. Sweeping each other, people downrange of their target, etc. It's a complete crapshow. Again, not the fault of individual officers, their firearms training is entirely inadequate for the role they are told to fulfill.
