No more license stickers…

So I saw the announcement today…

It’s clearly a vote tactic to pander to a demographic he’s not getting.

Also discussion of the 412/418 having tolls removed.

What else will he start giving away? How are we going to make up the shortfall? New tax? Levies? Offloading you the municipalities of services? Health care privatization?

I’d rather pay the $120/year as I have a sinking feeling this will cost us much much more in the long run.

Perhaps.

But they're also doing it out west as well:

And Alberta did the same last year:

I had to cough up payment this morning for 5 vehicles

Now I sit and wait for my cheque

People screaming about the $1B lost revenue per year. Yes. But what is the 'net' loss? Collecting the $1B and dispensing stickers ain't free.

They claim net loss is something like $4 million a year, but that could be creative accounting. You can't close all the Service Ontario kiosks, people still need them for vehicle registrations, health cards and drivers licence renewals.

So I guess this means if I ride around with an old sticker on my plates I wont get pulled over?

If SO offices are privately owned, IIRC, then it reduces an income stream for them.

I’m not sure how much it costs or what the net would be, but you’re correct I’m wrong in just tossing the $1B revenue figure. $400k is not that much out of a billion though.

I guess that’s about an extra $300 into the vacation fund for next year for 2 cars and a bike.

He did give all the nurses a one shot $5000 pandemic, thanks for hanging around cheque . Stealing the liberals playbook …..

Holy crap. They still require renewal just without paying or sticker. Cost needle will barely wiggle but income needle drops to zero.

Sounds like it. I wonder if they'll still pay SO if you walk in to do it. If they drop compensation to zero, the franchises will have to do something to cover their processing costs.
My guess is they want to let the current contracts expire. They are rapidly transitioning to online delivery by making more services available through the web. I'm guessing the private operators will need to adjust their business models as they adapt to a digital world.

I don't know how independent operators bill the gov't. Considering the speed they operate at AND their rejection rates between 15-45%, they can't be starving for fees.

The one I know has a very low rejection rate. Government is slow to audit and rejected transactions automatically get reversed to office with little useful appeal path. It will be interesting to see what path Douggie follows. To save the most money, the government run SO's should be whacked (incomes approx double private/agency/franchise offices, all staff got paid full time during covid even if office had no work, much higher rejection rate (why care when you are making your money and basically invincible?), etc). Politically, he will probably kill agency stores (or starve them to death) as he can sell it as removing unnecessary transfer of money from government to private sector. Don't let numbers get in the way of a political decision.

I agree the right thing to do would be to kill off the corporate stores, force as many transactions online as possible, leave the outsourced stores to support Luddites. I'd start doing the same with LCBO.

I'm not sure how the deal works, but I suspect the private stores get some basic operating subsidy and a transaction fee. The local store by us ran 1/2 hours for the last 2 years, which a rep explained is the minimum the gov't would let them operate. Lines were stupid -- nowhere near the 15-minute target, probably 4x that.

There are lots of people (disabled, elderly) that still need to use Service Ontario.
By closing offices Dougie will make their already difficult lives even tougher.
He won't pay the nurses or the child care workers, but by gosh his March budget will be something to behold (sarcasm font).
