One of the tricks that a Rogers rep told me to use to become eligible for a deal only available to new customers was to use a "basement apartment" at the same address.
Most things are in my name (for simplicity). I could use that plan and get my wife to sign up as a new customer. A house down the road from us has the ex-wife living in a basement granny suite and ex-husband owns the house. Kid they have together moves up and down depending on whos week it is.Same name but now living in the basement? Do the CSRs call that the Pity Plan?
But what about private sales and replacement ownership.And the other shoe has dropped. Basically Douggie is killing SO. Dealers now register new vehicles online and hand out plates. Probably a few SO will survive to provide service but most will die off (and I suspect all the agency stores will be gone just leaving the expensive, inefficient public sector offices). My neighbour with a SO office has picked up a full-time job as they see the writing on the wall.

The licence office in Milton is staffed with the most miserable women on the planet.
Sadly, in most cases, government saving money as many of us push for is directly related to people losing jobs. In most of those cases, with the education and attitude that those employees have, they will take a substantial pay cut at their next job.I guess the whole “things could be worse” applies in this situation.

Freeing up wont go the way you hope. Dealers were the profitable part of the business. Lots of straight forward transactions, all paper work in order, bang them out. Losing dealers means agency (privately operated) SO are probably closing the doors and people will have to deal with the public sector stores (staff there are much better paid but normally grumpier and lazier as they have public sector invincibility).I resent that statement considering I work for gov't! As for SO and this new registration. In all honesty I'm surprised it took this long. A large portion of my time working at a car dealer was going to SO, upsetting people while I cut in line, and getting car plates at the local SO.
I think this can very easily be done by the dealership, and I would think that it frees up the SO staff for other work (used cars, UVIPs, OHIP, IDs, etc.).
There was typically only 1 kiosk that would deal specifically with dealers, and that lazy woman (I recall her being very lazy) NEVER helped the girls at the other kiosks that were dealing with the general public, even if she had no dealers to help out.
I hope that this new rule will free up that additional person to move things forward at the other kiosks.
EDIT: I watched the video...the only thing this removes is the physical act of going to the SO by the dealer, and SO to issue a new plate / register a new/used car.
In theory...much easier for switching plates from your trade to the new car.
And it does free up the SO staff to deal with the general public, instead of the dealers.

Ontario operates 82 locations. 207 are private. Douggie has just cut revenue by >50% on the private businesses that are only compensated on commission. Expect 207 less locations very shortly. For ontario operated sites, the dealer employee is now freed up but as with MPs experience, dont be shocked if that doesnt mean much. If they didnt want to deal with the public in the past, they sure as hell wont want to deal with them now.I have 3 SO small offices within 10 minutes of my house -- all do the same thing, inefficiently at best. Exactly the same. Government run offices pay more in salaries than gross collected by private offices.Is there any difference between what the public and private ones can do? If not, why not close the government ones, and leave it to the well-run private offices. SO is a lot more than dealer license plates and stickers. Replace lazy employees with those who can get stuff done quickly = more profit.
