How does he sign over the certificate if he comes to your house?

I like how this thread is a complete journey from considering a bike to having bought one and beyond.

Just signed up for the April 6/7 weekend at RTI and plan on getting my M1 mid January.. just have to buy the handbook and study now.

And the fun part - buying gear. Ideally I wanted to go for the K4 helmet by AGV since it's fiberglass at a good price point, a leather vented jacket preferably by A* but am considering others as well, gloves, boots and some kevlar jeans so that I can ride to work in them most days.

Is it worthwhile waiting for the motorcycle show in Jan to get deals or am I better off hunting for gear at various places now?

So gear wise (sorry i skipped a few posts...congrats for the bike btw) I'd suggest test fitting like you said, and if you're ordering from the us

get it shipped to CBI Niagara (on the other side of the border) and do the crossing yourself.

You might save on duty and will avoid any silly brokerage fees.

Thanks! I'm pretty familiar with the US shipping process as a BMW owner getting raped with ridiculous auto-part quotes. I would prefer to buy local and have a budget of about 800$ (tops) to get decent kit. Is this enough or should I be looking to splurge a lot more?

Here's what I was thinking:

Gloves: $100 (A-star SPX's or equivalent)
Helmet: $250-$300 (AGV K-4 fibreglass)
Jacket: $300-$400 (icon overlord or A-star perforated leather GP Plus)
Boots: $100 (3/4 boots)
Kevlar Jeans: $150

Like I said I'd prefer to keep it local so will be trying to riderschoice for most of the apparel and Kahuna for the helmets (they're the only ones that stock the K-4)

Two main questions:
1) How is my budget and my gear selection?
2) What do I do for timing (since I'm in no rush) Do motorcycle stores have boxing day deals?? Riders choice said they are offering show-prices in store - the same as what I would get in the motorcycle store in Jan. Do you suppose they'll have better deals on the 26th? I'm in North York/Sauga area and would prefer not to drive out far to visit RD or Sturgess.

Thanks

1) Gear selection looks good to start. You are covering a lot of the basic areas that a lot riders don't seem to worry about. The only additions could be shin/knee guards and CE armour shorts of some kind. My gear setup is very close to what you have on your list. I may get a K3 or a Grid next season.

2) You have about 4 months before you start riding (well if you wait for the good weather) so there is lots of time to buy gear. Look for the sales at boxing day and also Royal Distributing and GP Bikes have good spring sales too. I bought most of my gear 10 days before my RTI course but I didn't have my bike yet so that is a little different than your situation. I didn't buy my knee/shin guards and Knox Shorts until a month after I got my bike. I did have armored overpants but it was too hot to wear them in the summer for me.

When you are buying helmets on sale look at the manufacturing dates, if they are a few years old then you may need to replace them soon. I believe (though some may correct me if I am wrong) helmets have a 5yr or so shelf life. They will still work after that but they won't be as effective.

I didn't get any of my gear during these "sales events". Anytime I went in they didn't have the gear I wanted or the colours available. I could have saved a couple of hundred I am sure by getting different gear that offered the same protection but I decided to go with what I wanted instead and paid the difference.

Definitely good for a start!

Honestly check out the shows in Jan, PM sturgess cycle for pricing, might be worth the trip (i dont regret it AT ALL...saved like 40-50$ on my jacket..was same pricing as in the states, but then didnt have to drive to niagara + duty)
But yeah as stated up there ^^^ take your time

GP bikes was giving out 20% off coupons at the show last weekend and I've got a few if you want them. They're valid in the store, and online.

Also GP will be at the January show with 20% off everything there so you can pick it up then. I believe right now they have their free shipping promotion so may be worth looking at as well.

Last January I bought a helmet with transition visor, boots, and gloves for around $450-500 all in. Then also bought a jacket from Suzuki of Newmarket (Icon Contra) for $150 all in.

I can't seem to find anywhere with a good selection of gear.

I just picked up the new AGV K-4 evo helmets from Kahuna PS (upgraded to fiberglass shells from the plastic K-3) and placed an order for the A* GP-R Perforated Leather Jacket and A* SPX gloves with Riders Choice. I was pretty disappointed they didn't have a decent selection in gear and that I have to wait till Feb to get my jacket in.

I still need to pick up some 3/4 boots, kevlar jeans and some knee guards (bonus if kevlar jeans already have some CE protection in the knees- if anyone knows of such a kind please let me know)... but this is where it gets tricky... since boots and jeans are highly dependent on sizing I'd definitely want to try them on before I bought them and I'm finding a hard time finding any store in the GTA with a decent selection/pricing on jeans/boots. I see a lot of good deals online but I don't want to take the risk since it will likely be cross-border shipping and such.

Any ideas?

^^ ditto GPBikes and Royal out on the east end, between these two stores you should find what you want locally to try on.

I didn't like the jeans with Armor, it did not seem to fit snug enough. IIRC these were Teknic kevlar jeans. I ended up with Bull-it jeans, as I felt they had a good amount of Protection in them Kevlar wise.

Thanks. All that I have left to get are some riding jeans (I'll definitely check out bull-it at RD when I get some time to head over there) and some boots.

My gear list so far:

AGV K-4 Evo Lid - $300
A* GP-R Perf Leather Jacket - $400
A* SPX Gloves - $100
CE back insert - $40

Left to get:
Jeans with armour - budgeting $175
Boots with good protection - budgeting $175

That puts me at a total of just about 1250-1350$ for gear :( .... ssshhiitt...

lol... so looking into these bull-it jeans.. they seem pretty good.. especially with the added knee protectors I won't need to buy uncomfortable knee pads. Two birds with one stone. Going to check them out soon at RD or GP.. also are they side by side!?!

Also decided on the SMX-1 boots.

Can anyone else chime in on my choice of boots/riding jeans?

Cheers

I almost went with SMX-1's but ended up going with the TCX ones. They are very similar boots. I was at Royal Distributing and spent about 30 mins or so in each one walking around getting the feel of which one fit better. In the end for my feet and and legs the TCXs where the better fit and choice for me.

I went there looking at SMX and went home with something different.

Which TCX boots did you end up getting?

Also what is everybody's thoughts on what to do about leg armour... I plan to do short-commuting on the bike and would like to curb my budget a little.. here are my two options:

1) Bullit/Draggin Jeans with optional insertable knee armor ($200ish)
2) Buy knee/shin pads and wear my existing jeans over them and take the pads out when I get to work ($50)

I got TCX S-Sportour Boots.

Not sure about others but I bring different clothes for riding and then some for the office. I always wear full gear and in the summer heat you are gonna sweat and smell. This past season I did where leg armour (and hip and *** armour) under my regular jeans. Depending on your job you may not need a change but for me sitting in my riding clothes all day at the office doesn't work. Another guy in my office does that, well he doesn't smell the greatest at anytime of the years (not a very well kept person) and in the summer I can smell him outside from quite some distance. I don't wanna be "that guy".

I just bought a pair of Classic Draggin Jeans without any armour yesterday (Xmas present I picked for myself), plan to where my Knox shorts and A* Knee/shin guards under them. I am looking to upgrade my knee shin armour next season.
