Thanks!

What do you think of this: http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...2010-Kawasaki-Ninja-250-SE-W0QQAdIdZ432595471

Also, I think I might pick this up now and just transfer ownership over but leave it uninsured (as I won't have my M1 license till mid Feb 2013)

I want to register for the RTI course but they don't start till April I think (edit: Registration begins Monday) I wish I could get my M1 tomorrow and be able to plate and register the bike but it will expire before I can take my RTI course.

Also.. if I plan to buy a bike now and just transfer the ownership and not register/insure it till the spring can I still do that? Or do I HAVE to get it registered within a certain time period of buying the bike.. I'll let you guys figure out the math on how this wouldn't work out for me.

Too expensive. Buddy bought an '11 for $3400 never dropped with lots of extra$. Just wait until spring to register it if you don't want insurance now although technically you are legally required to register within 6 days but I wouldn't worry a bit about that. Buy now but haggle that price down. Usually people in need of cash selling at end of season.

Personally I wouldn't buy a 250.

Compare the prices of the 250r with the used ones. Usually the brand new ones aren't that expensive. Maybe a couple hundred than a used one of the same year. The reason I would recommend a new one is because you never know what's wrong with the bikes on kijiji and places like that. There are some good bikes without any problems, but there are some bikes, and you being a beginner will not be able to spot them out. So unless you take someone knowledgeable, make sure the owner is not hiding any problems with the bike because it can become a safety issue. Good luck buddy and welcome to the wonderful hobby. Wish you luck buddy!

Thanks a lot for all this support and advice. What would happen if I did not register it within the 6 days? What kind of penalty/fine am I facing then?

Also, I'm a lone wolf when it comes to the motorcycle world and none of my friends ride or know the first thing about bikes. Would anyone like to come check this 250 out with me this Sunday? I'll be driving down to Eglinton/Keele area from Yonge/Sheppard.

Cheers!

I would bro, but I have an exam... I would highly recommend you take someone with you that knows about bikes. Good luck buddy.

I might be able to.. studying for exams might get in the way though. I'll send you my number and we can talk

This is definitely the time of year to buy. I kinda wish I would have waited to put mine away in storage and sold it and bought a 600cc. Have seen a few good deals that I would have jumped on. Oh well, spring is just around the corner.

As for buying new don't forget about the full prices = more tax, plus add in Freight and admin fees before tax. So let say a 2012 250 would be for example $4200 plus tax = $4700. A new 2013 300 is 5400 + pdi/freight($500) + admin/lic (say $150) plus tax = $6,800ish. That's a big difference. Now last season I was in a similar situation and went new and paid the extra, but I wanted my first bike to me new and have warranty.

There are tons of people upgrading like me from a 250 to something larger so the used 250 market will always have a lot of choices available to you. Take your time and get a great deal.

Wow.. so many thanks to Tricky for meeting up with me and checking the bike out for me.. Looks like I got myself a '10 ninja.. with 5000KM on it (finalizing it on Sunday)

The only problem was that the bike HATED the cold.. had to run for a LONG time with full choke to get it warmed up (it was stored for a month now and the never turned on).. also it was cold as balls tonight. Going to get the sale finalized this Sunday and get it towed to my garage to be kept until Winter.

Anyone with a 250r chime in on how hard it is to start these things in the cold.. how long to keep it running before riding it... and how it starts in the summer time? People have said that they use choke to get it started in the summer as well?

Congrats man. How much did you end up paying?

Join a dedicated Ninja 250 forum and your questions will be answered and more. Lots of information on those sites on how to do basic maintenance items such as oil changes, coolant flush, etc. I'd recommend a full fluid change in the spring. Some bikes have certain recommended items to check if you buy used. You can find information on dedicated forums.

Congrats...Yup wife's bike will not run now without some choke at all times. Common concern not an issue. Summer time there is absolutely zero issues with starting or running.

Thanks so much everybody for all the advice. Wicked thanks! I just picked up my bike through CAA - Free Delivery :) and now it's sitting nicely in my garage. Going to add some fuel-stabilizer and cover it up for the winter (wish I wasn't such a noob so I could clean out the carb's and stuff as well but I'll save that for next year)

I figured I'd be a good OP and upload some pics.. enjoy

2010 Ninja 250R Special Edition - only 5000km on the odo
Yoshimura slip on and Flush LED front signals
Fender Eliminator and (lime green or black) Rear Seat Cowl coming soon!

Looking nice. Don't forget to take out the battery or hook it up to a tender or else you might wonder why the bike won't start in the spring.

Congrats!!

http://www.ninjette.org is a great Ninja 250 site if you are not already on there.

As for cold starts, even on cool 10C fall mornings I would have mine warming up at least a minute or two on full choke, then down to half for another minute or so. Would leave it on half for about a block into riding and then turn off the choke. Some days I would still really need to feather the throttle/clutch to keep it from stalling. It never did but just the fun of carbs. No biggie.

Thanks. Definitely on ninjette.

Just ordered an OEM Lime Green Solo Cowl, a Jardine FE Kit and a tank pad. Coupled with the yoshi exhaust, I think I'm set. Just transferred the ownership on the bike today (unfit/unplated) and will be getting the ins/safety for the spring.

Which brings me to my next question. Since the bike is technically un-rideable without plates.. what is the best way to go about getting a safety in the spring and how much should I be looking to pay?

Let us know what you think of the Jardine FE re quality. I'd head they were all junk except Yosh, but haven't seen any to judge myself.

To get safetied, you can get a temp permit on the bike from the ministry.
Or you can... "borrow" a plate, ride with your fingers crossed and get er done. Not advised but within the realm of the feasible.

How much should I be looking to pay for the safety?
