New computer first world problems

Back in the day, people who were building many computers for others used to get a very good discount from the shops, I don't know if that's still the case, but some here might have gone down that path.
Definitely not the case any more. The margin on hardware is bugger all these days. That's why all the big retailers push warranty and service plans to offset the lack of profit in straight hardware sales.

Got tired of waiting for the new ATI cards, so I picked up a 1080 Ti instead.

Will take pics when it arrives, if I ever clean my desk.

Nothing beats building your own rig... Im still running my good ol i5-2500k w/ GTX 770. It's been 6 years and its still running well.

Congrats on the Ti. That's a helluva card. Hope you put it to use on some good games.

Is there a less expensive way to ease into VR at the moment?

other than smartphone VR goggles...

it is expensive because you have two HD images being displayed so you need a decent video card, then the VR headset to display them and the horsepower to play it.

For PC you have Oculus Rift and HTC Vive for no fuss best support they aren't cheap

for playstation 4 you have PSVR, a little cheaper and with a little hacking you can make it work on the PC

There is an open source one but I forgot the brand. your mileage may vary.

Smartphone VR is the cheap way, yeah. I have a Gear VR and it's neat to fiddle around with but it definitely has limitations. What it does best is stereoscopic 360 video

I tried the HTC VR demo and it made me sick as a dog. Kinda turned off after that.

New 1080Ti video card came.
Saw the VR headset on sale at Best Buy with the controls, but don't have the $$$ right now, and would like to try it out first.
Nearest demo is a half hour away.

Not sure if new card is functioning correctly. Fan stop light is still on. Guess I'll have to check the temp.

Card seems to be working fine. New monitor arrived, so I have a new four monitor setup:

No. But if you have a 1080 Ti and want VR, you already have the best possible setup (SLI is ****, CrossFire is better but AMD cards suck).

I bought an Oculus Rift the other day. It's really cool if you're into trying out new tech but the software is in a very prototypical state. The only decent game I've played was Robo Recall. Everything else has been plagued with performance issues or just isn't fun.

Elite Dangerous, which is from the above picture, is supposedly set up for it, and it's included in the basic game. Not sure how well it plays, since I don't have VR setup.

I haven't played Elite Dangerous but did just buy Everspace a few days ago; I tried it in VR ytd.

How it will likely be implemented is:

You'll use your head to view your entire cockpit (really cool! You'll have to move your head around)
Use controller or hotas to actually control the ship

If you don't have your controls memorized, you're gonna be frustrated due to breaking immersion to check. One thing I dislike about cockpit games is that the hand movements won't match what you're actually doing; they matched in Robo Recall due to the Touch controllers being used and made me seriously lose my sense of reality.

Also forgot to mention about your card fan thing: most GPUs actually turn the fan off when its not being stressed enough. We've come A LONG WAY from the old days due to dies shrinking in size, and therefore, producing less heat (and stuffing more of them into one spot).

the HTC vive is on sale for $600usd, the Rift is still on sale for $400 USD.
I forget which one has the minimum of 1050ti and which one has the minimum of 1060, but I wouldn't bother with minimums.

Yea, for VR, absolutely do not go with minimum.

You can run current gen games in VR through third party apps but the performance is complete ****. Reason being is because VR resolution is 1080x1200x2 @ 90Hz per eye minimum.

4K resolution renders 497,664,000 images per second @ 60Hz
Oculus Rift renders 466,560,000 images per second @ 90Hz

And 90Hz is required or you get motion sickness (tried it Project Cars at 45FPS in the Rift, almost threw up 5 minutes later)

The technology is really cool though....it's just 2 generations behind graphically, and every game coming out is an innovation without "tried and tested" methods.

Oh.........there is one thing I forgot to mention about VR...
Porn...........:agave:
And the Japanese didn't fail us with their VR games.

Voice Attack has signed up a bunch of celebs, including the woman who does the original computer voice in Elite Dangerous, to do custom voice files for their product with ED. If you can get the delay time down enough, it simplifies the control set up.

Youngest and I, finished (for the most part), putting him together a desktop computer today.

It runs anyway.

Finished rerouting the wires:

A couple of questions and comments:
Wait to see if there are any CPU issues, or shop now to replace the CPU fan that came with the i5?
Is it better to put the big mass of excess wire near the power supply or try and distribute it elsewhere?

I hate small boxes with not much room on the backside for the wiring, combined with ill located access holes.
A nice manual with a large, clearly labelled diagram, should come with motherboards for us old folks.
Horizontal hard drive motherboard connectors may be nice and small, but you can't see them when the board is screwed down, and they tend to get buried under the video card.
We spent a good hour or two, troubleshooting the windows load, because we had the hard drive plugged into the wrong spot. I finally put it into my computer to verify it worked, and format it.
Some of the locking clips on the hd cables they supply, are so big that you can't stack two cables onto the motherboard.

Never play that drinking game, where you drink every time your kid whines, while you're building a computer with them.
You'll die!

Kid will be building next computer while I watch. That or helping with his brothers' computers.

All in all, it was a worthwhile experience.

I can't remember if this conversation already happened elsewhere on the forum... if you're not overclocking, you don't really need a better CPU cooler. Unless you decide that you want a quieter one, but Intel coolers seem quiet enough for me.
