MotoGP 2015

On a side note, I wish Cal was on the podium instead of Redding, IMO he deserves it more. Ah well

Redding was impressive just by binning it earlier and then just sticking it out until the end. Really an interesting race start to finish. Something happened almost every lap!

Yes very, has that ever happened before?? but regarding Cal I just meant in general, he's had the worst luck but has had some amazing rides

just throwing this out there, at the level they are playing there are no radios, its all on the rider to make a call to go in or stay out. I'm thinking the years of experience Rossi has gave him a "golf game" strategy and he was staying out to get into the other guys heads. They would push way to hard to play catchup.
You don't plan a crash, but I think him staying out and making them wonder what he's doing put them off the game.

Rossi is a bright light

Surely no radio, but what happened to his team to let him now through a pit board that he needs to come in??? Total failure by the VR46 team if you ask me. How did also the doctor not know by his experience that the difference in lap time between slicks on dry track strip and rain tire will be 10+ sec per lap on his beloved track ....

To suggest that he races now only Lorenzo, is not what VR46 has been about as far as racing in his career, and therefore he didn't come in much earlier is false to me. I think they clearly f-ed up big time. Imagine the gap he could have on Lorenzo now since he crashed .... If he raced only Lorenzo, I am sure he regrets it now.

Are you implying that VR's team did not tell him to pit in? If so, it's not true. The broadcaster mentioned several times that VR's team had a pit-in board out there for several of the laps that VR decided to stay out on.

How is he regretting it? he is now 23 points ahead when before he was 11?
Why would he be competing against MM if he is 63 points ahead with 5 races to go?

He knew very well what he was doing and no pit board or team was going to make him come in before Lorenzo pitted.

I agree... mxs' first post made no sense, "if he raced only Lorenzo" - that is exactly what Rossi was doing... he just made Lorenzo stay out way too long, probably thinking he would either be dropped much sooner or would cause him to crash before changing bikes. The fact Lorenzo came in early and then crashed... that crash was a huge mistake on his part, I think he would have come around turn 1 ahead of Rossi for sure, with the undercut from going in early and being on the correct tire.

JLo is a perfectionist and probably has OCD too. He spent more time in the garage talking to his engineer than out on the track but his lap time was impressive. Look at how annoyed he was when Pol pulled up right next to him when they did practice start, he just didn't like to be disrupted.

This type of person is a pain in the neck to deal with, not people person but they can be very good on what they do. Now all we need is one crash from Rossi and the rest of the races will get even more interesting :D

Yup, the top 3 all F*ed up in my view. It was blindingly obvious they were overdue for dry tires, never mind what the other riders are doing.

He should be regretting it because he could have won the race if he'd pitted with Marquez or before him. He'd be 37 points ahead instead of 23.

Bingo! In championship road racing less is not more.

Are you suggesting Rossi calculated his pit stop thinking he'll crash?

And I believe Rossi confirmed it himself. He screwed up his pitstop. He'd rather be up on the podium that's for sure, and got lucky Lorenzo crashed out.

Absolutely; happy and disappointed.

But enough about that. Time to give credit to the hero of the race, Bradley Smith. He's never amazing to watch, just puts in consistent performances and uses his head all the time.

To not crash on slicks when that rain got pretty heavy, insane. Did you see the replay of everyone passing him when he went down to 21 place?!?! Nice work to keep the sticky bits facing down and to know when to start pushing again as it dried out.

JLo:
“Maybe you can win if you enter the pits and change to the slicks early, but if you crash [in the wet] you can lose the championship,” he said. “So that's why, knowing that I was second, I waited a little bit to see what Valentino was doing because if we both entered the pits at the same time, with dry tyres, maybe I could be faster than him afterwards.

“But if I entered the pits [before Rossi] and then it started raining I could crash and get injured, or he might win and I'd lose 25 points. For this reason I decided to stay out. Maybe I made a mistake. One of two mistakes today.

“Probably I needed to trust more what the team were saying on the pit board because they were looking at the lap times and everything. But now it's too late and it's not worth complaining because it's done.”

“The second mistake was after the second stop. It was very difficult to warm-up the tyre and get used to the feeling again of the slick tyre,” he said. “When Redding passed me so quick I lost a little bit the patience, because I felt I was going too slow and needed to hurry up or they would all catch me.

“That's why for one moment I didn't pay attention that this corner [Turn 15] is a left after many rights. You have to be careful there even in the dry. I didn't pay attention to this factor and I entered too quick for the temperature of the rear tyre. That was the mistake, because if I was a little more patient second or third place would have been mine.”

VR:
"I know that if you pit earlier it is better for the result, but more risky. Two laps before I wanted to stop but it was still raining a little on the back straight and I thought if I stop and it starts to rain more, for me the result would be very bad. Also I check a little bit and Jorge was still behind me, so I decide to continue. I stayed out a little bit too much and I lost time during the next two laps."

“I don't think I could have won, because to win today you have to have your mind free from the championship and take risks, especially with slicks on a drying track. Maybe I could have arrived on the podium or in front of Baz. So third or fourth instead of fifth.

"The people who finished in front of me had nothing to lose. Marc was very fast and did the change at the right moment, but for example Smith - who finished second - didn't change tyres. It was a big, big, big gamble! If it had continued to rain he'd have been twelfth and I cannot do that. Also with Redding [third], he crashed earlier in the race and for that reason he changed to slicks. He made the right decision but it came because of a mistake."

There is no point to discuss their "mistakes", they sat on their bike while we sat on our couch. We all made decision based on the situation at that time, no one could see the future. They are the winner and we are the loser and if you know how to race better than them then you would have been there fighting for the championship.
