Are you kiding me? They were getting 750 reliable HP out of their 2.3L inline 5 motors back in 89 with a stock block. The Group B rally cars were using a more manageable (on dirt/gravel) 600 HP version of the same stock based motors in the 80s. You don't win Le Mans 13 of the last 14 years* by not being able to do things "in house".
*the 03 winning Bentley Speed 8 was a rebodied Audi R8 LMP.
