License plate sticker renewal after lapse

Renewed mine for two years online.

Also renewed my license, but it wouldn't allow me to renew the OHIP card - It says I have to go in for that.

Weird. I was able to renew my OHIP card online recently.

As for the sticker, if it expired you can’t renew it online. Even 1 day beyond expiry.

I renewed mine last year for the cars and they never came in. So I just had the letter confirming renewal in the car. Then paid a few $ as I was at SO anyway, and promptly lost them when I got home.

First, talk to someone at Service Ontario. If your explanation is reasonable, I’m sure they can work with you.

While it’s unfair, the government and law enforcement did accommodate everyone else by providing the exemption for stickers to lapse.

For the few that had stickers lapse in 2019 and need a sticker for 2021 and didn’t drive in 2020, I’m not sure if it was THAT common enough that assuming you did drive/ride in 2020 and should be charge for it makes sense to me.

Thus, talking to the agent at the counter to explain your situation and maybe ask for a manager. And maybe ask your insurance company for an email to provide written proof the vehicle wasn’t insured for 2020?

When I plated my bike this year, the clerk assumed I wanted one year, I asked if I could have it for two and she paused for a minute and then said, yes.

They just didn’t think of it and I could have walked out only paying for one year.

If they can’t waive 2020, they should be able to provide an explanation or involve a manager to see if there are any options.

A little bit of empathy and kindness can be motivating to the clerk at Service Ontario. They get flack for long wait times etc. Kill them with kindness and they seem to respond well.

That’s all I got. Good luck!

If it expired in 2019, you dont have to pay for 2020. They figure if you were driving it, police would have noticed. Only stickers that expired during covid have to pay for time in the past.

I've heard that the police have a camera set up in their cruisers that read your plates as you drive by. Their computer tells them if your plate is expired, in which case they pull you over. A buddy of mine had an auto shop and the cops would sit along the side of the road out front and hit people all day. This was before covid of course. Doesn't really apply to the OP's question but thought it may be good to know. They don't have to pull you over to check your plate/ ownership to see if your plates are expired.

ALPR has been used for years. I see it most often on cop cars on the 407. Shooting fish in a barrel and act as enforcers for the foreign owners.

Stickers today. Was asked if I wanted 1 or 2 years.

I found out that some Service Ontario locations allow you to make an appointment where you would presumable skip the line and go straight to the window. So I did and got a date 3 days later. Then when I went, I did indeed skip the long lineup and go straight to a window. They asked me what I was there for, and then gave me a number and told me to sit down and wait my turn! What a crock. I was 10th in my series, but then realized there were 3 other series (tickets that started with different letters). So I finally got to a window 45 minutes after showing up on time for my 1:15 "appointment". At least I didn't have to stand in line. This was the Westdale Mall location, which has 20+ windows, although only about 6 were manned.

By the way, when I renewed the sticker for the Hawk, they gave me the option of 1 or 2 years, and did not back charge for previous years since my plate expired before COVID.

On the other hand, I realized the plate broke off my SXV, and when I went to replace it, they said they had to renew the SXV first, then transfer the sticker to the new plate. Sine that bike expired during COVID, I had to pay for 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.

I always take the 2yr option. Hate going to the ministry.

With 2bikes 6 cars and a sled and motor home it cost me a small fortune. After a certain amount of vehicles on the road in one person name they should get a discount

Almost afraid to ask, buy what's the need for 1 person to insure 6 cars at the same time?

What is this "need" you speak of???
That's what I'm wondering.
I get the "need" to have 2 bikes insured at the same time, along with the motorhome "needing" insurance. But 6 cars at the same time for 1 person "needing" insurance makes me curious, that's all.

Maybe there is more than one person? I have all family vehicles in my name to make life simpler. Maybe one (or more) are used for work? Maybe he's a baller and drives a different vehicle every day of the week?

No baller here, Makes it cheaper for insurance
