Re: Ottawa police officer charged with stunt driving

So I guess if cops get caught with it then stunting is a good law?

No cop should ever be judge, jury and exacutioner. I take issue with someone finding me guilty before a trial. They take your license for a week, they take your bike/car whatever and incurr thousands of dollars in legal expenses.

I've heard horror stories of cops abusing this bogus law. So no; it's not a good law. It's a slap in the face. I hate this stupid law.

As for the cop getting booked, it's nice to see that some police believe that "no one is above the law"

The OPP are well known for booking cops from other forces. Booking their own? well, that's another story.

nope....it's poetic irony

kinda like when a lawyer who makes a career busting prostitution rings gets busting in bed with a prostitute

Best Use of a Motorcycle Cop Seen Today:

This officer was checking for cell phone use on the freeway and was doing an extremely efficient job of it. He sweep the entire 1km radius in seconds however it only took 1 km before spotting someone and pulling them over.

Great Job!

I saw that before on the DVP in bumper to bumper traffic. Motorcycle cop was slowly cruising on the left shoulder and easily nabbed a cellphone talker

it would only be poetic irony if they actually wrote the law, surely you are not suggesting that cops should somehow only enforce "good" laws, thats not their job. They do what the legislature tells them to do.

Given that Fantino liked to talk as if HE had passed it, when he was the OPP Commissioner, it seems rather ripe for irony.

cops have discretion, and using it properly is their job....and I know quite a few that will not enforce that HTA172 pile of crap for the very reasons we continue to complain about it......easy enough to throw down a careless charge or a 45 over and let the guy ride/drive home

it's a terrible law....and cops who are trying to make a career getting drug dealers and gang bangers off the streets (aka not the traffic nancys) and still have to make their monthly quotas are not wasting the better part of a shift dealing with laying a charge courtesy of a bad law

That's probably related to high school **** that ends up back at the station. You'll be hazed, and outcast into misery.

Discretion is not the domain of the police, but the realm of the crown. I am not suggesting that cops enforce violations that are against the letter but not the spirit, the fact that cops "refuse" to enforce certain laws make them bad cops. And not fit for public service in a democractic society.

While cops certainly have to use an element of discretion because we live in a world of finite resources and there are priorities, I find it to be laughable that people think that cops should not be judge, jury and executioner, while they are doing exactly that if they refuse to enforce the law.

Unless the person being caught was Fantino I don't see your point.
