For the wrong way chase on the 401, maybe I am just too cynical but...

These robberies are very common and the best I can tell is police response is show up late and take a report at best even when there were threats and weapons. Yet in this one there are multiple cruisers responding and chasing, dangerous high speed chase at that. Pursuit in the wrong highway direction even after apparently being told to stand down. Is the only difference, an off duty police officer was threatened with a knife, not a civilian????? That is a question for me.

I really hope the powers that be don't do something stupid like blanket ban wrong way chases as that just tells the criminals the get out of jail free card to play, just head down the closest off ramp.

According to the Durham Police website, they have a Bell 206. I wonder where that was? If it was in the air then they could have just let the van go until it was in a safer location, then boxed him in.

Given the cost to operate the aircraft, my understanding is they are only up for a small percentage of the day. If it was quick to dispatch, I would have assumed they would have used it here as they seemed to send everything else at it.

As per bmd's point, this seems like a giant response as one of their own was threatened. If it was a civilian, the response seems to be paperwork in the future.

Mandating they take some further driver training.. something more advanced than the basic course... could be another idea.
A lot of those driving schools are just teaching people to pass the tests..

Do you not watch Marketplace/W5/etc.? Driving schools aren't teaching people to pass. They're selling certificates for completing the course. No in car instruction required (for an additional fee, of course). Hell, you can buy a certificate online and not have to set foot in the school's office at all.

Not me. I don't need to ask. I know the answer.

Was at the bike shop one day. Friend stopped in while on shift (52 Div.). While we were all chatting his walkie talkie lit up like a xmas tree. People yelling. Shots fired, etc. He reached down and turned the volume on it down to zero. I asked him aren't you going to respond to that? He laughed and said every other cop in the city is on their way. They don't need me there too. Moral of the story? Cops ALWAYS step way up when other cops are involved and take care of their own above everyone else.

I would tend to think they're on some sort of fast response setup and this would be the sort of thing they should have responded to.

The helicopter is available on paper 24/7. They have about four FTE tactical flight officers (two full time and five part time). They have two full time pilots. The numbers don't add up. For 24/7 availability, you need between five and six employees per role assuming none are sick or on vacation or in court or . . . The helicopter flies about 1000 hours a year or alternatively less than three hours a day. While the helicopter may be available for scheduled deployment 24/7, I suspect there is more than 12 hours a day where there is no pilot on duty and a call in and dispatch would take an hour or more.

I did see it.. didn't think of them when I replied. I was thinking of one of the largest "legit" schools in my area.. and that all day long you'll see their cars driving around what is known to be the routes for the test centres.

Another low hanging fruit for DriveTest. Have two or three routes at each center. If the student has to learn multiple routes, that improves their driving over learning a single route and testing is more representative of the students thinking as opposed to blind memorizing of orders.

Aww, big surprise, she is so so sorry of her actions now (after the media and public ****strom this caused) The entire time I was watching it I was thinking to myself how isn't she aware how bad this is going to look once the bodycam footage is released and the media gets a hold of it? If it was anyone else they'd be in handcuffs and tackled to the ground.

District Attorneys are elected, in the US, and this is the sort of thing that gets them UNelected.

EDIT - For the record this DA could also be charged with "resist without violence" and "flight" for not stopping for the cop, under New York State law.

The officer probably would have extended professional courtesy to the DA but soon as she took off the camera were turned on.
Damage control is now the priority. How can they deal with the media and public while still protecting one of their own?

The cost of staff and equipment required to scramble like a WWII air attack would be mind boggling. A bit like a fire department. Using fire as an example the cost per blaze is enormous. If it wasn't for the risk of spreading it might be cheaper to let a lot of the fires burn themselves out.

Toronto is the largest Fire Service in Canada, and the fifth largest in North America, with 84 fire stations; 124 front line emergency vehicles; and over 3,150 staff. Add a helicopter, pilot, ground crew to those for fast response 24/7 and we're bankrupt.

Anti-black racism in TPS was so bad that a superintendent was helping black candidates cheat to get promotions more easily. Oof. Not sure if true but the optics from every direction on that statement suck.

The first female Black superintendent in Toronto Police Service history was in despair over what she believed was systemic mistreatment of Black officers and was attempting to diversify the ranks on her own when she helped six constables cheat in a promotions exam, her lawyer told a police tribunal Monday

Ummm.... anyone else see the problem with this statement?

Would it be right to say there are problems in certain racial communities?

Would it be reasonable to expect a negative mind set from officers constantly seeing the problems repeat?

Could that taint the judgment of others in the force?

Being "Colour blind" isn't as easy as the theorists imply.

I see people cutting me off when I'm driving as a problem in the GTA.

Would it be reasonable to expect a negative mindset constantly seeing the problem repeat?

Honking at them doesn't solve the problem, so I feel justified in breaking the rules and ramming them with my truck.

Being dumbass blind isn't as easy as theorists imply.

Since most of this thread is predominantly negative (rightly deserved imo), here's a positive for the cops (negative for courts as really there isn't much good to say about them). Press release from Barrie cops. 90 second response time to B&E at 03:30. Male, no fixed address on probation arrested. Held for bail but who wants to bet what the court is going to do?

"This morning at 3:27 a.m., the Barrie Police Service received a report of a break and enter in progress at a residence located on Poyntz Street. The elderly homeowner reported they heard someone at the rear of the house on a deck. This was followed by the sound of breaking glass and the sound of someone entering the home.

Responding officers were on scene within 90 seconds and immediately contained the area. As they approached the rear yard, a male suspect was observed running from the property. After a brief foot chase that abruptly ended in the driveway, a 42-year-old male of no fixed address, was taken into custody without incident. He was later transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued, and it was determined that he was on probation for a previous criminal conviction.

Police on scene were able to confirm that a screen had been removed from the window that had been broken and as they arrived, the male had just entered the home, only to hastily exit as the officers made their way to the backyard.

The male has been charged with Break and Enter and with Fail to Comply with Probation Order. He has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing today, by video, with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie."
