Latest SCAM (Sump and Back Flow Inspection)

... Just cuz I'm ME, I have replaced a furnace in my house, that had to be inspected.
The first problem: no one would do the TSSA inspection. I called around and they ALL said they do inspections on their own installs, and have no interest in inspecting some one else's install, for any price.
I'm lucky in that I "know" people... I called a guy that does industrial burners (the guy that got me the furnace for $1700), that called some one, that called some one... and I got someone to come out to do the inspection. Cost me a bag of weed.
I got a copy of the inspection report and he filed a copy with the TSSA... a lot like a safety on a bike.

When we did the pool heater you could call enbridge energy and they would send an inspector to check the gas line connection. They did 1 inspection free, if failed you paid $90 for the next one. I dont know if that still happens .

I hooked up our kitchen gas cooktop, I'm not going to pretend I would calculate gas valving on multiple fixtures and consumption rates, but when a cooktop comes out , and you put in a new flex supply line and new yellow gas seal tape with an identicle cooktop , I dont think its like atomic energy. And I checked with the gas bubble soapy mix from the store.

Somethging that could blow up the house? yes I have an actual gas tech over thank you

I put my own gas water heater in my last house , but it was the older style with a metal chimney vent not a newer blower fan. Milton had VERY hard water which played havock with heaters .
Before I bought out thge reliance heater here I called around about a tankless, the tankless sales lady did not recommend one (at this time) for my installation. A power vented water heater gas replacemnet for this house was quoted $3795. ten yr warranty , so $33 a month , which is about where my rental was $28 +hst.
I just have a strong dislike for Reliance .
My buddy got conned into a 15 year lease on a tankless. Once it was installed they told him he had to sign up for their water softener unit to maintain his warranty. Mississauga water.

He didn't go for it.

My HVAC guy also didn’t recommend a tankless for our house. Which is fine as they were way more $ than the tank one we have in now.

He did mention much more maintenance on the tankless, but I didn’t dig into it further.

I'm lucky my kid is in the mechanical biz, he gets me plumbing and HVAC for cost, and arranges liquor exchanges to handle the inspections.

I had a call a few years ago from "Jimmy's Duct Cleaning". Told the guy to get a life.
He called me back 3 times screaming profanities at me.
Cheap entertainment.
With the duct guy I point out that his company is breaking the law by calling people on the DNC registry and for them to clean my ducts I would have to let a company that hires criminals into my house.

I didn't think there was any actual duct cleaning. Is not just a scam to get CC info and such?

Some of that but one said I didn't have to pay until after the job was done.

Sometimes I'm quite pleasant with them. They're paid by the successful call, not hourly. I'm sitting in the kitchen sipping a coffee and watching bread rise. I have nothing else to do but chat.

I'm hearing about these inspection surveys , as people get bolder and want to get the sewer contractor to pay for the basement crack they had for 11 yrs but only leaked last week ......

Part of our contract is for the contractor to go and do condition surveys of properties affected by the work within the zone of influence.

Lots of people say ‘no way you can’t come on’.

My solution is a simply worded letter:

As you have not allowed the contractor to come in and inspect your property we cannot be held liable for any damages due to our activities as we are not aware of current conditions and you won’t be able to prove what’s new or old damage.’

We get permission typically within 24h of sending such a letter to home/business owners.

Another fun fact…the first offer of compensation is typically the highest. The value drops each time an offer is presented as the contract states if the owner doesn’t allow access for monitoring and inspection…you can monitor at the property line.

Gotta hand it to Reliance , you can afford the monthly on a $80K Tesla , but you cant cover the 5K quote for a properly wired up charging station, so you give Reliance ,xx dollars for about , oh forever. Since that chraging station should break down about , never?

And your the next schmo that buys a house with a reliance rented EV station and you dont even own an electric car, but you'll get billed XX a month for your new toy , and taking it out will only cost about 1 grand more than the 5 grand buyout.

And this is why I don't allow Reliance into my house. Sure I can 'save' money and issues, but they are crooks in my opinion and will never get a contract anywhere I live.

And if I buy something with their contract on any item...I'll buy it out at earliest opportunity.

As bad as Reliance and Enercare are there are ones far worse.

Some of the others not only rent the equipment at even more crazy prices they also put a lien on your home day one. It can be a real mess to clear when it is time to sell. These were the typical door to door guys and the ones that are now phoning to "book appointments" to get around the door to door rules.

IME they will send a letter and will not use a corrupt call display.... But in the end these scammers are using the fact that this can occur to their advantage.

We have had multiple inspections from the TTC over the years, also made them pay for some repairs....

Anyone know how call center auto dialers work? Is it better to ignore the call and let it go to voicemail, or to pick up and hang up immediately?
The best method is to play the disconnect triple tone (can be at the beginning of your voicemail). Many of the systems will remove your number thinking it is disconnected, but they also caught on to that one. In addition there is new legislation in place that will force providers to block them but there will still be holes (arms race).

An autodialler will have a delay (until it can get an available scammer) from when you answer to when they connect, many also look for hello so you can try answering in French etc. but that does not always work (low percentage). If you answer and no one responds within a second or so just hang up, but it will not remove your number. If you see call display has been corrupted you can answer and hang up (without saying anything), again will likely not remove your number but will also not waste your time. Better to answer and hangup without saying anything then to send it or let it go to your voicemail (unless voicemail has the triple tone).

If you answer and have a live person wasting their time may save someone else. The autodialler just keeps calling (timed) and if there is no one available someone else will get a call and no person. Maybe you save a rube from being scammed. The offshore ones will typically have a first person and once they think you are a rube they pass the call to a closer. It is unlikely the people you talk to have any control over the dialler so nothing you say or do will remove your number, and there are many multiple of these things running.

If it is a recorded message, hang up right away. I was for a while just leaving the call going to tie up their resources (to save the next person like above) but the system figured I was listening to the messages so I must be a rube, the calls started to come constantly.

Asking if their real name is Ben Chod will get them very angry. Same as asking them if they have to be a scammer because they are a Dalit and no one will give them a legit job. In the end they are scammers that pray on people that cannot afford to lose money. Scamming mostly elderly and people of low intellect, low of fixed income, the scammers deserve no quarter.

There are legit outbound call centres using autodiallers but they are not running microsoft, norton, etc. scams. No point in messing with them, simple no thanks and hang up.
