Is Kijiji a safe place to sell goods any longer?

All this 'smash and grab' talk is making me nervous about showing my bike this afternoon to a potential Kijiji seller...lol...I will update tonight.

Yea, those 250Rs are so damn valuable and rare that scum will resort to beating people up for them!

I've always met at ppl's houses, including my own when selling, but I could see that being a huge safety hazard. When selling parts, however, I don't meet at my house (don't want them to see the bike in case it's a thief scout). When I think about it....I should probably never use my house as a meet location regardless lol Busy parking lot is always best.

Also, I do find it plausible that he works offshore. There are platforms in Newfoundland, etc.

For peace of mind I recommend the following, tell him you can't receive Paypal but what he can do instead is send you an Interac email money transfer using online banking. The limit is $3000 per transfer. This would effectively make it bank account to bank account. He can Paypal his bank account and then do the Interac.

Guy may not know about Interac.

I always do it at my house never had nothing go wrong and if they wanna brake in to steal money from me awesome ill help them to try and find some lol but seriously they can deal with my dog if im not home

If they know you have a dog they'll just bring a steak with poison in it and feed it to the dog. Happened to a buddy of mine that has a scrap metal yard. They fed the two guard dogs the poison and stole whatever they wanted.

What's on your short list? Going right to 600ss, or maybe SV650??

Absolutely no interest in an SS type of bike. Just not my thing, I'm looking for comfort and long distance capability.

In order of preference - with reason as to why / why not...

CB500F - love the look / power of the bike - way too expensive for me at this point in time
CB500X - same as above + more versatility
ER6-N - love the feel of the bike, as well as good size - hard to come by but at top of my used bike list
650R - if I can't find an ER6-N that I want
FZ6R - good reviews - need to take a closer look
Versys 650 - great farkles / capability - too tall for 5'8 with 29" inseam :(

In reality it's coming down to 650R / ER6-N / FZ6R as I can actually sit on these things without too much drama and still feel comfortable.

No no no. This is a common scam, just like the deposed Nigerian prince, and the deceased aunt who willed her fortune to you, etc.

I sold a Honda Rebel in less than 24 hours after I placed the Kijiji ad back in March. Scams are obvious, only a doofus would fall for one.

^ hahaha you said doofus. Classic I say!

Kijiji has stepped up its security measures where now I am completely banned from posting on their site until I verbally speak with them on the phone about one of my posts. All due to writing no lowballers on my ad.

That's an obvious scam...but if anything just take a baseball bat with you, that should deter the smash and grabbers

What? you are going to play a few innings with them? maybe go for sodas later? Bring a bat, they bring a gun.

Tim Bosma was murdered by two or more a-holes after giving them a test ride in his pickup.

A Few rules of selling to Kijidiots...

1. No test rides. Agree in writing to refund cash is there is a major problem within 24 hours, heavily photograph the bike before transfer.
2. In God We Trust, all others pay cash.
3. Show the bike at near your house, but not at your house.
4. Don't bother to answer the "iz it stil fer sail?" emails. you will never hear from them again.
5. Don't deal with people who give you a offer by email without seeing the bike. This is the kiiji equivalent of masturbation.
6. If someone says they are coming to see it, never at night, and have them email you a pic of their drivers licence before they show up.

A "smash and grab" thief can literally pull up beside you at a light and beat you with a bat as well...

I'm having hard time finding actual news stories about GTA "smash and grabs". Forum posts are all, "a guy told me who knows a guy who's girlfriend has a cousin this happened to, two towns over."

Exactly. I'm just saying, just because it happens once, doesn't mean that its going to happen to you. Yes, there is a chance that it could, but getting mugged can happen at any point in time in a public place anyways.

Wearing a $5000 watch? Whats stopping a thief from getting a $5000 piece? It all ends up being sold anyways.

Also...
7. Potential buyer or interested party with a proper email address takes precedent over anybody else.

Scammers use free email addresses because they can set them up quickly, they can choose any name they want, and they are hard to trace... scammers hope that they will not be found or identified.

An email address from a legit ISP such as motorcycle-buyer @rogers.com (just an example) will be faster to track than a hotmail account or an address associated to a new, made up domain.

Don't be shy!!! Ask the buyer to identify himself before he comes over to see the motorcycle. With his full name, look him up in Linkedin, Facebook, etc, find out who he is before you send him your address.

...meanwhile in Canada, is it safe to buy/sell on kijiji

This is just funny, having seen some other parts of the world =)

No offense to anybody ! I live here too lol

it's not about the medium, its about the person, whether this is a person just walking down the street, ebay, kijiji, or other avenue. IMO, cash only, drivers license, proof of insurance, signed document with 100% deposit for test rides, refund will be given upon return. Also take a picture of the bike before the person takes it out, with the other person in the picture, so there are no questions. Should it ever come to a legal issue, it's all about what you can prove, not who said what.
