Is Kijiji a safe place to sell goods any longer?

After reading another post on the forum of the Kijiji "smash and grab" its really making me wonder if it is safe medium to sell anything on. I currently have my bike for sale and received a text message from someone interested in my bike that asked me to email them further details, which I did and received this doozy of a reply back:

Thanks for the swift response and do as well advise on the least amount you will like to give it away as i am buying this for Son and due to the nature of my job and location...i will not be able to come for inspection,am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.

As for the payment..i can only pay via the fastest and secure way to pay online(PayPal) here.I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after the payment have been made ...so no shipping included and With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the courier services company agent so you don't have to worry about that.
You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply. If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to www.paypal.com and sign up its very easy... i would have loved to talk to you on phone but i work mainly offshore, our phone is down on the rig right now due to bad weather, that was why i sent you a text, i even wonder how my message deliver to your phone but for now we can only communicate through the same mailing channel.await your reply asap.

Thanks

Unreal, he works offshore and the phone is down on the rig lol. Do they really think we are that stupid. I am becoming increasingly reluctant to respond to anyone from kijiji as it seems to have become a cesspool of scammers and crooks. It seems that I get one of these responses daily. At this point I would rather trade in my bike whole sale and lose a few $$$ then worry about the legitimacy of any interested parties coming from kijiji.

Thoughts and advice are very welcomed.

Asking if kijiji is safe is like asking if it's safe to go outside when it's cloudy. Sure some people get scammed and sure some people get struck by lightening, but look at the odds.

Tell him you work long hours at the local cesspool. Being a hot summer and all.:p

Dude, google paypal and kijiji for the scam.

Kijiji is as safe as you make it. Everyone got rocked when that dude was killed over his truck (or whatever it was a few months back). Hundreds if not thousands of transactions still happen daily due to kijiji.

Just use your head when dealing.

Like in the above case. dude will pay you with paypal. You receive payment, you give bike and ownership to someone picking it up for him. few days later, paypal pulls the money back cuz it's a stolen card. Then you're SOL.

I sold a Honda Rebel in less than 24 hours after I placed the Kijiji ad back in March. Scams are obvious, only a doofus would fall for one.

Bought/Sold plenty on kijiji.
Be safe about it... public welll-lit place.

People get mugged at the mall too. Is it still safe to shop there?

If you wanna follow through with it I'm game. You bring the shovel I'll bring the baseball bat.

Gents I agree that the sky is not falling on kijiji, the email scam is obvious and agree you need to be a moron to fall for that. I have never had to have back up while selling a bike or car on kijiji in the past. Looks like I will have to bring some "muscle" with for the transaction.

At the risk of sounding like an *******, I think only idiots get scammed on those sites.

I've bought and sold a ton of things and have never had an incident. Car, bike, televisions, cellphones, I even got my dog from craigslist.

Just never give out your address and never meet someone in a secluded area. How hard is that? It would be pretty brazen for someone to rob me in broad daylight in the gas station at Yonge and Sheppard..

I have never sold anything without receiving cash. The same way I have never bought anything without giving the person cash.

If you didn't already notice that is a scam, they use credit card fraud and get your bike. They send that same email to everyone on kijiji selling a vehicle so just ignore it.

That's an obvious scam...but if anything just take a baseball bat with you, that should deter the smash and grabbers

bought and sold all of my bikes through kijiji no problems. I would advise to meet elsewhere beside your house for oblivious reasons

Do all your big transactions by a police station, or in the parking lot and say you're off duty at the moment.

Of course Kijiji is safe... I sell stuff on there all the time.

Just be smart... don't fall for obvious scams.

It's mostly normal people. 98% fine nice people looking for cheap ****.

this is not real... what an obvious scam. It literally could not be more obvious. How it's written, wanting to do this paypal thing. Seriously. lol @ this for real. With all due respect maybe don't use Kijiji or Ebay, you are very vulnerable.

People get carjacked at red lights, does that mean we shouldn't stop in fear of being carjacked?

**** happens, just do what you can to deter thieves from targetting you.

A "smash and grab" thief can literally pull up beside you at a light and beat you with a bat as well...

All this 'smash and grab' talk is making me nervous about showing my bike this afternoon to a potential Kijiji seller...lol...I will update tonight.
