Inflation

Going further into this I can walk to a convenience store for milk, white bread and canned spaghetti in 12 minutes.

A Metro is twice as far to walk, 21 minutes. Driving is about 5 minutes

Public transit is 9 to 16 minutes depending on how I time the buses. The 16 minute option means I end up walking half the distance to get the more efficient (Time wise) bus that takes the scenic route.

Home Depot is an hour walk instead of the 11 minute walk to where there used to be a hardware store.

McD's or the independent pharmacy is 8 minutes walking, between 5 and 35 minutes transit, depending on bus timing (half hour between buses), 3 minutes by car plus the lineup for the burgers.

A big part of shifting to public transit will be training people to know and adjust to the schedules. Two people could simultaneously leave a bar for homes the same distance away. One is home in 15 minutes, the other an hour and a half.

Re crime, how may people want to leave their car in an unguarded Go Parking Lot until closing time, hoping for the best.

Strangely enough, I can get milk and vegetables with a 5 minute walk. Full grocery store, Hardware store or restaurant, forget about it, they need wheels to get to. No public transit available at all.

My mother lived in Anten Mills, north of Barrie. She continued to live there for years after my step father died and she didn't drive. Good neighbours and a big freezer kept her going. She could be ready to go in two minutes if a neighbour called offering her a ride somewhere. She went to Florida in the winter.

The local general store seems to have closed a half dozen years ago

IIRC, she could probably walk to fry guy (who may or may not be closing) but that's about it now. Car dependent. No public transportation available.

I wonder if online groceries would service the area if she was still there and at what cost. She hated computers though.

My wife noticed a phone booth, something I haven't sought out for years. It's fifty cents a call now.
Last time I was home all the phone booths got turned into free wifi Hotspots. I was pleasantly surprised telstra (Aus version of Bhell) actually did that.

That's a cool idea. There's at least one organization in the US setting up old pay phones using voip as free phones. Part of their model has volunteer operators available to talk. That is a nice feature for people that may not have anyone to call but feel lonely. I think they fundraise about $1000/year/phone to keep it running.

Recession? What recession? BoC just bumped another 0.25% in their rate...it took MCAP a total of 1.5hrs to send me notification about my payments increasing...

Economy keeps on going brrrrrr....

That's not good.

According to Stats Can, CPI increases were largely fuelled by increases in mortgage financing costs, rents, and gasoline tax increases -- all of which were increased directly & indirectly by the Liberal party.

So, to fight inflation, do they think the cure is to further increase financing costs and gas taxes?

One foot on the brake, 2 feet on the gas.

Ipsos says 1/2 of Canadians now want a 2023 Federal Election.

So then it will keep going up...no different than in Poland.

'Inflation is super high! Let's raise rates'

Rates go up to 12% and inflation is (shockingly) still rampant!

Honestly it's tough NOT to get caught up in the conspiracy theories where the gov't is out to just Eff all of us that aren't rich. Because this path isn't working...not for the working class anyway.

Don't worry. They're going to build crappy affordable housing and make sure everyone ends up needing it.

Variable mortgages are for gamblers . Lock in at a payment you can afford and have 5 yrs of sleep .

Well.. when i see our country leaders in north america, it's kinda hard to believe that they're the Champions chosen by the people to make the decisions for us.
A senile old man who's been in politics forever and the drama teaching son of a previous political leader.

 It's just kinda hard to believe that out of 330 million and 35+ million people, these were the best options.

They clearly aren't the best option. However, the democratic system is designed to elect the most popular idiot not the pragmatist.

They’re not the best…they’re the most popular and most influential to get the backing of their respective parties.

This is nothing more than being King and Queen of the Senior Prom in high school. Popularity wins.

At this point it really does not matter who is elected, kind of like changing the captain mid-way through the Titanic sinking.
