Increase Ontario 400-series Highway Speed Limit

horizon, it is NOT about getting anywhere faster! It is about legalizing speed of 120-140 which we currently drive at. We simply want to drive 'peacefully' at such speeds and not have to watch the shoulders. I am sure you are included (you said 130-140) - you should support us then - this case is PRECISELY for people like you!

Right now, EVERYONE is criminalized. I know the cops don't ticket for 120 or less (so what? what if OPP chief changes that practice tomorrow - he has a full LEGAL right to do so!) - but that should be the case of 135 or less if such speeds currently produce good safety stats for our roads. This is the whole claim (nobody says we want to drive at 160 to get anywhere faster).

But I could not disagree with you more about automated vehicles. I, on the contrary, enjoy driving a LOT and hope to be dead when that day comes. And when it comes (and I'm still alive), I'd rather chose a teleport which will take my molecules to another place rather than lock me up in an automated vehicle.

Speeding isn't a criminal offence.

Wow. You are not prepared for this to go anywhere. If that's you're argument you'd get eaten alive if it ever got past a Facebook petition.

Ya your right fastar1...can't argue with that...maybe better still they should lower the speed limit, that is if you have any arguments? It would be safer... say 80?

If the fine structure doesn't change then the speed limit could be 0 for all the difference it would make.

Don't know what you are talking about but fastar's point is that it doesn't matter what the signs say. the speed limit currently being enforced by the cops isn't lower than 120, so increasing the limit to 120 would be pretty much pointless.

Most cops will agree that 120 is safe (even 125, I spoke to a few). In such case not pulling someone over SHOULD NOT be a cop's discretion or goodwill - it should be a law (like in many other places). Not sure how you could argue against that.

I don't follow, why? Petitioning to legalize current safe driving at 120-130 would not get us anywhere? Especially is such speeds are approved world-wide?

Its a waste of time, kind of like the U.S. congress affirming the motto of the United States. Completely pointless and the next day, nothing changes.

Because you come off as someone who is a chronic speeder who is sick of getting tickets. You're pitching a problem that 99% of people don't have. I use 400 series everyday and the police are not a problem for me. As HorizonXP said, you need to angle this so that it benefits people and politicians. My feeling on all of your posts are 'if it ain't broke....'. Quite frankly, You won't get much support from people just so you don't get as many tickets

Have you actually done the math and compared how much time you save by speeding? Consider how much more fuel you burn to get somewhere only 10 minutes earlier over a couple hour long trip and risk getting a ticket really isn't worth it.

I cruise between 110-120, depending on traffic. Hardly ever go any faster, and I get places just as fast as when I used to drive faster. Now I just sit back, stay out of the left lane and watch all you idiots doing 140 zig-zag through traffic.

I do think that with the attitudes of the typical BMW drivers and SUV soccer moms in the GTA that if the limit was 120 they would just go even faster, and they really don't need to be putting people at more of a risk.

Seeing a lot of skeptics on this forum (to my great amazement, I must say - I though bikers were much more about speed - legal speed - but oh well), I would like to ask you all an ultimate question.

After reading the site at www.stop100.ca, if you chose NOT to support it, what if - hypothetically speaking - the government legalized this scenario:
120-130km/h on Express lanes and 100km/h on collectors (with the same safety record as we know from current MTO data and countries world-wide)

I presume all you bikers would stay in 100, eh? I didn't think so. So let's stop the hypocrisy - go and support it! (kool is excepted, he gets it...)

Nope, no single ticket for me (in many years) - wrong assumption. Safe and attentive driving with proper lane courtesy is what I really promote. But our speed limit used to be higher so WHY would it be lower now?

As I indicated before, no one here who actually rides fast takes their speed onto a 400 series highway. The kids from YorkU that ride the 250s do though, you might want to go there if you want more support.

hypothetically if you grew a brain, people might support you too, but like your speed limit proposal, it isn't going to happen. Because if you actually read the posts in the thread, you would realize that that if the speed limit was raised to 120, the speed limit to me would instantly become 169 ( and the same for bascially everyone else out there)

You have provided no 'safety record' data what-so-ever. And in your hypothetical situation, the collectors would simply move at the same speed as the express. It still wouldn't work

PS. my onion has 10 likes in the past hour........you're going down!!

I wouldn't change my current habit of taking the collectors or express lanes depending on which one has less congestion, because a 100 or 120 limit makes no difference.

By the way, another tip if you want to be taken seriously is to decide whether you want to see a 120 or 130 limit. Can't have both at the same time.

hey imagine if they made possession of marijuana under 5 grams legal?

oh wait that wouldn't make a difference at all either.

What about if they made it legal to jaywalk?

damn same thing.

You're not world wide...you are in Ontario.

With this closed-minded comment, I shall close... Apparently no biker ever does 130-140 with the flow of the traffic - or if they do, they think it is legal. Well horizon is the biggest hypocrite who admits to doing 130-140 but claims 100 limit is fine - must be getting a tonne of adrenaline from seriously braking the law (on the verge of impoundment) and wanting to keep it that way. Beats me, I rest my case with this group.... adios my friends...

In case you come to your senses and open your minds to what legal limits are set around the world and how people drive (LEGALLY), it may not be too late: www.stop100.ca. Until then, I suggest staying below 120 as most cops will pull you over for a hair faster than that. I hope they don't reduce the ticket for you either for your stance on the topic.

I took the liberty of highlighting everything you said that is wrong.

Don't let the door hit your *** on the way out.

I'll keep you posted with how my onion does. It's picking up steam......should be a good race!!!

Lol...how's your math? What's 130 kmh in mph? Now tell me how many countries have that limit? Hmm..having problems? What about 120 kmh?

Almost forgot - wanting to results to be very unbiased (yes, you've read right - I want a true, honest public opinion), please take the poll at the bottom of www.stop100.ca

Two options: 100 vs 120-130.

Make sure you pick 100 to come to terms with your conscience.

I appreciate kool and everyone else who was open to supporting the subject. You're helping to abolish hypocrisy in which other bikers clearly prefer to remain in. Thanks again.
