Increase Ontario 400-series Highway Speed Limit

Well, the reasonable among us knew thats what would happen =D

After working in the insurance world for as long as I have. I can side with your point of view.
A part of me secretly wished it would be reviewed. Nova Scotia limits are 110km/h however; they're roads are strictly enforced by the OPP. Anything over 110km/h and they pull you over

Here in Ontario we have created a society that going over the limit 10km/h on most roads and 19km/h over is acceptable.

I don't think that the OPP has jurisdiction in Nova Scotia lol. (sorry, just being a ****)

Ive actually come to enjoy messing with people on the roads here. I do the speed limit in the car EVERYWHERE I go (old habit from back home where there is a cop with a lydar around every corner). I usually sit in the right lane unless my turn is coming up etc. but I still get people come flying up and tailgating me.

I dont know what most peoples reactions are (im guessing its to speed up) but my first reaction is to slow down and watch the persons face as they get really ****** in my mirror. I then find a car in the left lane that is doing the speed limit and slot in beside them. I drive like this until the other car makes a turn etc then watch the person behind me quickly merge left (usually without indicating) and overtake me. As they are going past they turn to look at me, probably to try and abuse me but as soon as they see me looking at them they turn their heads forward and speed off at well over the limit.

Why is everyone is such a hurry here? I have an idea, wake the f#@k up OR leave the house 10-20 mins earlier and you wont have to endanger peoples lives on the roads to get where your going on time. The speed limits are there for a reason.

So you enjoy deliberately agitating people? You are part of the problem. Life's too short for such things.

Keeping up with the current flow of traffic on the 400 series outside the GTA means going 120kph-130kph, trust me I do it everyday for 400-500kms. Who's being endangered??? Our speed limits used to be 70mph, they were dropped for economic reasons.

If we want to make our roads safer, the police should get out from their fishing spots and start on-road presence with marked cars. Ticket people who tailgate, who don't signal, who don't move over from the left lane etc.

We should also make getting and maintaining a driver's license a whole lot harder. Driving should require a certain amount of skill...currently you just have to show up.

120 is fine in rural areas. Windsor/London, Brockville/Cornwall corridors for example. No where near the traffic density of GTA, which you seem to be using to apply the same blanket statement.

Again, proper driving techniques are the key. Personally I would like to see dynamic speed limits. Having a speed sign change it's led's from 100 to 120 on a sunny day with light traffic would be ideal. Driver education needs to be addressed first though.

Aren't those areas already leading the accident stats? Would raising the speed limit reduce the number of accidents?
Having been around and driving when the speed limit on divided highways was 70mph, I can tell you that most would drive at 80mph. At that time, 11mph over was 3 points, most would drive 10 over and not get ticketed. Raising the limit will only result in drivers going the normal 15 to 20 over the posted limit. Wouldn't matter if the limit was 200, they would still go faster. Human nature to be competitive.

Im somewhat with that guy. I really pisses me off when people are aggressive tailgaters in residential areas. I enjoy slowing down below the limit and agitating them. Get off my tail. People that almost rear end me at STOP all way because they don't expect me to stop receive the extended stop treatment. People need to relax. Oh and bikers that gun it on resie streets... wtf? I get it you don't ride much... you have to make the most out of your timmies ride.

Maybe i'm bitter but this year alone I saw three accidents which included a car flipped over on my 50KM/h street.

I dunno..I understand your point..but..I was going up Hwy 11 north of Gravenhurst..100kmh limit..and somebody in a Honda Fit decided to drive 95kmh..exactly the same speed as the car beside her..for about 5kms..I was waiting patiently..not tail-gating..I'm not really in that big a hurry..but it's 100kmh limit. So after a while I flash my hi-beams twice..very quickly..to say, I'd like to pass.. So, she starts waving and giving me the finger. Like, seriously? Finally buddy in the right lane signals to get off the highway..and he's slowing down to turn..and she's slowing down to like 50kmh as well.. So he turns off and I wait to see if she's going to move over..nope..alright, I hate passing on the right..but..under the circumstances, so I start to pass on the right and she's accelerating to over 120kmh. That's a dangerous game she's playing..

A couple points...

1. Don't assume that people that are driving over the limit are doing so because they're "late", or "in a rush".
2. Don't assume that all "speeding" is endangering people's lives.
3. Don't expect us "speeders" to stop driving like ***holes if you're still driving like one. You don't have to speed, just be considerate and share the road.

It's also clearly defined as racing, under HTA 172.

Observation from a place where there aren't speed limits in some areas and where there are speed limits, they're mostly reasonable (i.e. higher), suggests otherwise.

People will go a speed that they are comfortable with. Most traffic on German autobahns is moving 120 - 140 km/h on the unrestricted sections - little different from here.

Most of the accidents out this way are due in part to weather conditions. Turbo likes to point out that the dead straight portion of the 401 near Chatham is very prone to accidents however the cause of them is usually weather (fog, snow, etc). If someone is too stupid to drive according to conditions then the actual numeric value of the speed limit doesn't really even matter.

People drive 120-130 because that's the unofficial speed limit. If the limit were raised to 115 or 120 and actually enforced then I doubt there would be much change at all. The only difference would be for those that like to drive 130+. For them their speeding tickets would more closely reflect what they were doing. 140 is really only 20 over, in all fairness.

I'm sure there are some that may stick the '15 over' mentality and speed up if given the opportunity but once they realize they are spending $50 more on gas per week they would probably slow down.

Just to let you know, the "unofficial" speed limit in the Chatham-Windsor corridor is closer to 110km/h - 115km/h.

There was a point in time when accidents in that section of the 401 were occurring despite good weather conditions. That section of road is flat, straight, boring and windy.

It also did not have paved shoulders or rumble strips. Those have since been added and have helped.

Tell that to the entire USA, where everyone goes not even 1 mm/year faster than the speed limit like it's child rape to do otherwise. Appropriate speed limits will make it such that people don't go in excess of them, and Natural Selection will take care of the remainder anyway.

Yes, it's revenue collection. A number of credible independent studies show that the proper highway speed is somewhere around 120-130km/h which is where a) the brain is fully engaged and b) congestion is considerably lessened.

Congestion causes accidents. Rate of speed difference is a factor in fatalities. Both are related, but not in the way your cash-hungry, control-happy government would like you to think.

I am *for* a 100km/h limit during snow conditions. But on a warm summer day, it's ludicrous. And dangerous.
