Increase Ontario 400-series Highway Speed Limit

Their society is different, their laws are different. The countries and overall dynamics are different. Their gas prices their towns.
We cannot compare ourselves to them.

So still failing to see why we are bothering with that nonsense.

Don't mean to be rude...but I've been there many times. Yes of course there are differences but not many concerning getting in a car and driving on the roads. They should be going slower their gas prices are OUCH!
Yes we can compare...they can drive civilized and so can we.
The problem with Police controlled laws we never know when they will change them to suit their mood.

That might be the case, if police actually controlled the laws.

Dont worry I do not find you rude. We are debating.

I lived there. Was born there and while I can no longer speak it, German was my first language.

Different legal system, different laws. Different cultural makeup of the people, different beliefs.
Worked with a german woman for a year who had just moved here. She and I used to go over the differences. She was downright speechless about some of the different beliefs and laws here.

The two countries are too different to use them as justification to increase our speed limit on the 400 series.

I beg to differ in the actual driving around and on hwys. The cars are the same really...they drive on the same side as we. The rules of the road are very similar. They aren't allowed to pass on the right....passing on the left is the perferred method and then returning to the middle lane. I think we can accomplish this without much trouble. We could encourage better drivers by having experienced driving courses that will lower insurance rates if passed. Not mandatory.
I spent much time around 100km south of Frankfurt Speyer/Hockenheim area travel mostly the south. Living there is awesome what area were you from?
Germans are less tolerant than we are I'll say that...lol.

See theres one example how we differ, specially in Ontario, while the law says to move over, many people dont. And people dont see the middle lane as the main lane. You see the lanes in terms of speed in relation to the limit.
Still the demographics are different. Terrain different etc etc.

Lahr in Baden-Wurttemberg. My dad was posted to CFB Lahr but they lived off base.

Wow... were neighbours just a wee bit more south. Been to Strasbourg, just a hop skip and jump to Paris...love Paris...now they have different traffic issues than us...lol.

The USA is a more realistic comparison to our driving rules than Germany, perhaps you should use them as a reference instead. Canada, unlike Germany, does not have signage for priority roads, traffic cameras in the 30kmh zones, a "no trucks after midnight" law on the major highways and other interesting laws. And before you ask, yes, I lived there. From '82-'86, with visits back there every 3-4yrs to visit my younger brother, who has lived there since '85.

It translates to more police TRAVELING on the roads, instead of sitting in speed traps. You don't see idiots like the ones in my "Jackassery" videos, by sitting in your little fishing hole.

I also think there should be far more unmarked cars.

If people are aware of a police car nearby then they'll behave. The amount of stupid things I see every day when no police cars are around..... yeesh.

With the current relatively large number of unmarked cars, how do you know that there aren't any around?

I disagree with that and am not a fan of unmarked, and 'ghost' cars. If the very presence of a marked police vehicle creates better driving behaviour then, to quote Martha Stewart, it's a good thing. If a motorist needs to find a police officer, then he can.

If the intent is to improve driver behaviour and sanction the bad, rather than generate revenue, then cars should be marked.

no trucks after midnight" law on the major highways

They should have that here, except change it to rush hour. Too many of those idiots insist on taking up 2 of the available 3 lanes so they can pass each other at 40 kmh.

Germany was used as a "what can be done" eg higher speed limt and more rule following. Not USA as "who is like us" And congrats on your lineage. Therefore you might be able to see what they do in Germany to a lesser extent we could do here. eg. passing rules and legalize speed limit to appropriate 120 km hr. Love their signage...lots of warning and updates as to where you are and could be going...at least my experience. Not unlike here racing over 5 lanes to try to get the turn off...lol.

And congrats on your lineage.

I'm not German and neither is my brother. I was stationed there when I was in the military.

Lahr also? I am not German also as I have Canadian parents. Was born there in 85.

Canadian also...ex-wife German born and raised.

I think we had this conversation before but, yes, I was in Lahr. You were still crapping in your diapers when I left in '86. ;)

Congratulations...my old radio station in Ottawa KISS FM just mentioned you and your website on their facebook page.

"Ontario transportation ministry spokesman Bob Nichols said the province currently has no interest in changing speed limits."

Banning SUV and Minivans would surely free up traffic. Most who buy them don't know **** about driving.

Just saw a quick 45 second bit on CP24. It's made it to the news, but the bottom tagline was "not considering increase to speed limits at this time"

Their campaign has gotten more publicity than I thought it would...Then again I never though a 16 yr old Brampton's racist rant on YouTube would make the Toronto Star either.
