Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

Thanks, also how would I be able to ride it back from the US. Does Chicago have a temporary plate or do I need one from toronto.

Short answer is you won't

Oh.... Anyone planning to buy a bike near chicago?? We can split the cost.
I was also considering Uship.com

If you were considering riding the bike, why don't you consider renting a van and going to pick up a bike? Or if you have SUV, rent a Uhaul bike trailer for 20 bucks a day.

Rented Uhaul motorcycle trailer when brought mine over.
$27 with insurance. Nice trailer too.

I don't own a car, and under 25.. So I can't rent a vehicle either.

Get some Uship quotes, or I know Enterprise will rent to you but you pay a surcharge for being under 25.

You most likely will need a friend to pick up and tie down that bike. Any 25+ friends who can rent that trailer/van for you?? Otherwise, getting it shipped is your only option, but that will be expensive. IMHO, you might as well look for a bike locally.

You may have to ask on Yamaha forums, or at least make a separate thread. It's a really one of a kind bike - it's old with tons of changes and upgrades, so IMHO the price on this bike will be really subjective. Not my kind of bike at all.

True. Those kinds of bikes sell for whatever it's worth to the buyer ultimately. Don't expect the owner to come down far at all.

Lets keep this thread on topic about importing bikes, not about the value of some unique bike.
Theres already 1093 postings for someone trying to get info about importing a bike to read thru.
It's far easier to rent a trailer and go down and get your bike, just find a parent, an uncle or a freind that will help you out.

They do in fact charge you tax. The only way around that is to have the current owner get you a temporary tag. If you're buying from a dealer, I'm not sure if they would or not.

I got my bike in Florida and should have paid taxes, but got super lucky when the girl at the counter suggested we get a temp tag in the current owners name, he was fine with it and it only cost me $12 in total if remember correctly. I rode the bike back home over the 3 days, so you'll be fine driving a car back. I've also heard of people of taking their ONT plates with them and sticking them on their newly purchased vehicle in the states and driving it back home. Of course you take your chances with that one as it's certainly not legal, at least not here. Not advocating that you do that, simply saying that some have done it.

You would need to bring proof of insurance with you into the states. Your insurance co here will need the VIN, make, model and year and value of the vehicle you're purchasing in order to give you insurance. At least that's what mine asked for.

Good luck with the purchase.
Refer to pg38
Thanks again, I decided not to buy since it would cost almost the same here.

Definitely worth it for some bikes but not others, also depends on which state you get it from, some you have to pay tax in, others you don't. Trailering it seems to be the easiest way around having to register it where you bought it. I looked at the states for my 07 V-Strom, but it was just not worth it, bought one here instead for the same $. My ST1300, I saved a good chunk of change by buying US.

Do the research and math and decide if it's worth it for you.

Planning to drive down to NJ next weekend to pick up a 2013 ZX6R, and have a few questions. This thread is too long to read through all 55 pages, so Im sorry if it has been answered already...

Since I am buying the bike brand new, does that mean I have to pay 13% tax on it when I go to register it here? Or is it still 8% like when you register a used bike?

It says on the first page 1 "Present your vehicle along with original title docs to US Customs prior (72 hours) to entering Canada". So does that mean I leave the bike at the boarder for 72 hours? Then I have to go back after that time period to pick it up? I am going to leave a deposit on my credit card, and pay the rest in cash when I pick up the bike. So I will not have the title until I pick up the bike

And lastly besides the RIV fee, is there any other costs at the boarder?

Appreciate it, just trying to get an idea of how much its going to cost and how the 72 hour thing works....I have only imported bikes that were already in Canada through RIV, but not imported yet....

You can get the dealer to fax a copy of the ownership to US Customs at which ever crossing you're using 72 hrs in advance. Keep the fax confirmation. You won't need to leave the bike with them.

Tax is 13%. I cant remember if you pay at the border or when you register the bike.

No other fees at the border.

Are you sure a copy is good enough? On the first page it says "original"....Also it says present the vehicle and docs. So you can present the docs(copy) 72 hours prior, and still show up with the bike later and drive through with it as long as they have the docs 72 hours prior?

13% aint bad, the price of the bike is good enough to still make it worth the road trip...
