Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

thanks dude .. if i can't get the sales tax back I won't buy it... price will be too high... is there a link where its sais motorcycle even made in japan for US don't need to pay duty ? I search for 3 hours and couldn't find anything...

The motorcycle can be made anywhere...but as long as it is for US use....then you don't need to pay any duty...(I'm pretty sure my Kawi was made in Japan)

As for the sale tax...I know Mich, charges the sales tax...just go over to PA or NY, NC to pick up the bike.

FYI people in regards to Duty:

Duty is not normally collected at the landborders because officers are too lazy to change the code from US manufactured goods and as a courtesy (let's face it no one likes to pay more and most officers try to help a person out where they can). That being said Duty can be collected on goods and when one is planning to import you should calculate the full price including Duty just incase when decideding if a purchase is worth it.

I just called the Alexandria Bay ( Gananoque) border crossing and they told me that they will not accept a faxed copy of the origina ltitle it must be the original title mailed to them.
They were specific that it must be mailed to them,NOT a faxed copy.

anyone know anything about this?

Possibly because when you copy a US title the word VOID appears all over the document. Tried to copy one from indana and you couldn't read anything throut the voids that pop up

If I want to purchase a "salvage" title bike in Tenn. what duties and or taxes will I have to pay, and what other expenses will I have to incurr at the border. This bike is a track bike only and will remain a salvage title bike!

Does anyone know of a reputable company that will pick up a bike in the states and bring it back to Canada, will there be more hassles doing it this way? Do I need to be at the border?

Thanks in advance

You can import it as a parts bike only with a form 3 which is free, and you skip the whole RIV thing. But it will turn into an irrapairable Ontario ownership, it wont stay salvage..You will still pay tax on your declaired value

Can anyone recommend a good kawasaki dealer in the states? Looking at importing a 2009 zx6r, as some places have advertised for around 6999. Is this a good deal?

Just to clarify, do I need the recall letter at the border, or only for the service required in Canada?

What you need at the border is

recall letter
bill of sale
tittle of the vehicle (ownership)

NOTE:

Regardless of the origin of the motorcycle, ie. Japan......there is no duty upon importation.....only 5% GST.

BUT for cars...... If made outside of north america - attracts 6.1% duty

What are the rules for competition karts? I want to import an over 15 year old kart complete with motor. Does it need any documentation beyond the Bill of Sale? Can it be imported as a "parts vehicle" per Form 3 if I remove the motor (easy to do)?
Does MTO / RIV have any interest in off road / competition / show vehicles such as karts?

I have successfully imported a vehicle previously from N.J. under RIV. One additional document that some may need is a Release (original of course) from any Leasing or Loan entity that had title. Thanks.

I am unsure on what is required. My guess would be since it is not for use on the road RIV would not be interested and the cart would come in like regular goods only requiring a bill of sale and any Duty and Taxes owed being paid at the border upon entry. Your best bet to have this question answered correctly is to call the numbers for CBSA in your local white pages of your phonebook.

To 08CBR 1000 for shipping a bike within the States I recommend UShip at www.uship.com who are a center for various independant carriers who specialize in vehicles such as motorcycles, ATV's, snowmobiles, karts (they took my racekart from Kansas City to Detroit area for $230) and like vehicles etc. Their service and communication are excellent. The drawback is their arrival time is not nailed down as the carrier works his/her way to their 'final' destination, picking up and dropping as space permits. But it's reasonable! And, their care level is excellent. I suggest you would have them drop at say Niagara Falls. N.Y. CBI on Cudaback Ave. are great for accepting and holding. Then you pick up and do the paperwork etc. Best check with CBI first that they have space.

Gents, has anyone been able to get a clearance letter from Triumph? Last year I imported an 07 R6 and found that asking Yamaha Canada for one was much easier than US as they emailed me a letter within 24hours, while the US guys said 4 weeks.

Looking for any tips on the best place/way to get a clearance letter from Triumph.

Cheers

hey everyone im looking at bringing a 93 harley fatboy accross the border. Now i need to know if it is a must that the guage be changed to km or will i get away with just leaving it the way it is? Or does it depend on whos looking it over ? and advice would be great since its my first time bringing a vehicle over. Thanks !

If importing a bike older than 15 yrs, do you still need to provide the recall clearance letter, even though the vehicle is RIV exempt?

This is for 04deveni, go here http://www.triumph.co.uk/usa/Recall_and_Tech_Update_VIN_Enquiry.aspx
put in the VIN # for your triumph, print it and use that for RIV. As long as theres no safety or other recalls you should be good to go.
