Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

IC...so pretty much spend 15 dollars to ride 10 days? and wait for the damn FORM 2??

I will probably just go in person during lunch to get that FORM 2 FASTER! :)

I got my form 2 in my email in less than a week.

I've searched the thread, and aside from someone having taken a bike with them when they immigrated, was unable to find information regarding importing from Europe. I'm planning on going to Germany in a year, and living there for a year while going to school.

I don't want to go a year without riding, so I'm planning on getting a bike there. I figure if I get one, if it's not too much trouble, I'd like to import it after my year is up.

Is my best choice to find one older than 15 years and importing it using the exemption, or is there any way to bring it over if its a newer bike?

Thanks in advance.

Cannot import and register it for use here unless it is more than 15 years old.

Thanks for the quick reply. At least by the time I go, I can get '96 bikes.

Question about Duties,

I know we don't need to pay duties anything made in NA/Mexico correct?

Based on the VIN...

The Zx6r VIN starts with J (Japan I guess....)

So I would assume Duty might be needed? so another 5%? or how much?

You pay 0 duty on any bike that is made for the US market.

My bike, made in Italy, but for the US market, no duty... there are no duties on bikes.

Just finished the import process today, went to CTC got the RIV inspection and safety done (took them about 30 minutes to do both), then went to the MTO paid my PST, got a new plate and ownership so now she's all legal like! :D

I am looking at buying a bike in Michigan. The seller is offering to ride the bike across the border and sell it to me in canada. Is this possible? Easier/harder then doing the deal in the us?

Thanks in advance

NO

YOU still have to import it, and if the bike is already here you may run into issues when you have to go back to US customs to export it... Him riding it into Canada probably makes for more hassle than for you to go down there and ride it back. It certainly doesn't make it any easier for you.

That's what a I thought. Thanks.

Hey, just curious where you now pay the taxes with the change to HST? At CDN side of the border or the MTO?

I love this thread btw. Thanks for all the really helpful tips. I'm planning on picking up a used Honda ST1300 in the states in the next couple of weeks. Thanks to this thread and many awesome contributions it's made the process much clearer.

Also someone mentioned that you have to pay taxes when purchasing in Michigan, does this apply to private sales anyone know?

Probably the CBSA or the MTO can both answer the tax question with a quick phone call.

How about a bike that no longer has it's orginal gauge cluster? It has been replaced with a veypour digital dash. As long as it displays mph/kmh will it pass riv inpsection?

Thanks for all the help so far

I'm pretty sure the Mech at CT has no idea if it is an orginal gauge or not...just as long it displays kmh/mph

Make sure it is set to Kms before you take it in.

Anyone know which states you do have to pay tax in at the time of the purchase? MI seems to be a for sure, NY is a no. Anyone know about Ohio? Would this only be available from each states DMV or is there a site that has the info?

Thanks.
