Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

You pay 0 duty on any bike that is made for the US market.

My bike, made in Italy, but for the US market, no duty... there are no duties on bikes.

Just finished the import process today, went to CTC got the RIV inspection and safety done (took them about 30 minutes to do both), then went to the MTO paid my PST, got a new plate and ownership so now she's all legal like! :D

how did you get the bike to CTC to get the RIV inspection?
right now im stuck as mto says i need the bike towed to CTC.

I got form 1 and 2

My trip permit from Oregon was still valid and MTO said it was legal to ride it that way.

Hop on it and ride it.. if you are worried, borrow a plate and don't ride stupid...

(if you choose to do so thats your problem)

Legally you can't ride it if they won't give you a permit, probably not...

One of the guys on here such as infernobuster who offers towing services might also do it for cheap if its not too far.

Anyone know of a good US dealer that has a new oldstock (08/09/10) CBR1000 available? I recall a few people on here bringing one up and I'm looking for a dealer OK with selling/shipping one up.

So I just imported (maybe importING is more accurate since I just got home with the bike today) a 2006 Honda ST1300 from Florida. I think I got away super lucky when we went to change over the title, from the seller to me at the DMV - I was fully expecting to pay FL taxes on the bike when the wonderful lady behind the counter suggested I get a Demo Permit in the sellers name since I won't be registering the bike there, good for 30 days at a cost of $12 if I remember correctly. Saved me a good chunk of change :D she did.

Came up through Detroit, only because of the timing. Everything went really well, US side was about 30 min total, only because I had to wait after I gave the title and my Passport to the guy at counter, he asked some simple questions and in the end stamped the title and sent me on my merry way.

To get there, I came in on West Fort St. Turned left at the gate that no one seemed to be manning, appears to be around 22nd St - although this is not marked anywhere, I think the address was posted though. The gate magically opened itself to let me in (for a second there I thought of Hotel California when riding through). Parking lot on the right, go between the 2 buildings, last doors on the right. Getting out was about as easy. Just followed the direction provided by the customs guy. I read directions on how to enter here http://www.car4sale.ca/import/import_to_canada.html but did not follow them as after looking at the satellite map of the area, it seemed to make more sense to get off 75 earlier and just take W Fort st all the way down. This proved much easier as far as I'm concerned.

In Canada, everything went well inside, paid only 5% there, was expecting to pay all 13%. Apparently this is the only place that still separates the HST for some reason. They also logged into the RIV website for me and set me up there, even plugged in my visa card # and paid for it right there and then.

Was then given the little yellow slip and told to give it to one of the customs agents outside and I could go. This is where my only trouble (so far) started. I do have to say that one of the agents outside was super nice and helped me find my date of manufacture and VIN sticker (I had no idea where it was on the bike). So I give the yellow slip to the female agent and she starts asking me some questions about the bike. Basically attempting to validate how much I paid for the bike, seemingly the bill of sale was not sufficient. This took I'm guessing about 30 min of her going inside on the computer, coming out and asking some more questions, rinse and repeat. In the end, all was well and I was on my way home.

I rode the bike all the way from Florida, through Tail of the Dragon - this was something else I have to say. I can not wait to go back and do it again. If you've ever thought about going down to Deals Gap, just do it. The coolest experience on 2 wheels for me yet!

Overall I have to say, the experience has been not too bad. Still have to get a safety done and the CT thing once my email from RIV comes in. In the meantime, I'll keep riding on the 30 day permit. I don't expect any problems, but will feel better once my own ONT plate is attached to the bike.

I would certainly recommend this process to anyone who is interested in saving a bunch of money for very little overall hassle.

Also have to add that it helps to have a great seller. The person I bought from was absolutely fantastic, picking me up at the airport, basically working with me throughout the entire process. Super nice guy.

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of importing a used car from the states and just have a quick question.

All the online guides tell me you have to fax in the Ownership/Title to the border 72hrs before arriving.

I'm assuming I have to have signed the ownership before faxing it. So does that mean I'll have to buy the car, fax the ownership, AND wait 3 days in the states before going to the border?

That seems very inconvinient to me, especially since the drive one way is 5hrs away.

I don't feel safe making the full payment for the car before seeing it, or going to the dealership/person I'm buying it from. So my real question is, can the dealer just fax the ownership to the border 3 days before I buy the car? IE: before I have signed it?

Thanks!

You don't need a signed ownership, just get the dealer to fax you the title. Then you fax it to Customs, Take note of the confirmation number when you fax it. You'll need this when you call to check and see if Customs received your fax in a few days.

Hey guys,

Okay, so the importing process is underway. I've faxed all the required documents to the US Border at Lewiston.

And have left a message on their answering machine to call me back with confirmation. I also have written instructions on the fax cover page to call me back.

Is all I can do is wait for them to call? or is there another landline I'm not seeing.

Thanks!

Just an opinion here but I don't think you'll be getting a confirmation call from them. I imported through Detroit a month ago and all I did was fax them and kept the confirmation of fax page. In fact I was asked for that along with the title and bill of sale at the counter US side.

If your fax receipt says it went through ok, you will be fine. Just take that confirmation with you!

Also Queenston/Lewiston requires 72 hours M-F. So if you fax on Thursday, you can't cross till Tues same time. This info is from the guard when I crossed into the US at Queenston, hence my going through Detroit.

EDIT: just got a call from US customs. they got the fax, everything is good!

Hey thanks for the info. My fax machine doesn't print fax receipt unfortunately. or i didn't know how to make it print one. Ya, i'm considering going through Detroit as well.

I faxed them the documents on tuesday and have left 3 msgs. no answer yet.

Wow, I stand corrected.

Good for you. Good luck with everything else. Definitley worth the extra work IMHO.

So guys I am planning to go over to Michigan and get a brand new R6 2009.

1. The dealer said he will charge me 6% sales tax and I will get the money back at the border is that true ?

2. He also said once I get insurance he can get a temp Michigan plate and I can drive it back to Canada and I guess go to Canadian Tire to get safety and RIV thing...

3.For a brand new bike do u still have to fax the ownership to the border ?

4. Do you still need a recall letter for a new bike ?

5. Is the border at Windsor open on saturday/sunday so I can ride the bike back ?

Thanks a lot guys my first import :)

1. Yes he will (charge you tax)in Michigan and AFAIK, NO (you won't get it back - although there have been conflicting posts here on the subject from what I remember)! Why not look in NY or another state that does not charge tax - just a thought.
2. Yes you can.
3. YES, most definitely (title, bill of sale)
4. I almost certain you do. I recall reading about it somewhere on this thread though, if you want to do a search, you should be able to find it.
5. Windsor is open 24/7. I actually came through with my bike on the weekend. Queenston/Lewiston was only M-F.

Good luck with the buy.

thanks dude .. if i can't get the sales tax back I won't buy it... price will be too high... is there a link where its sais motorcycle even made in japan for US don't need to pay duty ? I search for 3 hours and couldn't find anything...

If you do find such a link, it will be inaccurate anyway. In fact in addition to paying 13% taxes, you'll have to pay another 6% (might be 6.x% - I don't recall off the top of my head, I'm sure a search either here or on Google will confirm this for you) for a vehicle made in Japan or anywhere else other than North America.
