Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

do they not charge 6% duty on top of the taxes if the vehicle was not built in the Americas?

Yes, you will pay 6.1% duty on the bike. Last saturday I brought an Aprilia from states and I paid:
6.1% duty
6% GST
195+GST=206.70 RIV fee
and I will still pay the 7% PST when registering.

That goes for all the bikes manufactured outside North America. You will not pay duty on american bikes like HD.

To everyone who has imported a bike recently, what did you do for insurance? I have been told that you can't get insurance until the vehicle is registered in Ontario. I am planning to bring it home in the back of a truck but I am worried that something could happen on the way home. I am not looking to throw away 9k USD if we were to get into an accident and the bike were to be totaled.

Any suggestions or has anyone just taken a chance?

I brought mine back uninsured. I don't know the consequences if something happens to it, but if it's in a trailer, is it possible that your auto insurance might cover it as "contents"? If you have to stay overnight in the states, just make sure you put the trailer somewhere it won't get stolen.

Guys i brought a motorcycle in from the states 3 weeks ago,2004 r1,the process is very simple.I went to the Queenston border on a Sunday with a copy of the title,There is a red door which they do the importation and because it was sunday,I left a copy of the title plus my telephone number under the door. They called me back the next day to inform me that they had received it,and gave me a confirmation number. Two weeks later i picked up the Bike in NYC in a chrysler caravan and went to the rainbow bridge, they did not even look at the bike,Gave them the title pay the RIV fee $209.00,They called MTO right away and charge me the gst, however i was suppose to pay 5% duty because the vehicle was not made in North America, however they realized the error and did not bother to charge.I received a letter last week imforming me that i need a recall letter,i phoned Yamaha they sent it to me by email,i forwarded the email to Importation of motor vehicle and in the same day i received the form to take the bike to Canadian tire for the federal inspection it cost 1 penny. They sign the document and i faxed it back to MTO.That is it very simple. Please note you can take it to any border as long as it is not for commercial use.Hope this help.

i don;t think they are supposed too. Both of my bikes where made in italy, and no duties on either
somone also posted a link a few pages back, showing there should be no duty on bikes

Maybe it depends on which state you cross the border in? I thought I heard something about Michigan charging duty even if you got a vehicle for transport.

What error did they make not to charge you duty and I thought it was 6.1%.?

When was that? Last saturday I brought an Aprilia RSV and had to pay 6.1% duty.

Just to clarify..check the RIV site....If the bike is assembled or built in North America, or built for the North American market, duty does not apply...this applies to most of the major Jap mfrs, Triumph, BMW to name a few...some of the other imports such as Aprilla seem to be SOL.....

Good luck, all

I just heard that, to certify a bike, u can't take the bike to Canadian tire anymore. apparently there will be a new dedicated place that all bikes needs to go there and it will cost 600 bucks to get it certified. Is that true? anything to F&^Y rip you off, this mother F^%3

Where did you hear that? There is nothing indicated about that on the RIV website. It still says to go to Canadian Tire and have you vehicle inspected.

I got someone that PM'ed me the same thing.

I just got off the phone with RIV 2 minutes ago, they said this information is false and that it won't be changning anytime soon. They also said we can ONLY go to Canadian tire to certify vehicles.

so whoever is spreading that news is probably a dealer in Canada making stuff up to scare people from importing

lat one was oct. 29th, it;was a Ducati 916

and any bike sold here, i think, qualifies as built for the north american market no?

I called the customs office and it turns out that they made a mistake and will refund the duty I've paid. So, the costs of importing a bike are as follows:

6% GST
8% PST
RIV fee of $206.70

Well worth it.

cool thats what i thought, glad your getting your money back.

a friend brought over a subaru Impreza STI and isntead of charing him $100 a/c tax, they charged him $1000 A/C tax:happy3:

So you have to pay the State tax at the time of purchase? Then gst and pst when you reach the boarder?

Only a couple states require you to pay the state tax. If you are purchasing the vehicle for transport you usually do not pay any taxes in that state, you pay where the vehicle is registered.

If you are buying a vehicle in Michigan and taking delivery in person you will have to pay the state tax which is not refundable.

Urgent advice required.

I have a chance to buy a 30 year old vintage Honda which is a non runner and in bits. It has a title.

Can I bring it over? What do I need to do as RIV does not apply.

Thanks
