Ian Thompson acquitted

Yes. It may not be good for the mag spring if you store them for a long time topped up. Doesn't effect things 5/30 mags tho since its only partial compression.

I load my LAR mags after I clean them but I'm shooting them weekly.

With the 1 minute time lapse and them measuring his rooms out to the inch you just know they were after him. Maybe him blowing away the rooster is just the tip of the iceberg of his contribution in the lead up.

can you have a magazine loaded in your locked ammo box stored separate from your locked up gun?

Yep.

When I'm out coyote hunting I have a loaded magazine for my rifle ready to go so that all I have to do is get out, grab my rifle and once I'm far enough off the road, throw the magazine in. I don't store it loaded for the same reason D23 mentioned. Its only a 3 round magazine, so having 3 rounds in there during storage would kill the spring.

Non restricted, yes. For restricted they must also have a mechanism lock (trigger lock or a cable lock) and be locked up.
You can store non restricted "on display" as long as they have a mechanism lock. For restricted it's the same, only they also have to be locked to something that cannot be moved.

I just over do it... And even still, I'm capable of getting a gun unlocked and loaded in under a minute, no matter where I start in the house. I'm one of those people that has a place for everything so I'm pretty well organized when it comes to that. Doesn't hurt that my Maxus has a pretty cool loading feature that sucks the first round in the magazine in to the chamber automatically.

You do not need a trigger or cable lock on a restricted if it is in a safe made for firearms. Only if they are in a cabinet, container, or room that is difficult to break into. There are some who would argue that the stack-on cabinets are not a safe. I would not take the chance if that is what you store your firearms in.

Copied from the RCMP Safe storage and tranporting hand out

Restricted and prohibited firearms:
Attach a secure locking device so the firearms cannot
be fired and lock them in a cabinet, container or room
that is difficult to break into; or
Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was
built or modified specifically to store firearms safely.

Why not?

By the way, you can keep a restricted firearm in a safe without a trigger lock but can't keep it without the lock in a cabinet. So if you have a safe, it's perfectly legal to keep a couple of loaded mags next to your handgun and if there's a bump in the night, open the safe, slap in the mag, pocket another and go for a look-see if you're so inclined and willing to put up with the legal ringer that Ian Thomson had to go through. Another issue is that even if there is a home invasion scenario and you hurt one or two, your guns get taken away and the police won't protect you and your family if their homeboys start having vengeful thoughts.

only if the home invasion gets reported and the bodies are found.
