How much should I be paying?

Hi all,

I am looking into purchasing a CBR 600 F4I in about 3 months.

I am wondering how much I should be looking to spend?

Is 5g's too much?

No more than 3 for a great condition one, that is an old bike.

5gs?? Why would you even consider spending that much on an f4i? 3500 max in mint condition!

For 5k you could get a newer CBR600RR. If you're having trouble finding stuff on Kijiji its because the listing **** is poorly setup. Google "Kijiji Toronto CBR600F4i" and you'll find more listings than if you use Kijiji's specify tool.

get a 03+ 600RR. nicer looking IMO and about 5 grand gets you someting nice.
some people like the F4i though, and i dont know if that is classified as a SS or a standard...also things to consider.

for 5k you should be able to get a 06 600rr

This. Unless insurance is an issue for you it's pretty much a no brainer

As much as the RR would be nice, it is mostly an insurance thing. Being under 25 and such has large factors!

On the plus side, I might be able to stretch to the RR as I'd be on a plan B.

I also mostly chose the f4i for ergonomics as I've heard it is technically a sport / touring but if someone could vouch for the comfort of a RR. I'm curious if there is a big difference between riding posture and comfortability.

From what I'm told, the insurance drop is not at 25 anymore, its at 30.

just sit on both bikes, i've ridden both and I don't find either one uncomfortable. The F4i is more mild so if your leaving the bike stock get the RR

Wow, seriously? Not that I'm planning on getting into any trouble to affect my rates, but I was kind of looking forward to the instant savings when I turned 25.

I've sat on the 2013 RR and thought it was pretty comfortable but I'd rather have a more straight-up position when sitting.

What do you mean by mild? I am most likely going to be using the motorcycle as my every day vehicle and going to keep it stock for the most part. Aesthetically, I may change some things but nothing on the performance side.

I'm having some difficulty finding some bikes on kijiji less than my listed price range. Everyone is trying to sell their 2002 with 30,000 km - 50,000 km for 4g's :|

I think Mild as in the position is slightly less aggressive compare to the 600RR, you can always check the following site for riding position base on your height. Also I wouldn't pay 5g for a F4I they are great bike but for that kind of money you can definitely get a 600RR, but if you want the F4I than you should negotiate to get it at a better price.

Look outside of Toronto. My buddy just bought a 2001 R6 for $1,800. 2h drive.

Uhaul bike trailer is dirt cheap. Many passenger cars with a hitch can tow a bike. You're talking 1,000lbs. ... Or a friend with a pickup truck. .

Another factor is that this time of the year, whatever was posted for sale over winter at a good price is gone. Wait another month and guys will start pulling their bikes out of storage. More options.

What people list their bikes for is not what they sell for. Think of what the motorcycle is actually worth and offer 20% less. Some will cry and call you a lowballer, some are desperate and will sell.

Personally, maximum I would pay for a 12 year old 600cc Honda is about $2,500, in good shape.

I bought a 13 year old CBR900RR for $1,450 - needed tires and a new petcock seal. Sold it for $2,600. Be patient.

I feel like this route is the smarter path but since it's also my first bike purchase, I have no idea how to make it smooth. How do I negotiate? Before or while I'm there?

I'm noticing a steady increase in the prices now so I'm a bit worried. Will I still be able to find a good deal in May?

$2500 seems like a long shot haha

It's not a long shot, just scout all of Ontario and don't fall in love with one specific bike, there are thousands of them. Places like Barrie, Kingston, Windsor are a gold mine. Tri-cities sometimes, London is good. Sudbury is awesome for prices, if you are willing to go that far. Ottawa, too.

Since I am only making one drive when the bike is distant, I will negotiate up front. If the bike is not in the condition as described by the owner then I start taking money off the table.

For local deals I usually negotiate in person. Check for common parts that need to be replaced right away. For example - tires - $350, chain and sprockets - $200.

Bring someone with you, even if they know squat. An uninvolved person with cool mind is great for advice. They may not spot a technical issue but they may hear a logical fallacy from the seller and will keep you from getting overly excited.

Don't be afraid to buy a dropped bike, most of them were. If you can replace a couple of levers and live with a cracked fairing, that can save you hundreds of dollars. Look for a low speed dropped bike with cosmetic damage and you're golden. Beware of cracked/bent frame though. Paint, powder coating, stickers - all could be masking something.

It's also not necessarily an increase in price, it's just that fresh listings are coming out when it gets warmer. Even if some are priced higher than norm, there is more to pick from. Bottom line - asking price means nothing if the market is not there.

Finally, do not limit yourself to just one specific model of the bike. Look at other options. Remember that this is your first one, not your last one.

Thank you for the advice. Another thing: What kind of mileage should I be limiting myself to?

No problem, anything over 10 years old you can usually get cheap unless it's a Harley or a BMW.

Mileage - if you think of reselling next season then try to stay under 25,000km. People scoff at 30K + bikes.
Realistically, if you're keeping it for yourself - it's more about proper maintenance. My VFR at 60K, doesn't have any issues. It's not unheard of bikes going over 100K with ease.

Find a bike you like, contact the seller and ask all the questions. Come to an agreement on price and send me a link to the ad.

My fee, 50% of what i save you. :D

So if you find a bike of your dreams and you agree on 4,000$, and im able to get it for you for 3K, i get $500 from you...and you save 500 ;)

Dont limit yourself as much by mileage as by the condition of the bike.

There are bikes with 3K that are beat to hell, meanwhile other bikes have 50K and look and run like the day they left the showroom floor
