How many of you guys ride with cameras on your helmets?

I have a knockoff GoPro that I hate with a passion. It worked fine, until the one ride where I really really really really needed it to work - summer of 2018 when I was out west. I had the most incredible ride down the full length of Iron Mountain Road. Hardly any bikes in my way, the ones that were moved over, I carved it up and loved every second of it. Couldn't wait to see the footage later that day while back at camp.

It recorded 60 seconds and had apparently stopped.

Anyhow, as for using one as a dashcam, several problems from my perspective:

- Gotta take it off all the time if you have it mounted on your bike otherwise it's a theft risk.
- Gotta get power to it constantly if you're riding a long day.
- Gotta have it in the waterproof case otherwise forgetting it during one accidental rainstorm = it's screwed.

A friend with a Goldwing just bought a purpose designed motorcycle dashcam that stays permanently mounted on his bike and records in a loop to an SD Card in the base-unit mounted under his seat or something. Hardwired in. Seems to make more sense to me.

all well and good until something happens out of FOV. Lid or bust imo.

Drift Ghost X is water resistant and there's an optional waterproof case. Also has a 5 hour battery life. Carrying 2 of those should take care of most days.

I use 3 cameras - 2 on the bike and one on the helmet
Sena 10c on the helmet - its more inconspicuous than a gopro, but the video quality is not up to par of a gopro but good enough. The new 10cEVO can record at 4k but only at 30fps. I imagine a 4k 60fps will be avail in the next yr or 2. Mike is internal and it also has all the features of a bluetooth headset. When I get pulled over by the cops they never mention the camera.

1 bullet cam upfront always recording in loop as soon as the bike starts, one in the rear as well in loop. If bike is shut off they stop recording. These units do not have image stabilization so you have to mount them strategically, I find the rear camera can shake at certain RPMs, but smooth the majority of the time. The front is smooth. They may have stabilization now, my set up is 5 yrs old now.
Innovv bullet cameras

With a 360 like the insta360 x2, you can clip it to the mirror stalk. Its good unless you plan to go 200+, its probably still good then but it'll be up to the clamp you used.

Most officers either don't know or don't care, but FYI there is an OPP officer in Lindsay that likes to hand out tickets and has gotten convictions for helmet cams:

still haven't seen any mounting system other then ones that sticks it far out. if you have an example feel free to share

I use a GoPro HERO7 Silver on mounted on the helmet left side (garmin mount with extra length)
Taped the mic pin-hole so there is no wind noise in recording but if you talk loud (self talk or sing :ROFLMAO:) it will capture. Never had to use it for purpose other than reviewing my ride. Battery is not the greatest for all day ride so i primarily use it for riding within city limits and turn it off/on when its in the country side. One annoyance is wind drag, noticeable when you are fighting strong winds. Camera itself is waterproof so had no problem using it in pouring rain.

yeah just moving to the 7 black myself. 3m is adhering to the helmet as we speak.

I don't want anything visible but I do want to get something permanently mounted on the bike and hard wired. I have a front and rear dash cam for my car and I want the same for my bikes.

makes the most sense IMO. easiest hassle free option as a dashcam.

helmet cams are more for capturing rides or content creation but in that sense it's been mentioned 360 cameras are great.
Got an insta360 one x last year for a trip in beginning of 2020. It's great to not worry about where the camera is pointed, the stabilization is amazing, can do panning/zoom-in-out shots and transitions all in post.
With a long enough pole you can get drone-like shots. Don't have someone to film you going around corners? Just drop it on a good spot with a tripod and you can catch it all.

Need to remember to charge another device, erase footage, turn it on and off.
Guaranteed the few times I forget one of these is when I will get into an accident.

I have a Hero 7 Black on my helmet but id say it isnt the best for dashcam purposes. ~1 hour or less of record time at 1080p 30fps

I have a hero7 Black, you can loop the video. The size of the SD card also matters, I run 64-128gb min

Problem with the GoPros is the battery life, and atleast mine, always freezing or stops at the worst moment

Yep bring batteries and be ready to swap every hr.
Depending where it's mounted, one can just run a USB cable to it from a portable charger, and that keeps it going. The hypersmooth stabilization is the reason I still stick with it, despite the issues.

Though I carry a Kriega R15 and have it mounted on the shoulder. Easy access, good viewpoint, and after Shumi's coma from the gopro going through the helmet, helmet mounts aren't something I even consider

I've been riding with a GoPro on the chin of my helmet for a few years now. Just upgraded to the Hero 8 Black this year. Also running an external microphone into my helmet so I can talk **** and cut out the wind noise. Never had an issue with the police.

I ride with a GoPro Session (about 1.25" square, water proof to something like 30') or a Contour GPS enabled camera with a 3d printed GoPro adapter. Wind noise sucks on either, but when there's something I really want to record (track days, Dragon, twisties) I'll run a rear facing camera in a waterproof case - that really kills the wind noise.

I had a cop once try to convince me I should hand over my footage from my helmet mounted camera to prove I wasn't speeding.

Like most riders Go Pro was the way to go. Been riding with a Garmin Virb and the latest is a DJI Osmo Action Camera.

Just bought the Insta One 360 X2. Will load it on a selfie stick. To keep the batteries going added a Ulanzi power bank. Which will give me about an extra 3-4 hour. Plus a spare power bank. Will be interesting.

As "Evoex" mentioned. We do not have a right to privacy in public.

Do we not have a right to film anybody? . Including the LEO. Not sure in Canada but in the USA they are protected by the Constitution. The LEO will ask you a bunch of Questions trying for you to admit your guilt. Example, "Do you know how fast you where going? If you tell them that will be used in Court against you.
