That you have never been "given" anything by the government is entirely plausible if you came from a wealthy family and you were 100% private schooled or home schooled and never went to a public doctor in Canada--just as examples... Or I guess an old stock hillbilly that never needed no schoolin' nor need no doctorin' no neverminding
Otherwise the government pays the cost for public grade school through high school. The government also pays 1/3 to 1/2 of the actual costs of public Colleges or Universities (how much depends on the year and province, they are subsidized by taxpayers), tuition just pays the rest. Visit the doctor or worse, public funded health care. Sure the government is technically the taxpayer but they are in the context of "immigrants" or the "poor" or whatever. These are just the two obvious ones (education and healthcare)....
It is entirely possible that the government has never given you anything but unlikely unless someone was a new immigrant that came with money yesterday or was 100% private everything.
Now some people will pay more in taxes in their life than they use, others less. This includes both multi-generational people and newcomers.
Exactly. I'm in the black with OHIP. That's about it.That is an insurance plan, though. Most of the so called freebies I see friends and acquaintances getting I don't seem to qualify for. I see so many programs (eg: Crazy Aunt Kathy throwing $50M/yr. at the In Vitro Fertilization program in perpetuity) that all seem to be 'Oh, this is for other people, not you'. So what do I get? 'Let's have a look. SWMNK w. a job......here's your invoice. See you next year'.
