Holiday destinations

My time in Mexico is almost over, I came to Oaxaca pretty tired of all the travelling but it’s kind of grown on me. There’s no Uber here, but you don’t need it, there’s a bunch of things to see and it’s all within walking distance. The cost of everything is also cheaper than Cdmx(which explains why I see so many gringos here)

There’s a lot of really good street art, and the buildings are colourful and well maintained.

There are independent artsy shops and museums all over the place.

At night it seems the city comes to life, there’s a giant square in the middle where there are live musical performances by full on professional musicians.

Vendors selling stuff, restaurants etc

Outside the city, the countryside has a rugged beauty to it. There are a ton of mescal factories all over the place (some professional grade, some of questionable quality)

I rented a car and drove around as I wanted to explore more of the country. Took a while but I got used to Mexican driving. (Horizontal white lines mean giant speed bumps on the highway, no stop signs or red lights mean a rolling 4 way stop, etc etc) sometimes there are red lights which are easily visible, other times there are LED panels which aren’t so visible. There is no slow lane, here just the shoulder of the road becomes the slow lane, passing can be a bit sketchy, but doable.

I did a mescal tour at a factory with a bunch of Spanish tourists I made friends with in Mexico City, I randomly met them in Oaxaca , they drank and I took pictures.

I also went to a natural hot springs up in the mountains, hidden away from civilization behind small remote villages.

There were lots of twisty roads, and as long as you stuck to the main roads the quality was decent. Would be fun on a bike

In conclusion I would say Mexico City was the best part of the country for me , I was sick for 2 days from eating bad lettuce and tomatoes on a burger, but even then I had so much fun, and liked the vibe of the city, I would come back and spend more time here without thinking twice. It’s so much fun, and there is so much to do.

Guadalajara has a lot of young people, a large student population, a lot of cute girls(not on the same level as Barcelona, sorry @PacoT ), and a lot of gay people apparently.

Oaxaca is nice, the pace is much slower, which some people like, but im more of a city boy from
Delhi/toronto, so I felt right at home in CDMX.

Viva 🇲🇽

What’s the recommendation on currency in Mexico? USD or CAD for tips and trinkets

I’ve always carried US , if you leave Canada with CDN dollars , your broke ( except Cuba) in most places . US works everywhere , even in places where they don’t accept it ( again Cuba)

USD, there are lots of conversion to MEX booths (USD to MEX) if you want to have local currency.
Probably can do in the hotel/resort as well.

I never use CAD anywhere but here.

I'm joining this convo late so forgive me if this has been said. I've seen reports that the cartels have moved over the US/Mexico border en mass, and have taken up residence on reservation lands because the reservation cops aren't equipped to deal with it, and the Federal government refuses to. It's seems unreal how quickly the west is falling.

Kind of random but ok

Forgot to mention, Oaxaca seems noticeably more hot than Cdmx. If this is winter can’t imagine the summer

Oaxaca in the summer months is melting hot . Not much happens from noon till 3ish , it’s just too warm .

I remember there was a moment in time when the CAD and USD was close to par. At the time, some of the ski resorts in the Vermont area took Canadian dollars at face value.

I think it was Jay Peak.

Edit: Oh snap, they're *still* doing it!

AT PAR FOR CANADIANS

Canadian guests, with valid proof of current residency, can purchase their lift tickets at par with CAD cash here at the resort (all online/credit card purchases are processed in US funds). Check out our full At Par Policy.

Those were good times. I didn't bother topping up my USD bank account because the conversion was practically 1 to 1.

Well it's owned by Canadians I believe.
A few of the border resorts in the US use to have Canadian days taking CAD at par. Like Canadian week/weekend.

Cool place, the trademark gondola is mostly for looks, worth it one time to take, but the next chair over takes you practically to the same location. When I visited we had good snow for eastern resorts, almost powder like. Was a fun trip!

Yeah they have the best snow in the area for sure. Gondola gets a you a bit higher on the hill and it's worth it imo no matter which direction you go when you get off especially if you go right (the powder in that glades section is really amazing). If you go left the view on the other side of the mountain is a must see also. The line can get crazy long though so then it's not worth waiting for. Crossing the border there in Magog is usually very fast and you can hit Orford or Breaumont for night skiing.

Pro tip for @mimico_polak if the prices are listed in the business or establishment you’re visiting, you know you’re paying the same price as everyone, but if there are no listed prices anywhere (on a menu or on a sign or on the wall) be prepared to pay double (gringo prices)

This is how you know which establishment to visit and which to avoid.

Whereabouts? Just south of San Salvador? El Salvador has little Mayan temple places scattered everywhere that are pretty awesome. Suchitoto is an interesting place. I saw some houses there that had gateposts made out of old missiles from the civil war. This is worth a trip Ruta de las Flores | The most beautiful colonial style towns in El Salvador

Some of the nicest people I ever met were in El Salvador. Just stay away from overly tattooed people!
