Help me diagnose this scary chatter at TMP Turn 2

It's been two or three trackdays since I last posted in this thread, during which I became much better at downshifting and wasn't getting that chatter anymore. But in preparation for the upcoming weekend, I opened up the cap on the clutch cover and adjusted the lifter pins that are supposed to influence how easy it would slip. Based on information on the web, the further in the three pins are, the more it should slip. But if they're too much in, it will slip under acceleration too. So, I adjusted them from 2 1/4 turns out to only 1 turn out (screwed them in 1 1/4 turns). Then I went around the block to "test" it, but it seems impossible to test the slipper in a 40 km/h speed limit residential streets, the acceleration even more so. So I guess I'll see it on the track this Saturday. Worst case---I'll waste one or two sessions in adjustments instead of improving my skills, but oh well. I'll also bring with me the +3 rear sprocket I have and really disliked before, which I might try again if the slipper proves to work good (I'm -1 front tooth permanently). Assuming I'm in good control of shifting anywhere, that gearing should be better for TMP theoretically. Then I'll be able to upshift to 4th on the second straight, maybe go into 3rd for Turns 2 and 3, and drop to 2nd before left turn 4 for the remainder of the infield. Damn it, too many things to try, and too few sessions per track-day! I wish it was beginning of the season when it would be an open track very often due to shaky weather or small number of bikes.

You guys are all madmen. I have lapped at TMP maybe 12 times and *still* have not found the courage to carry enough speed into 1 (or 2) to use all the room on the exit. At GB I am in fourth going into the carousel and, again, am too chicken **** to lay off the brakes until the markers.

None of this is boring. T4 at Mosport, done properly, seems like suicide. I doubt I'll ever be that good.

It must be hard being so awesome that GB and TMP bore you! We chickens have more fun it would seem.

If I'm not doing 1:18 at TMP, then there's still more to learn.

There is always more to learn, always new ways to improve your times. But I have to agree with carboncat, the more tracks you do not only do you learn how to ride track (not a track) but you can start to really dial in your bike to perform how you feel comfortable on it. In reference to your post above, finely dialing in your slipper for TMP probably wont be the right setting for, say, corner 8 at Mosport - 6th gear, WOT and then bang it down a couple with no brakes, just as an example. You dont want to be adjusting it everywhere you go (slow speed or high speed tracks)

My goal is always a neutral handling bike, then I just change the rear sprocket depending on the track and be done with it. Is it a perfect set-up, probably not, but I'm chasing smooth laps, not tenths.

All that being said, i'll probably be there on Sat as well trying to improve my lines.

You don't need all the room on the exit of 1. If you're doing it right you are apexing late and staying to the inside to avoid the moguls. Early brake into 1, sacrifice some entry speed to keep the exit tight and get on the gas hard.

I must be turning in too early. There is an apex cone out there and I am always apexing WAAAYYY before that.

It would be great to get a tow around that place from someone who actually knows what they are doing. Figuring things out mostly on my own, it has taken me a dozen outings to get to 1:27, which is about 10 s off what would be a near top qualifying time for my class of bike.

By contrast, at GB last week I had a professional coach helping me with lines and braking markers. It was the first time I rode that layout, and only my second time at GB at all...and by the end of the day I was about 10 s off the best BOTT LW times. So, one day to accomplish what took me 12 on my own at TMP. Sure, that's not the whole story because in that time I have also gained general overall comfort with higher corner speeds etc., but still....left to my own devices at GB Technical Track I would still be trying to figure how to get the bike into and out of the bus stop bit without losing all of my momentum. Hopefully I get better at figuring out lines on my own, but up until this point I can honestly say that none of this **** is obvious to me.

Sorry for the threadjack.

Oopsie.. 1:12 ?

Don't be cheeky now. You know what I mean.

I mentioned to you once, in another thread, to try other tracks as I truly believed it will help you bring your time down at TMP without actually riding TMP. Hardest thing for a new track rider is to step outside their comfort level. Sounds like you're stuck inside yours. Everythings familiar, you know people, you know the track I get it. I was like that. But you really have to force yourself to try different tracks. Honestly, a few different days at a few different tracks then a trip back to TMP and I guarantee you'll be 2 seconds faster a lap. I was, and I ain't no great shakes. Two days at TMP in 2012 I think my best was 1.24. I day in 2013 and I'm at 1.20. In between a crap load of days at other tracks. I'm even ignoring Calabogie for a month now to try different stuff, with the intention of going back to Calabogie and getting faster from the experience elsewhere. W

hich remnds me, I have to look whats available down in the States for August.

Oh, I agree, it makes total sense, and I'll follow this advice. I'm not at all reluctant to try different tracks though, I'm going to TMP so often only because it's easier /possible/ to schedule it (between work and family). But yeah, will do everything possible to try other tracks too in the near future, for sure. I have no doubt it will be beneficial, also more fun :)
