HD helmet cams

Creative HD Vado mounted inside my helmet. Might not be the safest thing...but at least I can talk & it's directly in my field of vision/POV.

It really depends what the function is. For a helmet-mounted one, I'd pick the Gopro over Contour (although the Contour looks more stylish/sleek).

GoPro hd....
Pros:
-versatile mounting
-good picture quality, great field of view and minimal shaking
-awesome sound quality with the vented door
-long battery life

the bad:
-menu system is archaic
-remote control to start/stop recording would be nice

hhhmmmm "GoPro & Contour" were actually the exact brands i was looking at. I really do like the way the contour camera looks on the side of the helmet over the GoPro. But it sounds like "GoPro" has way better features

I have contour 720P and pic quality is great but sound is useless (when moving anyway).
Controls are simple and it has dual lasers to see where cam is pointing at.
Apparently sound is fixed in newer models but I have no experience with them.
Never used go pro but they look like crap on top of your head. IMHO :)

I use this. Not really HD, but does a very decent job, it's as light as a feather and dirt cheap. One video from it here, another one here.

I actually have a GoPro HD, and I have to say its awesome. Almost no wind noise at all, since it comes with 2 different cases depending on the speed you may be going. But video quality is really amazing, and will all the mounting options its really easy to make a fun video of little trips or long ones...

PS - I would post a vid to show you the quality, but I am going faster than I want to advertise.

Drift HD170 is the way to go, it includes all accessories where gopro and contour accessories are sold separately. They are all pretty much the same thing, same manufacture, different design. Let me know if you need a deal on contour or drift.

Please post a picture of where you mounted this inside your helmet, I can't picture it.

you got pm...

Im really leaning towards the contour because of the way it looks on the helmet. i totally agree that the GoPro cam looks kinda dorky lol....no offense to those who have it.

so your making a fashion statement.....not a great vid.....ok

I'd definitely go with the GoPro. Check out their new video with 2010 highlights. I am thinking about purchasing one for myself for this snowboarding season, and just to have for any extreme sport i do. It's a pretty awesome little camera, nice quality, and with plenty adapters for whatever you want to mount it on. http://www.radioworld.ca/ has some good deals, and some other options in store.

Were those vids really from that $10 camera? if so, I'm impressed...
Can you comment on the battery life?

Search KeyCain camera on YouTube and you'll see a lot of videos. I have 2 of these cameras and love them. $13 off ebay. About 2hour on one charge

I agree, why not put a digital camera duct taped to the helmet? At least the Contour looks good with the same video quality and with the contour you can aim the camera. You can't do that with the GoPro.

I have a ContourHD 1080 myself; the video quality is definitely excellent on it, but there are a couple of flaws.

1) No on-camera switch to toggle day/night-time shooting. No still-photo mode (though the new ContourGPS does have this.)
2) As mentioned above, mic is useless once moving, although some have modded the camera to fix this -- either by putting foam inside the body, or wiring up an external mic of some sort (mostly for vlogging.) The new ContourGPS model claims to have a better mic that deals with wind noise, but I've yet to see a motorcycle video shot with one. Considering getting one myself and mounting my HD to the bike instead.
3) It seems to me at least, that the GoPro might be a bit better at handling vibrations/camera shake. Although this can be corrected with video-editing software anyway, but I've seen many GoPro videos that seem way smoother than the ones I've shot with my ContourHD1080.

If you don't tweak the video settings, you may find the exposure is either too high or too low depending on the situation. I have mine set to Contrast=62, Exposure=2, Sharpness=3, and Average metering for evening/night-time as I found its "Dusk" setting useless at night. Seems to work fairly well for me, but still doesn't see much of anything if there's insufficient light in the area, and the video is certainly not as sharp as it would be in daylight -- but this goes for most cameras anyway.

Daytime settings are the default daylight ones, except I have the Exposure set to 0 instead of -1. However, you can leave the above night-time settings as default and they'll work in daytime, the camera will just be much slower to adjust to varying light situations.

I've considered picking up a GoPro as an alternative to the Contour, but I do agree that the GoPro looks pretty weird when helmet-mounted. The Contour looks almost natural.

Edit: I do agree with another post up above: having the laser-guided aiming is a lifesaver with the Contour cameras. I've read many posts/comments from vloggers/users of the GoPro and other such cameras that went for a great ride, only to find out that their camera was pointed at the ground or the sky or something the entire time.

I wore one of these once as someone wanted me to film some high-speed stuff. Well, it was the boxy style, and up near 300 KPH the thing nearly tore my helmet off. So I've avoided them since. Someone on the forum PM'd me that the lipstick cams are what we need if we're going to film high-speed. Any of you that have gone that fast know the importance of aerodynamics - you are riding as fast as a Moto GP bike, or an F1 Ferrari! The box camera just doesn't cut it. I need one similar to that mounted on the back of a GP bike. Does the Contour take aerodynamics into consideration? I can't believe GoPro hasn't taken this into consideration.

So far this is what im getting...

GoPro
- Awkward fit
- Great quality videos
- Great sound quality for video blogging
- Can mount in different postions

Contour
- Sleeker fit
- Great quality videos
- Poor sound quality
- Laser alignment

There's only about a 25bucks price difference quoted at radioworld.ca
