Getting your unplated bike to the shop

Too funny, but so true.

OP, I'm currently in the same position and I am just going to ride the bike to the shop (I actually take it out and ride around in the parking lot across the street or around the neighborhood as well). I have plates on the bike, but they are the previous owners (he okayed it) AND they're expired so that's pretty bad. I don't know which is worse.

I had a couple of shops near me to choose from, but I am going to probably the most expensive one, but one where I know the route shouldn't cause me any trouble vs. the other shop that's in a downtown area. Not happening. And it's a safety so I'm not worried about a few extra dollars. I'm also in the Durham Region so I wouldn't consider it high risk (but cops LOVE to be wherever you are).

im srsly considering it as well just to dodge the hassle of lifting the bike in and out of a pickup and fastening it down etc.. the shop im gonna head too is just 5 mins away on a south service rd along the highway, but id feel better if i can get my hands on a friends or family members plates just to look legit.

Exactly. I rented a Uhaul to get the bike home, but for a 5 minute drive I don't see the point. And I'd probably be by myself so strapping in, taking off, and then strapping and and taking off is just too much. I'd probably drop the bike and THEN have it fail haha.

Just going to ride it! And if you can get some plates I say go for it, but if a cop is close enough to scan it, it won't matter if you have plates or not haha. But you'll be fine. I plan to go in the morning as they open.

Re-read my earlier response. It seems clear no plates is far less painful in the long run if you get caught vs plates registered to another vehicle, expired in addition.

Gamble either way, no plates attracts attention, wrong plates attracts a ton of butthurt if caught.

I'd still rent a $15 Uhaul before potentially hosing my bike insurance up over it, but to each their own.

A motorcycle trailer from uhaul cost $14.95 a day....a ticket for driving without insurance is $5,000.

That being said, depends how far your drive is :p

What I don't get is why are you guys advertising what you're going to do.
All that's missing is the time of your departure.
How about if a cop waits right in front of the bike shop next time?

You guys do know that cops read these forums?

meh they dont know the day/time ill actually go plus im looking at all the options.. ill probably end up using a truck

What? Cops can't read!
Actually, I was thinking the same thing...thought he was gonna say which shop by accident.

Pretty sure they have better things to do than stake out a bike shop for days, pulling over ever single person that comes in.

Anyone that thinks this is a crime bad enough to warrant a stakeout, or use any police resources at all really, has lived a very sheltered life. No offense.
Do you know how much drugs youd have to be selling before the cops decided to devote resources to watching your house? Its alot of drugs.

pretty much, even for a cop to follow you to run your plates is a bit out of the ordinary.. unless your riding like a fool

+1. Maybe if you're organizing an all-illegal, no-plates wheelie/stunt rally, they might call it worth it to corpse camp you. One guy riding an unplated bike to a shop? I doubt they would give more than half a F

Not sure if this option has been mentioned before, but with CAA Plus can get a tow for up to 250km.

In the end, despite all I've posted here, I'd tend to agree.

It's just that I'm the poster boy for Murphy's Law. I could take the plate off my bike on the street in front of my own house to secure it better...and a cop would turn the corner.

My wife's bike is sitting in the garage right now unplated and uninsured. Wanted to take it for a putter on Sunday just to move the fluids around a little, I live on a quiet crescent...but same thing, Murphy is sitting there in the back of my head just waiting to strike. ;)

I thought about doing this last year and it was a no go...
I honestly cant remember why. I think the reason was they will only tow you if youre stuck on the road somewhere, not just from your house to the shop. And if youre bike isnt safietied, why would it be on the road?

I think that was the reason. Im not entirely sure. I just remember they wouldnt go for it. At least in my case.
Solid idea though.

for sure, i was sketching while riding it to where i stored the bike at a family members house, i took quiet streets and had somone follow me but was paranoid as hell haha but i had a smile from ear to ear cause that was my first time riding outside of the training course. Tbh ill probably end up using a truck or trailer because the shop reqs me to cross a main street.
