Getting your unplated bike to the shop

Awesome thanks for the feedback gents :) My bikes in my name but listed as UNFIT so looks like the only options are truck/trailer, Risk it for the biscuit or find a guy that will come to the house.

4am ride to shop?

It's been my experience that driving in the middle of the night attracts more police attention vs less. On a motorcycle, probably even more so. ;)

The potential costs should you get pinched if you're plateless or using a wrong plate greatly outweighs the costs of doing it legally (truck/trailer or mobile mechanic). Only you can assess the risk/benefit to yourself.

Not many bike on the roads this time of year, so if you run past any cops, I'm sure they'll be on the lookout for such a quick and easy way to fulfill their quota. Whoops, I meant to say performance measurement targets. Don't forget to calculate potential ongoing insurance increases in that risk assessment.

One other thing, I realize that 'unfit' is just a MTO status, but is the bike actually safe to ride? Brakes, tires, chain, steering head tension, etc. You mentioned being a new rider...

edit:

I saw your other post. If your '08 Ninja 250 has the original tires, then although the tread depth may be ok, I'd expect the rubber to be age-hardened. With road surface temps this time of year, the biggest risk to riding would be reduced traction. Easy to lowside from too much throttle in a turn or loose the front in a curve or when braking.

swap a plate from another bike is better...its what I did. Draws much less attention and I only had to go 6-7 km's
I did that and I had to ride from bellfountain to streetsville. Make sure your bike draws no attention, mine was a suzuki savage with a sissy bar. Tiny cruiser, total "mom" bike.

You guys are overlooking the most obvious solution. Call Ted at Rosey Toes (Google it) he's been known to come to your house to do a safety.

Exactly...just don't understand why anyone would risk screwing up your driving record to the point where you might not actually be able to afford to enjoy your motorcycle afterwards (when your insurance goes through the roof because of the potential tickets) when you can rent one of these for $14.95 for 24 hours.

Dude, find a relative or friend with a trailer hitch on their car, it only needs to be a class 2 or bigger, and away you go.

There is a temporary plate and there is a trip permit.
The temporary plate is an actual licence plate for a limited period.
It is issued for a variety of reasons. It will only be issued to a vehicle that is branded as FIT.
A trip permit is paper and is valid for 10 days.
It's used simply to get the vehicle from one place to another, essentially to get the safety before the vehicle is plated.
I'm not certain what the branding conditions are for trip permits, but I would assume the vehicle would have to be FIT as well.
A lot of folks seem to be confusing the temp plate with the trip permit.

Both of those are the same thing. There are no more paper trip permits for the inside of the windshield, they now issue an actual plate with a T sticker instead of the regular annual sticker. They are valid for 10 days and are supposed to be used to transfer the vehicle for safety and etest. As stated before, you must have valid insurance and the ownership must show "fit" status.

i dont get it tho dont you need the safety for it to be FIT

Assuming the previous owner had the vehicle on the road, the portion of the ownership you get at purchase will show it as FIT, and within a time window before you change the ownership to your name that's sufficient to get the temp sticker. If you transfer it into your name first without a safety it will show "UNFIT" and you are no longer eligible.

It's a bit of a catch22. It's technically "FIT" on paper only at that point - it could fail the safety miserably with a mile long list of things that need fixing, but they'll still give you that temporary plate sticker based on the assumption it's still roadworthy. This is the loophole created by our provinces lack of regular vehicle inspections - there's a lot of junk running up and down our roads that is probably not safe just because it's entirely possible it's been a decade or two since some older vehicles were actually subjected to an inspection.

They are not the same thing and the paper permits are still available.
I got a 10 day paper permit last month.

I have checked with the Ministry. It turns out the 10 day paper permit was stopped on Jan. 1, 2016.
It has been replaced by the temporary plate as outlined above.
It seems there was a problem distributing temporary motorcycle plates to Service Ontario locations in time.
Those locations that didn't receive them were allowed to continue to use the paper permits until they got the plates.

Luckily when I did this in fall I had plate of my other bike to use on unplated bike :)

I dunno how you did that. I tried to do that with a car I had plates for at home. They made me buy another plate to put the temporary sticker on as they said the temp paper permit doesn't exist anymore.

Meh. I just did it, you know? I had the insurance and no plate. They wouldn't give me a temp plate. I just rode it up to the shop on the backroad and got the certy. Screw 'em. Too many rules in this commie province.

Too funny, but so true.

OP, I'm currently in the same position and I am just going to ride the bike to the shop (I actually take it out and ride around in the parking lot across the street or around the neighborhood as well). I have plates on the bike, but they are the previous owners (he okayed it) AND they're expired so that's pretty bad. I don't know which is worse.

I had a couple of shops near me to choose from, but I am going to probably the most expensive one, but one where I know the route shouldn't cause me any trouble vs. the other shop that's in a downtown area. Not happening. And it's a safety so I'm not worried about a few extra dollars. I'm also in the Durham Region so I wouldn't consider it high risk (but cops LOVE to be wherever you are).
