Getting your unplated bike to the shop

On a somewhat related note, does anyone know any good shops (preferably around the Newmarket/Bradford area) I can take my Honda CBR F4i to get safety'd? I'd like to stay local but if there's really good shops farther I'm willing to make the trip.

A mobile safety is illegal and the person writing it is risking huge fines and loss of their ability to write one again.

Edge Performance in Bradford. I bought my Versys there from Drew. The service there is good. They are right on hwy 11.

Let me tell you what happened to me this weekend.

I tried to do the responsible thing and spent 2 hours getting a trailer, borrowing a car that can tow a trailer from family, because my 2 door coupe won't tow anything, borrowing straps to tie the bike down. Got the bike on the trailer, drove about 2km, hit a bump, and the bike fell down on the trailer. Not a lot of damage, just cracked some of the plastics, easily replaceable. But still bummed me out.

After that, I may or may not have driven home, took the bike down, and just rode it to the shop afterall. All that effort and a dropped bike and SWIM just ended up riding it to the shop anyways :/

You try and do the right thing....

Oh and I bumped my knee pretty bad at one point getting out of the trailer! Get ready for a lawsuit, uhaul!

Thanks, the damage isnt too bad. The cheap plastics kind of acted like crumple zones and saved the important parts. Frame sliders helped too. No major damage. All the plastics that were damaged can be replaced. Bike is still totally rideable, still passed safety with no issues, thank god.

I find plastics are some of the more expensive and useless parts of replacing pieces on a sporty bike :p

Haha ya. I'm in no rush to replace them.
But not expensive. The one piece that really got destroyed was just a little piece near the rear around the pillion seat, just a tiny simple little chunk of plastic. I found one on ebay for $34.95.

Luckily the large front fairing is more or less ok, that wouldve been expensive. All my mirrors and indicators on that side are totally fine too. The bike kinda landed on the side of the trailer, those uhaul trailers are tiny, so it wasnt really a full drop. Call it 2/3rds of a drop lol

Rode my 650R with the plastics held together with wire for like 2 years before I bought some replacements online at half what the dealer wanted.

I hope you're joking.

So, you did the right thing right up to securing the bike in the trailer at which point, evidently, you did something wrong. Still better than the risk otherwise in the end. Read up on proper bike securement now. ;)

But he did end up risking it, anyway. Just wasted money and time first.

How did you tie down the bike? I'm told you only need two straps but I always use more and get told I've over done it.

Ya, ya I know. :p This isnt the first bike I've towed though. Towed my 250r like 50km with no issues. Probably just a heavier bike. Shouldve used more straps and made them tighter. Live and learn. I told myself the next bike I buy I'm just going to get from a shop so I don't have to worry about this haha. Yes, I did only use 2 straps btw.

On the bright side my insurance took effect today and I got my plates switched over so I can finally forget about all this and just ride. Went for a quick one today after cleaning and oiling my chain - was awesome.

Oh, and obviously I'm not suing uhaul lmao.

I would never tow with only 2 straps. It's a recipe for what you experienced unfortunately when the back end of the bike gets airborne, starts to shift, and takes the rest of the bike with it.

This is the method I use. If fairings are in the way of the handlebars, or by preference for some people, the triple tree is arguably an option instead of the handlebars - it's what I had to do because of my batwing. Use proper straps and the trailer should have a proper chock.
