Generators

4 hours if I remember correctly. I had a portable 2kw generator at the time, I wasn’t out long enough to setup. In fact, I’ve never needed to run on a genie at home in 40 years.
A good while back we were out for about 8 hours. A friend five miles away was out for a week. It all depends on where the breakers tripped. He was closer to the big yard on Kipling.

I'm sure this totally isn't staged, seeing as how he's clearly parked in front of a house with grid power, and also driving a car that has an engine backup and doesn't rely on batteries.

It will work. Hard to get a higher cost per km though.

Won't always work - many EVSE's do not like the floating ground from a generator and will red-light error and refuse to charge. Which is exactly why a lot of these photos that you see floating around online are staged. Especially incredibly stupid ones like this charging a car with an ICE backup.

That particular evse is showing 240V and no wiring error. Not sure if photoshop. Uground for 240v is strange but plausible (especially if pic was not in North america).

I didn't say "will never" work. ;)

Anyhow, a quick GIS for this came up with the original source. Someone futzing around with their own car and own generator just trying to burn the remainder of a bunch of old fuel out of it to put fresh stuff in.

Unsurprisngly, and now having proven to be exactly the case, the second comment on the photo is "This will be on MAGA facebook pages within 5 minutes. "Look at the dumb liberals causing fake climate change with their gay EVs"

Yup. That's exactly what happened, and it's spread from there. Case in point, it even made it here, surely having been spread a million times in a million right wing places, and the original story completely lost.

According to YouTube New Zealand Hybrid owners are getting hammered.

A lot of the older ones are driving ICE because the battery is shot so they pay road tax on the gas rather than dump a ton of coin into a new battery. However NZ has introduced a mileage tax on EV's and the hybrids have to pay that, even if they're not using the battery mode.

Some owners have tried getting the cars re-certified as ICE but the job is a mess of technical and legal hurdles. A new battery could be cheaper. Harder still if the government doesn't want ICE on the roads.

As with all new technologies that have government involvements in one way or the other, it will take time for regulatory things to work themselves out. Even just a few years ago this wasn't an issue that would have ever been on anyones radar.
