Full leather for street riding stupid?

This is a dumb post.

So youre saying wearing leather in the summer is more dangerous than in a t shirt because of dehydration??? LOL

I dunno about you but how out of shape are you if youre getting dehydrated wearing leather......

Not as dumb as your post assuming that i suggest riding in a t-shirt in hot weather

You'll actually dehydrate faster in a T shirt because the sweat can evaporate more easily. And a black T shirt sitting in the sun is hotter than white leather. We each make our own choices every time we ride, and some let bad information sway their judgement. Dress for the fall, not the ride.

For me:

City (<60 km): Textile jacket & Kevlar Jeans, gloves, boots that cover the ankle

Hwy (>60 km): Leather jacket & heavyweight nylon pants with CE pads, gloves, ankle high boots.

2011 Yamaha FZ8
2009 Kawasaki ER-6n (SOLD)

i highly suggest full riding gear in all situations; if the heat is too much for you, then choose not to ride that day... it's that simple.

i saw jeans rip on the street, and physically disabling knee/leg road rash for weeks; this happened at <50kph speeds, if it was any faster... it could've been A LOT worse

leather today is perforated very well, if you're not comfortable with a onesie, then go for the two piece; also suggest full riding boots and not the ankle ones

at the end of the day, you have to choose a balance between protection and comfort; but it's better to walk away from a spill/accident knowing you wore the best possible gear available to you... rather than thinking, "well... i should've worn this"

there is an assumption of risk, operating a motorcycle... but giving yourself the best possible opportunity to walk away scratch free... or alive... who wouldn't want that?

Does it have chest armor?

I have broken my entire ribcage twice, and is what I want to try and avoid in the future.

I would hope a Dianese 1 piece leather suit costing 1500 bucks is perforated and has armor!

Does not have chest or back protectors built in but you can always buy one of these:

I will have to say that my Laguna Seca worked quite well in 30+ weather and was not overly hot.

Good boots, more street oriented.

More like these.....

I got a pair for around 99 bucks at gp on sale. Takes a bit to get over the Gene Simmons/Marylin Manson feel, but you get used to it.
Remember, in the woods everything, I mean everything can and most likely will be covered in mud.

With respect to full leathers, even the best riders under the best conditions......

Your ride, your call.

Personally, I'd rather sweat than bleed.

As others have said I would rather sweat than bleed. It is your ride. On my ride I want to be protected and comfortable. I also want to wear gear that somewhat goes with what I am riding. I ride a "standard" UJM bike so I would look silly in a one piece race replica suit. Conversely those of you on a sportbike would look goofy wearing a beenie helmet and chaps.

My gear is soon going to include Velocity kevlar riding jeans and I am also getting a pair of Olympia Airglide pants which will give me better air flow on the really hot days.

So, right now it looks like I am just wearing my vented, textile jacket along with boots, gloves, and my helmet. However, I have augmented this with this stuff:

It all breathes/vents so I do not feel any hotter than I do without them. However, I feel much safer wearing this stuff. The elbow guards essentially end where the padding on my gauntlet gloves starts. The back and elbow armour fits well under my jacket and just adds to the armour already in the jacket.

One of the next pieces of protection due for an upgrade is my boots. At present I am wearing a pair of Altimate boots which have some protection in the toe box and along the medial and lateral sides of the ankle.

However, there is nothing in the design of the boot to do anything about a spiral break of the ankle. Something like these Dainese boots will be my next upgrade:

With the various modular types of armour from Dainese, Icon, Alpinestars etc you can have a lot of protection but not look like a repli-racer (nothing wrong with that look either though).

I cringe every time I see some idiots riding with t shirts and shorts. Look up some pictures of abrasions from very low speed crashes. It's tissue grafts and surgery for years, plus the infection risk. Nothing is better than kangaroo leather, but kevlar mesh and synthetics can be very light. No one in Europe gets on a bike without full leathers, but paradoxically this doesn't apply to people riding scooters at insane speeds.
I fell once in jeans, they last about 2 metres.

I was at the Waterdown Ribfest on Sunday. Saw some bikers walk by and I was checking out their helmets. All were sporting nice Suomy full face lids (all with the mohawk attachments which is another story). No jackets, all in t-shirts and shorts. One of the guys deserves some credit for sporting one of the Icon armoured vests over his tshirt. Would go a long way to help out his back if he slid on it. Nothing to help his poor arms and legs though. It is not just the sportbike guys in tshirts and shorts though. I see guys on cruisers all the time wearing tshirts and shorts. Again, their ride and their choice. I find it interesting that the bits of armour I have added have done nothing to limit my comfort. I am no hotter in this extra gear and it adds a minute or so max to my time to suit up. Yet, I am way better protected than if I did not utilize this extra armour. I look no different to anybody who would see me ride by. Essentially much better protection with no negatives...

You sure they didn't lock up gear on their bikes? I know people that do that so they are comfortable once they get to destinations such as Park fests, etc. However, if you didn't know that, you'd assume they rode in shorts, etc.

Aside from that, anyone questioning what gear to buy should simply Google bike accident photos and make their decision from there. What sort of chances would you prefer of retaining skin and bone should something happen? Then buy gear appropriate to suit your preferences.

You make a good point. Maybe they left their jackets with the bikes. In general though I tend to see more people sans gear in my rides than people with gear. As I said though... That is their ride.

I have been collecting crash reports and photos of crashed gear and resultant injuries for 3 years now, specifically on the subject of mesh and textile gear. I note the reasons for the crash, brands, pics of crashed gear, injuries and references where possible. You can read my docs and make up your own mind if mesh is crap. We live in an imperfect world and each crash is a little difference. Your results may vary.

Does Motorcycle Mesh Gear Melt in a Crash?

If anyone has crashed in mesh or textile and would like to contribute their experiences, both good and bad, and photos please let me know.

Leather is best but I would faint in 30C heat and crash anyway. Beside getting mushed by a car, there are also environmental and road factors. I use mesh above 25C. I will trade off some abrasion resistance for a lower core body temperature. If you can ride comfortably in leather in 30C heat and humidity then do it. I tried and found it unsafe.

Wow... those Sidi boots sure saved his feet.
Makes me want to consider these ones for my next boots. SIDI Adventure Goretex Boots:

I was melting today with my textile jacket. Makes me want to consider a mesh jacket. I would still wear my Icon armour underneath it to beef up the protection:

Looked at the Joe Rocket Phoenix. However, the Olympia Renegade has Cordura which I think might have better abrasion resistance versus the Joe Rocket:

its not stupid at all its smart but if u want gear that u wont die in u should cheek out my detales

So, if I don't check out your "details" I will buy gear I will die in? I have no problem with you promoting your wares and services but please don't be so morbid. ;)

These items should help me prolong my mortality. Glad I checked the place out...

I have ridden in full one piece leather suit. I have to say the only time I typically where them is on long rides, not so much when just riding around town. Would also look funny going into a restaurant, movies, etc. That's where my leather jacket and kevlar jeans comes in handy. I got full leathers because in the past I took my bike on the track, it would seem such a waste to not use the one piece leathers that I have.

It's a personal choice and I'm not here to judge.....but others are.

+1

People say go on youtube and do a search for "motorcycle crashes"

You can go on you tube and do a search for, car crashes.. Do you wear a helmet and have a roll cage in your car?

Go on you tube and do a search for people getting hit by cars while crossing street... Are you going to cross the street?

Ride your bike for enjoyment, ride safe ride smart... Thats your best protection.. If you want to wear gear wear, if you dont than dont.. Dont do things out of fear .. You are supposed to be enjoying your ride.
