F1 Thread!!!

revisionist history. F1 has always been full races in the past where the guy that leads at the end of the first lap pulls away.

This F1 season is a mess. Movable wing, driver can only use at certain sector of the wheel, tires which are designed purposely to loose 0.2 per lap ... all of this supposed to produce better racing which didn't really show. Vettel running away with it like he did at the end of the last season.

The best shot was two guys on the straight way, everybody expects the rear wing to do its magic reducing drag etc. and pulling the car ahead, yet nothing happens .... it felt awkward.

Give the guys cars from late 80s and you will get some racing ....

It's the Australian GP - traditionally not much happens as it's not a great track for passing. Also, being the first race of the season, there's usually one or two teams that are further ahead in development than everyone else. More teams catch up as it goes on. I'm actually glad the rear wing doesn't do too much, it makes all the restrictions on its use seem excessive. It appears to be totally useless unless KERS is activated at the same time.

And I know the shot you're talking about - Button trying to pass Massa. I think that had to do more with Ferrari having an advantage on the straights, and it was amusing to watch.

Formula Yawn.

Man, after snoremaster procession at Oz, this is going to be a long painful season to endure.

.

Relax man, even the most exciting seasons had their fair share of processional races.

After watching Australian GP, I can only imagine how little passing Bahrain would have offered.

The new rules seem to be working out. The top 3 qualifiers didn't use KERS/it broke. The DFS made zero difference on passing down the straight. Sauber was able to run the whole race on one stop and finish 6th.

The Saubers were DQ'd.

When those tires wear away they sure lose grip quickly. Could make for some interesting races this season for those that think they have the race in their pocket,, WHAMMO! they end up doing a Petrov.

Replay on SPEED channel at 2:30 this aft if that helps.

It's kinda dumb, though. Bridgestone really did bring the tires a long way - perhaps not so much in terms of grip, but the teams could push the tires ridiculously long if they wanted to, and get away with it. Now we're winding it back a decade or so ... I could not believe the amount of marbles off-line in the turns, it was terrible! Probably WHY Petrov went off in the first place, though coming back on the track at full speed was all him. :p

Nothing wrong with going out in style.

The subsequent steering column failure was spectacular and outright scary all in one go.

Made me think of the Senna crash when I saw that... As far as the marbles, yeah, ridiculous.. What a mess..

Didn't one of the Renaults pass Hamilton on the marbles going into 1? Didn't seem to be an impediment there.

But yeah I thought of Senna too with that steering column, luckily Petrov didn't have a wall staring him in the face.

I just remember CART going out in yellows and sweeping the marbles off because they were (or at least they thought they were..) an issue. I think they could make tires that do not degrade so quickly or with so much lost rubber but I think they believe the tire changes are more exciting.

James "Bubba" Stewart ain't got nothing on Vitaly "Liftoff" Petrov
