Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Anyone spray wood fence? Can I use normal paint? Special paint? Stain / paint?

Do I need to strip the old paint?

4x4 posts will be replaced by 6x6 as the current ones are leaning and some rotting. But the actual fence is in fairly good condition outside of some boards so thinking to just replace the posts, paint the fence sections and then replace as time and funds permit.

What is existing finish? Stain over paint won't go well. If any paint is loose, it needs to come off prior to adding new paint. Test a small section first for compatibility, some paints don't play nicely together and you may get no adhesion or bubbling depending on combination. Once I found paint I was happy with, I'd probably buzz the fence quickly with sandpaper to give the new paint a better chance to stick. If it is typical board on board, You wont easily be able to sand the back of the boards on the far side so I'd just leave them and take my chances. I hate paint. It sets up a perpetual maintenance cycle. When you replace the panels, I'd use brown pressure treated and no coating.

I wouldn’t paint it either…but Kevin did….

So the other option is pressure wash and sand, and leave it be…which I would actually prefer.

PSA - home depot replaced their crappy Pivoting 1 1/2 P-traps with something better.

The new one can pivot on a bit of an angle, plus the pivot has a washer for a better seal.

Weird thing happened today. My dog brought out a toy, a fluffy big ball thing. Within about 5 minutes there was a small swarm of tiny bees on it so we got the dogs inside and dealt with the problem. This made us look about the house a bit and there’s quite a bit of activity from both bees and wasps around the garden and the house right now. Off to crappy tire for some paper wasp nests to hang around the place. These buggers can go build nests elsewhere.

We haven't added mulch to the gardens since we moved in. I was going to use trailer but wife wanted bags. I can fit two cu yds in her car so I got a couple loads. Turns out I need five cu yds of mulch. Back to the store tomorrow. Next time acquiring mulch a more cost effective way.

$60 for delivery in Mississauga up to 6yrd3…

I’m quite happy with just buying it instead of driving back and forth.

Well did the first cut of the lawn today, fun times.

Did an afternoon ride as well when the sun came out. Not bad day. (y)
Apparently I shouldn’t cut my lawn for 4-6weeks following new seeding…it’ll be fun as some sections ar already above the ankle.

I got 20 yards last year was around 400 delivered. Got tired of getting a yard at a time.

Got the pool fully open today and the stupid robot is dead again communication error for 2g these things should last more than a season. Ordered a new one and a new clear solar blanket. I will play with the robot when I have time and see if it is just the slip ring in the cord or water inside.

Just got back from the North (1 hr flight bests the 7 hr drive!). Amazing how much the place has greened up since I left Markham 10 days ago.

Pumping out the pool’s winter tarp tonight, Opening is tomorrow!

Is there a simple water heater for the above ground pool that anyone can recommend? I’ve got one of those 14ft round pools that I’d like to use but the water just never heats up as there’s only 3-4hrs of direct sunlight in my yard in a day…so wife wants me to toss the pool as it’s too cold to use for her or the kids.

Easy make sure you have a clear solar blanket the blue ones don't work nearly as well.

Without a doubt that will heat it to any temperature he wants. Hell, between the sun and that running during the day on the weekends, my pool has gone from 47 to 67 in a week. Getting 240V to the heat pump will add some to the cost.

Don't you have lots of wood at the cottage mp? I can't remember mississaugas policy on wood burning. Lots of above ground pools are heated with an old radiator or loop of copper and a fire.

EDIT:

I can't remember what pool mp has now. That heater has a specific warning for soft sided pools due to low flow rate from the pumps. Make sure the pump has 20 gpm.

I had a cheapie natural gas tankless heaters for my hot tub. Not this one, but similar:

Install it near your gas meter on the outside of the house, no vent required. A black poly pipe to and from the pool will keep it as hot as your wife likes it.

Cheap and easy.
