Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

This would be a great way to market your business, come in and save the day.
I wouldnt go near this one. Job is mostly done by someone else, lots of appliances purchased and delivered by somebody else. Lots of places where previous player could have left landmines. Add in a client that is already distressed, drained of funds and willing to contact media if things don't go as expected as a capper.

If mp and dad have a higher risk tolerance, it may be worth the chat and go T&E. The first day or two would just be inspecting what has been done before doing work that further buries issues.

Six decades for the tree to grow and six hours to turn it into firewood. We had our diseased Norway Maple taken down. I'll miss the shade come summer.
That sounds expensive with todays rates.

FWIW
I really wanted to save the tree but not enough to risk it dropping a ton of wood on the roof. I spent a couple of thousand on testing including a tree ultra sound. The city removal permits and the felling was about $4 K. It would be a thousand more if they had to take away the wood. I had them leave the stump for a later decision. Right now it's a step up to the deck

I have to plant a replacement tree by the end of June 2024. That'll be another three to four thousand. Roughly a 10K experience. Plus buying an patio umbrella.

Hold on, you have to plant a replacement, is this something the city is enforcing you to do?
Why does it cost so much to plant one? Is it fully grown or something?
Couldn't you just take the seeds from the tree you cut and plant them?

My huge maple drops so many seeds every year I have to rip up these baby maples.
Maybe I should start a maple tree farm in my backyard.:unsure:

Ya...3-4k sounds like a lot to plant a new tree. Is it a fully grown tree @nobbie48?

Go a few kms north and just yank one out of the woods.

Yes I have to plant a new tree. To get the removal permit I had to provide a drawing showing where the new tree was going to be planted. I think there is a minimum size but realistically a 4" trunk is about as big as can be moved, barring being PM.

The root ball sizes are the problem with the ball being about a foot in diameter for each inch of trunk diameter. One inch you pick it up in one hand. Two inches, bring a buddy, three inches is hernias for four guys, four inches requires many husky people yelling at each other in foreign languages.

My present decision is that even a four inch tree will not grow fast enough for me to really enjoy it in my lifetime. Should I just go with the minimum size?

Norway maples went from being the darlings of trees 60 years ago to being labeled invasive now. This years was a bumper crop of keys.

The Norways are too prolific and are not on the approved list. They have a limited life expectancy as they tend to strangle their own root system

One also has to consider the fruit. My wife likes Ginko trees but never get a female. The fruit is cherry sized but smells like people poo when crushed. Some trees have toxic pods. When magnolia blossoms rot they smell like pig poo.

Oak wilt is the new forestry threat. Get ready to vaccinate your oak trees.

The city wants a picture of the tree when planted and again in two years. If it dies you replant and start the timer again.

You actually need a permit to even cut back a tree.

Plant a plastic tree. Tell the council it’s made from recycled bottles and recovered ocean plastic.

Sigh. Justin wants us to stop using plastic so we have wood spoons at take outs. We've lost the elms, spruces and ashes with oak now of concern. On top of that wants us to cut down trees.

My guess is the intention is to use wood production by-products or some sort of recycled material to make the non-plastic utensils that is biodegradable vs chopping down trees in the old growth forests to only make spoons for Wendy's... What is happening in practice, IDK???

In Oakville if you take down a heritage tree you need to plant three . Yes three if your property has space . Cedars are approved. You can cut back with no permit if you’re using an arborist . You can take down any tree with no permit if it’s under 7” , measured one foot off the ground . There are a lot of 6 7/8” trees come out and stumped level with the ground . Measure that f’ers !

About 2 years ago we cut down our 100+ ft tree at the cottage. It was a wonderful old tree (60+ years at least) that gave us beautiful shade and just completed the yard.

My mother to this day laments the loss of that tree, but it was rotted in b/w the two main trunks and was either going to come down on our cottage, or at the neighbour's house.

The decision was made to cut the tree for $2800 cash along with the stump. Dad kept the tree because he made useless slabs that no one wants to buy.

I'm still not sure what to replace it with, because the cottage does seem very empty without it. But I'll just go to the surrounding woods and pull a tree from there to just place in this spot. My parents will never see the shade from it, but if the cottage stays in the family maybe my children will.

Here we go...native species for the region:

I know @shanekingsley has made a similar post before about native specimens.

I want one more tree on my lawn. Many of the choices I really liked aesthetically as trees I eliminated because of the chaos they cause. Black walnut for instance. Dealing with thousands of cannonballs falling in you and beating up the lawnmower doesn't make sense to me.

Given the location, a claw truck can't reach so it is hand plant only. In the interest of time, as big as possible makes sense. Something like 4" tunk with 4' root all is probably max. Trailer across the lawn and roll it off the trailer into the giant hole. Kentucky coffee tree was the leader when I put the project on hold for covid. It is native to ontario but normally further south. Cherry was a contender but it is awesome only a few weeks a year and annoying for months.

I have no clue what type of tree it was…but it was big, leafy, and non fruit. I miss that tree.

Tested the generator to run some lights in the house while it's warm outside:

It's pretty quiet just inside the window, for such a loud generator, aimed at the wall, and sitting on the concrete. I might try putting a rubber pad under it or against the wall.
