Damn, speaking from first hand experience it's so easy to get disorganized, I was shocked at how much crap we had and tossed out during the move. Even now, we're bringing in boxes and asking "why did we keep this?" I have new garage to organize and I'm hopeful to keep it organized.
Property is to big to be looking around for stuff. Forgot a tool in the barn? that's a 1km walk there and back to get it... Yikes
I have separate tools for upstairs and basement in house, a garage set and a travelling set. You'll end up similar. Store supplies in bins (eg electrical, low voltage electrical, plumbing, etc). Move the bin to the job and then back to the barn when the job is done.

My organization is a disaster, it is why I have multiples of many small tools. Middle of a project, I can't find X....I know where they are located at the store vs spending hours looking. Latest was a large caulking gun, now I have two but I only know where the new one is...
One accomplishment was to put all the screws in one bin, nails in another. At least this stopped me from buying small packs of screws I already have....

You read my mind.
Already have a work bench in the utility room (Basement) in the garage and in the barn.
The first project is the utility room tools as not that interested in organizing tools in the cold, that will just lead to me doing half-assed..
Plus I've spent a small fortune already and still have 1000's to go so I'm ok taking a break.
I split my tools up into "where am I likely to get used" . Stuff that comes out once or twice a yr. Framing nailers , recipro saws ect all in the shed. One bag of screwdrivers , pliers , electrical meter ect in house. Big stupid special tools like impact guns and impact sockets and giant pullers for gears and props ect in garage.
when we had the farm , dad had a golf cart with a home made trailer that had a rack with wrenches, hammers, socket sets , all the stuff you might need anywhere you might want it, welder and gen set could be loaded in , handy until it snowed
I have 4 live circuit testers since they always get waylaid. Similarly I think I have about 6 measuring tapes since they all seem to have legs and are pretty mobile.
Not even counted the screwdriver doubles we have. No matter how hard I try some things just never seem to stay in their place.

I try to have different tools in different spots. Garage sockets are craftsman, portable are mastercrap for instance. When they inevitably migrate, it makes it easier to figure out where they belong.
Extra tools go into an old tool box. Sometimes they go to others who need them, sometimes they get modified to get a job done. I don't want lots of doubles in one spot. That causes more issues than it solves imo.
When I did a lot of woodworking I’d have 4 nail guns with different lengths , 3 cordless drill with different bits and have 6 routers at one point setup for different tasks . Now it’s a loaner library , but do you think anybody can bring stuff back? Oy vey . Sure I’ll have a flooring nailer , compressor and miter saw so you can do your floor at the cottage , do you think it would be hard to bring it back when done ?

Mp is good about bringing things back. One of my neighbours, not so much. It comes back eventually and if they lose things they replace them but it takes a while. A friend borrowed something when they lived nearby and forgot to return it before moving to bc. That was the only thing I had to fly to recover.

Brother runs a really large tool and machine company so on occasion I’ve borrowed something I’ll need once in a lifetime, like a big rotary hammer for a 4” hole . But that’s it . I do like owning things . Money is a hard no , and I bought my own truck again, so I’m with you there .
I'm very careful to who I lend things nowadays. Dad's a hard no to anyone that tries to borrow anything of his simply because he got burned too often over the course of his career.
When I do borrow something, I treat it better than my own as my conscience eats up at me.
Neighbour lent me his c-clamp to help with the brakes. I snapped it and he refused re-payment. I finally gave him $25 and he accepted $20 for it and a dozen eggs.
I am pretty selective regarding who I lend anything to and who I borrow anything from. I also like owning my own tools. I have a buddy that is hounding me to borrow ALL his tools, he needs a place to store them lol. So far it is a pass due to my space, my current organizational problems and the fact I have almost everything he does (if I can find it).

Last medium size purchase for myself was a cordless Bosch rotary hammer. It was on sale and the cost was lower than the two batteries it came with. I am surprised on how much use it is getting.
I am very selective on who I lend things to, I usually consider it "giving it away" as the expectation is never to see it again. But, I've been lucky with who I choose to associate with and therefore lend my tools to.
