Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

A bit of a diversion but someone was fighting a fraudulent account payment or the like. Their account got hacked by someone guessing the answer to the question. Q: Who is your favourite Beatle?

In case of an entry error you were given four tries.
Obviously the answer is Pete Best.

I hope you didn't measure the opening for new windows the same way.
Our last house we wanted a new patio window...window store said 'you measure it and we will make them' I laughed and laughed...'No...if I mess up the measurement it's on me, if you mess it up...it's on you!' ... they sent a guy to measure it the next day.

I did cross sections and will match with the manufacturer's profiles.

One company I worked for got the contract for a high rise and sent a designer to measure the windows. The first floor usually has a higher ceiling and the second to the top are typical. So he measured the second floor. It turned out that the second wasn't typical. The windows were shorter. All the windows except of the first and second floors were scrap.

L" minus 1/4" x H" minus 1/4".
I only ever got 1 wrong.....(cost me...lol)

And the diagonals were?????

I think our house had sashless sliders installed as the bricks went up and some of the windows were racked. I never checked and the replacement basement window with -1/2" clearance barely went in.

Never measured diag on a replacement window.
Measure width at the bottom, and confirm centre and top.
Deduct 1/4".
Measure top to bottom in at least 2 spots.
Deduct 1/4".
If replacing frames, measure accordingly.
Order 'em up.

Patched, primed and painted bathroom walls. Removed old toilet and sink, was dreading clearing up old wax ring...but there wasn’t one? Added railing to support countertop, found my studs are not 16” on centre...also realized stud detector was about as much good as magic 8 ball, realized 12v tools have very finite capabilities and whizzed through batteries using spade bits. Installed laminate flooring, thought I’d ignore the instructions....installed it the wrong way round after I wondered why it wasn’t “click locking” properly and why installing it was so hard. Tried to trim laminate with rotozip...worked ok, made a bit of a mess, seemed to be melting laminate rather than cutting it. Wasted a few boards, started again, all is good now.

Got out my ancient mini compressor and nail guns to install baseboards and quarter round. Quickly found out compressor is just a disguised tire inflator...need to find nail setter to get nails below surface. Swore rather a lot at this one.

Got frustrated...went to Home Depot. Spent equivalent of small mortgage on new power tools. Have nice set of 18v Rigid drill, cordless nailer, jigsaw and impact driver.

Learned a lot. Swore a lot. Drank a lot. Ready for two other rooms after this. I still have sink and toilet to install.
Could have borrowed my compressor. Also, was it low pressure, or incorrect depth adjustment on the nailer?

all three but with the emphasis on operator error and thanks for the offer!

I got a Rigid cordless nailer and it’s amazing. Put up a wood panel wall yesterday and it was plain sailing.......apart from the bit where my mitre saw made a strange noise and I realized the blade was coming loose.

I was thinking about getting a new compressor but garage space is at a premium and this cordless thing works great. Also got a new drill and driver and they are awesome but I have to get used to the power and torque over my old 12v tools. Drilled two holes in a countertop yesterday and nearly started a fire.

Holy crap. Went to Home Depot this morning and the price of a 2x4 went from 3.xx to $7.30/each.....wtf.
Glad I finished most of the major work already.

My sister's neighbour just tore the decking off his deck and replaced it all with cedar. I got a trailer-load of 2 X 6's, most of which are in decent enough shape. A few bad spots, but nothing to worry about. I need to pull some nails and screws, but I may be able to retire on the proceeds with today's prices.

I wonder if that fits Doug's COVID price scamming criteria, and you can report it, or is that just normal price scamming...

I guess this mean other retailers will follow suit, and probablly bump up other prices as well. I think drywall is up a dollar.

At work we order tons of wood at a time. Boss couldn’t believe the price so we checked.....looked like the Bitcoin rise back a few years ago. Skyrocketing. Apparently there’s a pretty big lack of supply at the moment in lumber. But I’m not 100% sure.

I wonder about the reality of these things. I've heard recently the shortage of pop/beverage products. Everything was fully stocked at the grocery. Maybe they are being proactive with the pricing (of what will happen), or someone is manipulating it. ?‍♂️

Head of a huge company just announced that paper towel supply is constrained and they can't make it fast enough. Is he being realistic or trying to create a panic and hoarding to prop up his bonus?

I'm not surprised at lumber prices. A lot of people spent a lot of time and money on home improvement projects this year. I doubt production can scale much to compensate. For a while, people were using supplies that they had stockpiled to avoid the marginally higher prices with the hopes they would come back down, but at this point everybody is running out. That leaves you to pay through the nose or delay your project.

Anyone have a recommendation / lead on some lockers for the garage? Looking to store some PPE and some motorcycle gear in an older style aluminum / metal lockers. Thanks!
